NPD: July sees PS3 overtake 360 in Canada

Game-industry sales surge 62 percent north of the border, thanks to post-price-cut surge of Sony console; Wii, DS still dominate.

When game-industry research firm NPD releases US retail figures for the month of July, some analysts expect that they will show the PlayStation 3 outsold the Xbox 360 for the first time, thanks to a pre-E3 Media & Business Summit price drop. Regardless of how the numbers shake out in the US, NPD confirmed to GameSpot today that the PS3 outsold Microsoft's console north of the border.

The PS3 managed to move more than 15,000 systems in Canada for the month, overtaking the 13,000 Xbox 360s sold. However, both consoles were bested handily by Nintendo's Wii, which racked up more than 36,000 sales for the month. On the portable side of the market, the DS topped all non-PC platforms in July with almost 46,000 units sold, well ahead of the PlayStation Portable's 6,000 tally.

The industry as a whole was up more than 62 percent for the month, to C$84 million ($78.9 million) from the C$51.8 million ($48.7 million) it managed in July 2006. Portable hardware sales were up slightly, but console hardware revenues for the month more than tripled, leading to an overall 11 percent increase for systems, up to C$35.8 million ($33.6 million).

On the software side of the business, growth was significant, but not as explosive. Overall software sales were up more than 30 percent, to C$38.2 million ($35.9 million), led by a 43 percent increase in console software. Portable games only managed 8 percent growth for the month. Rounding out the industry picture, accessory sales were up more than 78 percent, to C$10 million ($9.4 million).

The best-selling games chart yielded a few surprises. Activision's Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s was the best-selling new release, but only managed to make it to the fourth spot. Nintendo's Wii Play (which comes packed with a spare Wii Remote) was the best-seller of the month, and the original PlayStation 2 Guitar Hero II topped its Encore by coming in second. A value pack of randomly assorted Xbox games came in third. The rest of the best-selling software titles are listed below.

Canada's top 10 best-selling games for July 2007:

1. Wii Play with Wii Remote--Wii
2. Guitar Hero II with guitar--PS2
3. Value Pack (included games vary)--Xbox
4. Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s--PS2
5. Pokémon Diamond--DS
6. Mario Party 8--Wii
7. Guitar Hero II with guitar--Xbox 360
8. Transformers: The Game--PS2
9. Pokémon Pearl--DS
10. New Super Mario Bros.--DS

For the people that say just wait till Halo 3, well guess what whoever wanted a X360 for that game would of gotten the system already. I don't think their would be that much people out there not getting a X360 by now just waiting around for Halo3 and passing up GoW. While in PS3 case people will buy more systems when the big games start rolling out like UT3, Heavenly Sword, and MGS4.

finally, some of you are figuring out what the ps3 is really about; blu-ray player that can play games. ps3 is not a dedicated gaming console, what it is is a dirt-cheap blu-ray player that happens to be able to play games but disguises itself has a gaming phenom. i had my ps3 for 7 months before i finally sold it. gamespot scolded me for putting up an ad on the forum's to sell the piece -o-sh*t 3!! for a true gaming experience the 360 is the only way to go: best on-line service EVER, killer games/exclusives, and is a media hub with the ability to connect to your pc and transfer media via wireless/cat-5 cable. ps3 may have more this/that but i get more joy from playing the 360 which is why i now have $500 in my pocket and no ps3 taking up space in my entertainment center.

360 overtake the Wii? Are you dreaming kid? Wii is hammering out sales twice as fast as any other console. You did read the article right?

Canadian gamers are smarter then the average person...we simply rushed out to get the EE chip before the over-priced gimped PS3 version is all that remains.

Only 2000 more huh? That's not really a whole lot unless they can keep it up. And seeing as how Halo 3 is just around the corner, I doubt they will. But, good news for Sony anyway.

"phillipsnm Ensabuhnur .... Just got my 3rd 360... The problem Ensabuhnur is you are on your 3rd 360. I bought a PS3 because I didn't want an apple white brick...or to have to pay to play online." So let me get this straight, you bought a ps3 because you don't want to play games and you're playing an inferior online service. Virtual Fighter says it all brother. psn is the worst online service. That's fantastic that you spent over 700 on a system that a) doesn't offer you anything b) price is going down every 8 months c) for an online system that nobody knows what to do with.. I'm stilll on my first 360 since launch and plz don't forget about ps2.. I went through 5.

I know fanboys are going to love this news, but canada's top ten game list also has "value pack" for the xbox? and not one ps3 games so i guess people bought the ps3 for it's real reason a cheap blu-player not for a games console. If they brought the system for games at lease one game would make the top ten and no game did.

considering the 360 has been out a year longer it's holding it's own - that says a lot. a year from now, how many Wiis is still going to be flying off the shelves? how many PS3s?

MS are sooo in trouble .. they need a destinct price advantage over the PS3 and to be as close to the price of the Wii as possible. a $50 price cut doesn't amount to much ... i think the PS3 will start to rally sales when games start to come out .. and look at the 360 it currently has all teh best games and people are flocking to buy the Wii which has still yet to get a good game that last you more than 30 minutes ! people are crazy for that Wii

Wow Canadians are just itching to buy a paper weight. I've had my Ps3 for over 6 months - currently own 4 games for it. And only looking to get one game for it this year. Hopefully next year will be better. Just got my 3rd 360 and it's the center of entertainment in my house, especially with Halo around the corner and Bioshock being one of the most amazing games i've ever seen. To me the 360 should be mauling everyone else

I bought my PS3 after the price drop and I don't own a game for it yet. I rented R:FoM, which was a decent game. Microsoft is in the zone this year and has multiple killer apps. The only reason I got a PS3 when I did was I wanted the Emotion Engine. I might get two or three games for it depending on the reviews. But if I bought their system and end up doing little more than rent games for it then Sony will be taking a large hit from consumers like me.

This is no surprise you can expect the same in the U.S when we start to hit the PS3 game avalanche a bit after or around this Christmas. Sure ps3 has had a very rocky start but with a price drop you can expect a come back

Go Canada. Good numbers, I hope the US echoes such good market confidence. And once again nice job Nintendo. Not only did the Big N's systems cream the competition, but 5 of the top 10 games were on their platforms, including the number 1 game. Keep it up Nintendo, and get me that Metroid Prime 3.

The only reason PSP sales (along with Lumines sales by like 800%) ever went up was because the Noobz team found that exploit, $ony shouldn't be taking credit for stuff that they are actually attempting to prevent. So no wonder in barely any time their sales suck once again. The same will happen with their PSP 1.1. If they had any brains they would release some pro-homebrew FW stat. And I DO own a PSP, I am just not dumb enough to plop down money for a new unimproved PSP with a new anti-CFW motherboard. Not sure why people are buying more PS3s than 360s, but whatever that will be their problem over the next few months I guess.

To Daveg1: What are you talking about?! The PS3 does not cost less in Canada. It costs about 100 dollars more than it does in America! Although with the exchange rates they cost about the same.

For those complaining about PS3 lack of games. They are coming. I've had one since Christmas. I remember between February and May a pretty much no game drought. The end of this month sees Warhawk (disk gets you a nice headset with it.) There are several releases in September alone that I want. (Lair, Heavenly Sword, Dirt, Oblivion GotY) October has Folklore, Ratchet and Clank Future, and Eye of Judgment So far it is looking like a very broke holiday season.

No real surprise, when you make a nice price drop or offer a much better package then it's normal for people to jump on it, now with the drop in price of the Xbox 360 it will be interesting to see how the sales are the next month.

The way I see it, the only reason the ps3 is outselling right now is becaues everybody who was holding out till some good games came out decided to buy now before they can't get a system that'll still play their ps2 games. Once this batch of older systems is done, no more emotion chip and only the larger HD based PS3 will be left on the market.

I don't see why so many people are worried about which console is selling the best. I am a Sony fan myself but still think all the others are great .It all comes down to what you want to use your games console for. Each console has so many different features, and some great games. Remember the days when all you could do was turn it on and play, that was it . Hmmmm...simpler times, great times, great games and that is all that should matter now.

'Franzkill Also in the UK you can get one right now for £425 with 3 games and and extra SIX-AXIS controller. Talk about good value.' Good value??? Those 3 games you get with your system proable include Resistance and Motorstorm which are the ONLY half-decent games out for it!! What happens in an month when your bored of all three? You'll have a lovely new system with rubbish to play on it, and pay at least £39.99 for that rubbish! There are no multiplatforms out which are better for it (save Oblivion graphics) and they are all more expensive for inferior ports, no near future release multiplatforms which look like they'll be any better than 360 versions, being as most of them have been designed and built using superior 360 developer tools (hmm....CoD4 and GTAIV anyone??), and 360 console exclusive like BioShock and just round the corner Halo 3 that will sell systems for at least up until Xmas! Right now the only place to be for a next-gen gaming is X360. 2000 more pfft, we'll see what figures are next month and month after that due to BioShock and Halo 3!

Frankly, I'm an X-box fan (although I admittedly did and still do play my PS2 -much- more than my original X-box, and will admit that it's a more reliably machine with a library of games that makes the original X-box's look almost pitiful in comparison) but I will admit that now that the PS3's gone down in price, that it's not surprising that it's doing better, because it's actually a pretty good system. The one main point that sticks out for me is that it seems to be a quieter, cooler machine than seems less prone to breaking down than the X-box 360 (which I've recently bought after the price break) but I have to admit that its small selection of games doesn't impress me at the moment, and that I find Sony's emphasis on hardware over price and market penetration this generation to be absolutely confounding! Hardware-wise, the PS2 was the weakest of all 3 systems last-gen and it succeeded because the system's name-brand recognition (and the big library that came along with it) + reasonable price made it a HUGE hit and achieve a critical mass of market saturation despite the fact that it was the weakest console, and proved the point that it IS in fact the games/fun that matter, not the sheer power of the system itself. Right now, although I still think the PS3 is far too expensive, I also agree with those who say that it just doesn't have enough quality exclusive games to make it seem like a worthwhile purchase. Resistance and the upcoming Heavenly Sword look interesting (especially Resistance) but I'm not going to spend $500 just to play 1 or 2 games!

who's complaining about the price, the thing is what's the reason ? Is there a reason ? Is there a Bioshock, or a Gears or a Dead Rising ? come on, brand supporting is non-sense. Much better than price-drops would be awesome games!

As of now (as in RIGHT NOW) there is simply no reason to be complaning about the price of the PS3. You can import one from SuccessHK for like £250-300 for crying out loud. Also in the UK you can get one right now for £425 with 3 games and and extra SIX-AXIS controller. Talk about good value. The trouble with the Wii is that its cheap but you pretty much get what you pay for. A short-lived console with dated hardware. Just look at Far Cry on the Wii lol.

2K difference still falls short though. Until PS3 > 360 by 10K margin, this isn't news, it's meh..., right... Appart from the esoteric BS that is the "brand-supporting" (support your football club, FFS!), ppl have to understand a console is as good as the games it delivers, and we know who's delivering.

That means only 2,000 more PS3 systems were sold in the month! How in the world is a gap of seven million systems supposed to be overcome when a gain of only 2,000 systems is achieved during a one month period of time, especially since Microsoft lowered the price of the Xbox 360 in August and the Xbox 360 is now experiencing sales that have more than doubled. This doesn't seem like an important piece of news...no offense, Gamespot.

News to hear for Sony fans that their console is picking up speed. Makes sense to have it as a headline, it shows they are getting a little more movement going in the console wars. Agreed that the PS3 needs more titles, at least it's showing that the PS3's little price-drop has had an effect though, and should also give a hint to Sony that they're doing something right.

WTF are they playing up there?? Look at those Top 10 Games...lol... Everytime I look at those sales charts, I understand why the companies keep producing those licensed movie games or stuff like sims...a pity the market is dominated by casual gamer's sales. Here in europe only casual gamers play games like that (except New Super Mario Bros of course)

i have a 360 and it is the best console to have right now...but i do feel like the 360 is slowly losing its grip on the market, already people r beginning to get bored of its sheer lack of variety when it comes to putting out good quality games, its all gettin a bit too repetitive for me...e.g. a great game comes out in a few days (bioshock)...but AGAIN its another shoot em up (yawn)
