Microsoft partners with Time Warner for new live TV deal

Microsoft announces "landmark" deal with Time Warner to bring US subscribers 300 live TV channels this summer.

Today, Microsoft announced a "landmark" deal with Time Warner Cable that will bring 300 of the cable company's live TV channels to the Xbox 360 later this summer.

No Caption Provided

Users must have an Xbox Live Gold membership and a subscription to Time Warner Cable to watch live television through their Xbox 360s. Live streaming is available only to those in the United States.

Supported channels include AMC, BBC World News, Bravo, Cartoon Network, CNN, Comedy Central, Food Network, HGTV, and more. Users will be able to control the programming using their voice through the Kinect, Microsoft said.

This deal is similar to the existing offer for Verizon FiOS subscribers, where users can watch many of the same channels live through their Xbox 360s with Kinect compatibility.

Live TV streaming through Microsoft's next-generation Xbox One won't require a separate application, as it currently does on the Xbox 360. The console will plug directly into a user's cable box and feed live TV through the system with an HDMI cable.

I've had Time Warner Cable my whole life & i've never had an issue with it. U ppl must live in the sticks then. You guys live in mountain areas or something cuz cable has always worked for me. As far as this deal goes, what's the point?? If I want to watch cable then I'll switch my input & watch cable. There's no point in having it on your Xbox when your already paying for it in the first place. The only way I c this to be a good thing is if you don't have digital cable & then you get more channels out of it thru Xbox. But other than that I say its pointless.

I am sure you still need a cable box to feed the scrambled channels to the Xbox. What is the point? How MS got all crazed about tv through the Xbox is beyond me. Um... The Xbox is supposed to be about games. MS has lost sight of that which is why they will get their asses handed to them this coming gen

@Henninger I'm sure like with Verizon and Comcast you will have to use some sort of Authentication to show you are a TWC subscriber and you're going to get only what you pay for. On top of that, and I'm just speculating, but you may get even less unless you actually connect your cable box to the console itself. I had the FiOS app on the 360 and it was completely useless.

The only ''benefit'' of these apps or using HDMI pass through appear to be not having to use the remote to switch from gameplay to television. This would be impressive if I were able to get all channels streamed HD without the use of a cable box, but there's no way Verizon, TWC, or Comcast is going to let that happen.

@TacticaI @Henninger actually twc already has an app that you use on pc and tablets and smartphones and you get mostly all the channels on the cable box and all the on demand to so I'm assuming that this app will be the same

@overblood @TacticaI @Henninger Then TWC users would have a leg up over everyone else I guess lol. I'll wait too see it in action, but if the cable box is necessary, they aren't saving us any money or much trouble, which is what I don't get. If it's going to be an all-in-one device it would be nice if it were the only device needed in the living room beside the TV. That would justify the price tag to me.

@djpetitte @Gammit10 The point was to call out whiners like you who make poorly-typed, inane posts that simply parrot what the other children regurgitated. At least the person two lines down had some content to it.

I think you are in the wrong forums if you are looking for comments that aren't poorly typed. Who gives a crap this isn't English class, its a video game forum. To post a comment to call out whiners like me seems supremely pointless and a waste of your time, because your little pointless comment isn't going to change a god damn thing alright! the only thing youre comments are good for are making false accusations.

probably the dumbest partnership I have even heard of. time warner sort of blows and why would I pay all these nickel and dime fees. I already pay near 100 dollars a month for cable and internet and now im supposed to pay for live. no thanks everything the xbox can do I can do on my pc with no xbox live fees.

Really stupid: for the purpose of WATCHING tv shows, I use T/W; for the purpose of gaming, I use XBox. Now you're saying for the purpose of watching TV on a gaming console, I must have XBoxLive ($60+) and my T/W sub ($60+) to enjoy the WONDERS of watching the same crap throught the XBox -1? On what planet does Microsoft reside on? Console = gaming...give us stuff related to GAMING!!! Really, what's so hard (other than your thick skulls are) about it?

PS4 looking better and better, people!

I totally agree with everything you said and yes the PS4 is definitely the gamers console of choice at this point. Why would I need essentially another big ugly cable box in my living room.

Microsoft you shouldn't have changed your policies at all. I accept that Region lock and Mandatory internet connection needs to go away. Used games you should have kept the original policy and reduced the new game price by around 10-15$. As you will get lot more profit by charging used games. Now new games can be bought for 60$, You could have shown the gamers real benefit by reducing the price of the new game to sell around 45-50$. Also some real benefit of Kinect by showing some very interesting games. just to prove the worth of Kinect. Your PR should have made it clear that Kinect could be shut off completely, if you don't wish too. Policy reversal of used games was unnecessary. But your whole idea of integrating TV with gaming consoles itself is wrong. Instead of investing on things like T.V. shows, you could have invested on better hardware. Don't waste your money. This is a gaming console first and foremost.

Maybe I'm a luddite, maybe I'm missing something really obvious here...

But it seems that, for the purposes of watching TV through your Xbone, Microsoft want you to buy the console itself, a Gold subscription, requires you to already have a TV, cable box and subscription... Basically, it's "Buy our $500 fancy box and take out another subscription to do the thing you can already do anyway!".

Time Warner sucks. I can't believe MS is doing that.LOL.Their business practices suck.I also remember an article saying that cable companies are trying to stop customers from leaving them for PC T.V. streaming. That to me right there shows how much MS cares for its consumers.Time Warner doesn't care about consumers and MS is the same.I wonder what kind of rates they're dreaming up right now......

@epicgameresearc But but you can now talk to your console to change the channel lol...

Its really point-less. Since this only acts as a pass-through, it still requires you have a dedicated cable box and its just as simple to change TV input from HDMI 1 to HDMI 2 to say swap between sports and gaming (it doesn't free up any room in your living room).

Make the Xbox One an actual cable box than I will be interested. I don't like how Microsoft is marketing it as an all in one but you need a cable box for the Xbox One to do what a cable box does. That is just absurd.
