NPD: July sees PS3 overtake 360 in Canada

Game-industry sales surge 62 percent north of the border, thanks to post-price-cut surge of Sony console; Wii, DS still dominate.

When game-industry research firm NPD releases US retail figures for the month of July, some analysts expect that they will show the PlayStation 3 outsold the Xbox 360 for the first time, thanks to a pre-E3 Media & Business Summit price drop. Regardless of how the numbers shake out in the US, NPD confirmed to GameSpot today that the PS3 outsold Microsoft's console north of the border.

The PS3 managed to move more than 15,000 systems in Canada for the month, overtaking the 13,000 Xbox 360s sold. However, both consoles were bested handily by Nintendo's Wii, which racked up more than 36,000 sales for the month. On the portable side of the market, the DS topped all non-PC platforms in July with almost 46,000 units sold, well ahead of the PlayStation Portable's 6,000 tally.

The industry as a whole was up more than 62 percent for the month, to C$84 million ($78.9 million) from the C$51.8 million ($48.7 million) it managed in July 2006. Portable hardware sales were up slightly, but console hardware revenues for the month more than tripled, leading to an overall 11 percent increase for systems, up to C$35.8 million ($33.6 million).

On the software side of the business, growth was significant, but not as explosive. Overall software sales were up more than 30 percent, to C$38.2 million ($35.9 million), led by a 43 percent increase in console software. Portable games only managed 8 percent growth for the month. Rounding out the industry picture, accessory sales were up more than 78 percent, to C$10 million ($9.4 million).

The best-selling games chart yielded a few surprises. Activision's Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s was the best-selling new release, but only managed to make it to the fourth spot. Nintendo's Wii Play (which comes packed with a spare Wii Remote) was the best-seller of the month, and the original PlayStation 2 Guitar Hero II topped its Encore by coming in second. A value pack of randomly assorted Xbox games came in third. The rest of the best-selling software titles are listed below.

Canada's top 10 best-selling games for July 2007:

1. Wii Play with Wii Remote--Wii
2. Guitar Hero II with guitar--PS2
3. Value Pack (included games vary)--Xbox
4. Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s--PS2
5. Pokémon Diamond--DS
6. Mario Party 8--Wii
7. Guitar Hero II with guitar--Xbox 360
8. Transformers: The Game--PS2
9. Pokémon Pearl--DS
10. New Super Mario Bros.--DS

Most important thing here is that CANADA LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVES Guitar Hero!!!!! Im canadian....and during winter...theres nothing like getting drunk and playing guitar hero with 4-5 hot chicks that want to play as much as the guys do!!! THANK YOU GUITAR HERO FOR HELPING ME HOOK UP!!! HALLELUIJA!!!! P-S: i own an xbox 360 that i bought for 40$ because it didnt work, if anyone here needs advice on how to fix it, I have fixed it (3 red lights) and it's now in full working order, BRIEFLY: you need to put a shim underneath the X brackets holding the heat sink on top of both the GPU and CPU, and you have to remove the FOIL underneath the ALUMINUM HEATSINK and put a bit of HEATSINK PASTE and VOILA!!!! but remember you'll be voiding your garantee if you open your console, the one i bought was already opened, so i had no choice to do what i did, hopefully for your sake you'll just send it to microsoft so they can send you a refurbished one. PPS-sony has a powerful machine, microsoft has an all around awesome machine, wii has a fun machine depending on what you want, how much money you're willing to spend and the games and gameplay you want, i guess the choice really is yours!

Canada is huge, but it has so much non populated areas. the same for Brazil, still we have a population of 189 milion... man, we´re like ants! too bad most of this people live in extreme poverty. i guess i´m luck that among my worries are buying a good next gen console with good games, and not thinking about whether i´ll have or not something to feed my children the next day. still, i wish that sony would officially sell their console on brazilian territory. thanks for agreeing with me VegeteMaelstrom, i also noticed that this xbox360 issue was brought up by user InFurnace a few messages below.

@ Hawaiiance, Canada has a population of roughly 33 million, and the world population is roughly 6.6 billion. Which means canada has about 0.5% of the world population...

I totally agree with you bruno_ps2. I think the 360 has some awesome games out for it (not to mention Mass Effect coming) but I still won't buy one even though I really want to. The reason is the shoddy, poorly designed and manufactured hardware. If I had any faith in the current 360 system to last me 4 or 5 years then I'd be playing Bioshock on it right now but I'm afraid of getting the red rings of death and playing a constant game of swap the coffin with Microsoft's tech boys. Hopefully the 65nm chip solves this problem and hopefully the console boxes are clearly labelled as containing the 65nm chips so I won't get stuck with a lemon 90nm one. Otherwise I'm stuck waiting for the PS3 to come down even more in price (as well as more decent games to arrive on it).

--Hawaiianc -- Actually on a per person basis Canada has one of the largest adoption rates for games and tech in the world. We love our consoles, HDTV's, high speed and On Demand services and we buy a lot more of them then any other country percentage wise.

i´ve always been a playstation fan, but i was really looking foward to buy a 360, because it has such great games, and is cheaper. but what no one of you guys seem to be talking about is the fact that microsoft released a console that overheats and simply dies. all of the manufactured 360s have this problem, there is no exception. anyone who bought it may just lose their console because of this. this is a gigantic lack of respect towards the consumer. thus, buying a 360 is like playing a russian roullete - you depend on luck. you may die, but also you may not. in the us this is simply solved because there is a 3 years warranty (relatively simple, because when they release the console with the 65nn chips, i´m not sure if these will be the ones replacing the overheated xboxes which have 90nn overheating chips, and after the first 3 years, you run the risk of simply losing your console) . here in Brazil, if i want to buy the console for less than $1,500,00 (that´s right, it is outrageous), i need to buy it from alternative market, and the warranty they offer is only of 3 months. so it is clear that buying a 360 is not an option for me, because Micro$oft jumped the gun to launch their console before everyone else, and delivered a faulty one. i´m just going to wait until they launch a 360 that does not overheat, or until the ps3 has some games that are worth their salt (MGS anyone?). now i have a just bought LCD tv waiting to be played, but i only have a ps2 to plug it in, and it looks awful on HD display. that´s it, microsoft, as usual, delivering bug filled products. just hope that they don´t buy all of the publishers into not releasing games on sony´s console.

I'm not surprised that WIi Play topped the char, as I work for Gamestop, and anytime a customer needs a second controller for their Wii, they almost 99% of the time buy the Wii Play bundle.

PS3 only got over 360 by 2000, that's not very much really. I'd have been disappointed by the amount of games available had I gone the PS3 route.

Come on, the ps3 finally had some people interested in it because they have been waiting that long for a price drop. I own a wii and a 360 and trust me,I'm only playing with my 360. The wii is a lame console with small games that never last long. They sale games as big as the ds for 30$ over. That's robbering!!! And I have never see something less intuitive than that. Even my childs don't understand how to play games. They prefer the gamecube.

@fr33_loader I bought one of those 500 games in one units for $15 dollars at the mall. And I'm having a hell of a time. I don't need internet, I don't need a killer gpu, a optical drive. I don't need to spend extra money to have good games now. But then you can always wait for Halo to come out. Obviously I'm being sarcastic but you make no sense. Technology is going to advance with or without you.

BioShock just showed you that you dont need a 50 gig Bluray to have fckin good game. It dont need 10 gig of sound to immerse yourself in the game. It dont need HDMI to have good graphics. It dont need wireless wifi to have fun. And you dont need to spend that extra money to enjoy good games NOW. But then you can always wait for KillZone 2 to come out because of its beautiful trailer.

intrakitt... obviously you dont know sony or nintendo. unfortunatly this gen i have had to get all three of my systems replaced. both sony and nintendo overnighted me a new system while my 360 i had to wait more than a month to get it back. Intrakitt The 360 by and large is not a "defective console"...if that's all you have against it well, you're stupid. Obviously not everyones has broken down, mine included. Even if it does, however, Microsoft sends you a frickin box with everything you need to ship it back to them for repairs, and it's all completely free. How that's a bad thing in anyway, I'll never know. There's never been customer support that great from Sony or Nintendo...ever...plus, the 360 has more and better games right now. Period.

Of course it had higher sales, The Month after a price drop was announced? If Sony can keep beating 360 in the months leading to Christmas then THAT will be a stat worth noting.

Is the surge while supplies last too? Realistically, the race is over, Wii is #1 360 #2 and PS3 is going to remain third... with mgs4 or not. The part people don't get is that while PS3 is growing the 360 is expanding on a huge installed base at the same pace even before the price drop.

So let me get this straight: every night when the rest of us are mashing on our controllers and having a jolly ol' time on the 360, you guys are sitting there imagining about how cool games like Heavenly Sword, Killzone 2 and MGS4 will be? Killzone 1 did not even meet expectations so I'm not sure what you guys are waiting for. Wow...way to sell yourselves short. You might as well buy clothing and put them out in the sun for a year to bring out its "potential" before wearing. I heard the PS3 makes a good cutting board for sashimi.

Geez. It gets SO OLD reading a story like this only to see the tired old "my system is bigger than yours" fights break out. I'm a sucker though, so here's my 2 cents: When I found out that GTAIV was going to come out on both systems, I decided to break down and buy a next-gen console. I originally decided to get the x-box360 because it was cheaper. The more I researched the issue, the more I was convinced that the 360 was not for me. I was annoyed that I would have to buy add-ons for all of the stuff I wanted, charger, wireless ethernet, hd-dvd player, online play, etc., but the real dealbreaker on the 360 for me was the failure rate. Consumer electronics have an average failure rate of about 1%. The 360 had an estimated failure rate of 30% to 40%. That's just unacceptable. I applaude Microsoft for their warranty extension, but I simply will not purchase something that has such a high probability of failure. I felt like I would be rewarding Microsoft for marketing a bad design. At that point, I gave up. I could not justify spending $600 on a console. Once the price dropped, I pulled the trigger. To my suprise, I found out that I really got a lot more than I payed for. I got a game console, blu-ray player, upconvert dvd player, wireless ethernet adapter, rechargeable controler, card reader, media player all in one. I can view photos stored on my comp on my hdtv, without any wires, same for music and movies. I can upgrade the ps3 hard drive at any time, and can do it rather cheaply. I can play online games with friends, and do it for free. I totally agree that the 360 has a larger selection of games, but I've had loads of fun playing Rainbow6, Oblivian, Resistance, and several of my favorite PS2 games while I wait 'til November for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Medal of Honor Airborne, Kane & Lynch: Dead Men, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, and Haze. Early next year I can play L.A. Noire, Heist, The Agency, Lost, SOCOM Confrontation, and best of all, GTA IV. There's even evidence that Bioshock will be available on the PS3 next year. If not, there's always my PC that I can play it on. If Microsoft ever releases a stable 360, I will put it back into consideration. As of today, that's not yet happened.

I could care less about sales anymore. The first party stuff alone make the purchase of my ps3 worth it imo. I mean just look at the ps3's amazing first party lineup for this year through 2008. Warhawk, Uncharted, R&C, Lair, Heavenly Sword, Infamous, GT5etc. The list goes on and on.

jameston80 did a great analogy. Looks like what a 3rd grader would come up with. Why is the 60gb PS3 obsolete? Just because it's not going to be manufactured in the near future? Will it not be able to play the new games that come out because it has 20gb less of hard drive space? I guess 60gb is better than having "some next-gen" console with no hard drive at all for certain models.

Ok if you think about it i have both system and so far i only want 2 games on the 360 which are Mass Effect and Halo 3, and on the PS3 i have UT3, Lair, Haze, Heavenly Sword, Warhawk, Stanglehold collector's edition with the movie on the same blu ray, Graw2 because of the extra free maps, Ratchet, Uncharted, GT5 Pro, Wipeout HD, and i may be forgetting some, that is already 10 exclusives. I don't i think that the ps3 has my holiday money this year. So far for next year I'm getting Kilezone 2, Infamous, MGS4, and Burnout paradise Being that is is lead on the PS3, and i still don't what is coming to 360

@ebookerd1 Neither PS3 or Wii have a ton of games, but they do have good ones. And the only reason why X360 has more is because Microsoft thought it was a good idea to launch a defective console a year earlier to gain marketshare. Not something I respect them for at all and another reason why I will not support them. I'm happy Sony and Nintendo took the extra time to get it right.

Good for the PS3, certainly. The Wii is a waste, though well promoted to attract the senseless masses...I'm more than happy to sit out the Wii craze and wait for ensuing generations of more interactive gaming, rather than settling for a mediocre console with a promising control-scheme.

Funny how whenever there's news about the PS3, so many, many passionate comments fly up. Who said the PS3 has nothing this fall? 1. Heavenly Sword 2. Warhawk 3. Lair 4. Playstation Home Service 5. (I don't get why so many people forget about) UNREAL TOURNAMENT 3 Besides UT3 (which is coming out in Nov. 13th), I only know about the games coming out from August to September, nothing else. And if you take a look at Heavenly Sword (like actually check out the game) it looks like one of the most beautiful games I've ever seen. A good number of people have been putting much time and effort into it in order it to be almost cinematic like. Time will tell how the end result is, but HS looks very promising. And you can't forget about Unreal Tournament 3, since the added PC and PS3 crossplay as well as keyboard and mouse support (To me, this is important) makes it a very nice game. Plus you can't complain about graphics for UT3 because it's run on the exact same engine and made by the same creators of Gears of War. I'm forgetting some good games because I'm not sure when the release date is but feel free to add to my list of games coming out this fall.

I really dont think halo 3 is going to sell that much 360's evreybody that is getting that game probably already has a 360 because people have been excpecting that game to come out since the 360 came out so i doubt that the 360 will pass wii or maybe not even ps3 august or september.

Well, Xbox 360 had a $100 price drop this month, so we shall see who wins for August... I'm willing to bet still Nintendo, but second should be MS. ... I wonder if news that EA spends more effort finishing 360 games before ps3 games will affect sales at all?...

@Yuck_Too : No I didn't just say MGS4 only. What I mean is that the PS3 still has potential to have sale surges for each big game that comes out that people think is worth to spending for the systems value. And still have potential big sale surges for each price drop the PS3 makes. While the already 2yrs old X360 was cheap enough to get and MS pushed enough games for any gamers to choose from would already of reached it's peak sales by now. While Halo 3 might push some sales but I don't think that much people would still be sitting around waiting to buy X360 just for Halo 3 only like if it was the only game thats worth buying for the system.

As for the ps3 in price drop, well look at it this way, anyone who bought a 60 gb ps3 with the new price....you now own an obosolete system....they are no longer made, 360 cuts its price, but they still sell all 3 systems for choice, and the choice is great.

Happy "360-overtaking" day to PS3 owners... So this was only in Canada? Wonder if they'll able to do it on a worldwide basis... Anyways Halo 3 is coming out so unfortunately this event will be quickly forgotten... good job anyways

This was obviously going to happen because of the price drop. There's really no suprise to this. Now that the XBox 360 has a price drop in Aug and Bioshock has just been released the roles will be reversed when the Aug NPD numbers roll out next month. Aug is a good month for XBox 360. Blue Dragon is coming out next and Stanglehold looks hot as well. With Halo 3, Eternal Sonata coming out in Sept and PGR4, Half Life 2: Orange Box, Ace Combat 6 & Mass Effect coming in Oct, now is a good time to get a XBox 360. This fall is going to be awesome for 360 owners.

the ps3 sold well in july cause of the price drop. It was only 50 bucks more than the 360 for the whole month practically. the 360 now got its price drop and it is cheaper than the ps3 by a 100 and barely 100 mroe than the gamecube and it is seeing more sales at the best buy i work at. I don't know the exact number cause i work in the mp3 and audio systems section but the other workers told me that the 360 is selling better this month than the ps3. Everyone in Canada should check out labour day sales for games later.

Most people buying the PS3 right now (me included) are buying it cause they already have a Wii or 360... I'm not trying to piss off you fan boys... But the fact is PS3 is in third place... By alot. Also, I'm a PS3 owner... My PS3 get's used more as a Blu-ray player then a gaming machine, serious lack of decent games. My Wii and 360 are superior to my PS3 for now... Until PS3 can excite me with a exclusive title, say Ratchet and Clank, It can't compete with things like Bioshock, Gears of War, and Mario Strikers. Mario Strikers has nearly seemless online play and Bioshock & Gears look amazing. Not a single PS3 game out right now can compair.

--Kiaininja -- That comment makes no sence. People who want to play Halo 3 would already have a 360...but people who want MGS4 will wait to get a PS3? You spun the same cause and effect 2 opposite ways to make your point...

It'll be interesting to see what happens in the future when the 60GB PS3 is phased out and is replaced by the higher priced 80GB. The 360 just experienced a CDN$100 price cut, so now it's the CDN$549 PS3 vs. the CDN$399 xbox360. That's quite a difference.
