PSP price drops to $170

Sony celebrates its portable system's second anniversary by trimming a handful of Hamiltons off the hardware's Core Pack.

The PlayStation Portable was released in North America just over two years ago, and to mark the occasion, Sony is dropping the price on the bare-bones package of its gaming handheld. Effective today, the PSP Core Pack (a system with AC adaptor and battery) retails for $169.99, a $30 drop from its previous price point of $199.99.

This is the first price drop for a system package in the PSP line. While the original $249.99 Value Pack was replaced by the $199.99 Core Pack, part of the cost reduction was due to Sony's leaving out accessories like the 32MB memory card.

Sony also announced that the PSP titles Daxter and Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror have now been included in the Greatest Hits line of games and should retail for $19.99.

Analysts welcomed the news, with Lazard Capital Markets' Colin Sebastian saying it should be a shot in the arm for the system.

"We expect a modest step-up in PSP unit sales during an otherwise seasonally slower period for the video game industry," Sebastian said in a note to investors today. "We note that a Wal-Mart promotion on Black Friday last year generated significant sales volume for the PSP at a discounted price of $169, providing one indication of potential consumer demand."

In his own note to investors, Pacific Crest Securities' Evan Wilson said that the system has had trouble meeting sales expectations since its launch, in large part because of its price, and that the price cut should help address that. However, Wilson said the move will likely have a limited effect on the company's finances.

I just got a PSP (Entertainment pack), Its really cool and everything... but the lack of infrastructured games is really a let down... I thought Monster Hunter Freedom was for online play? Turns out its Ad-Hoc only (with other players PSPs in close range). Come on Sony, If you had better Infrastructured online games then alot more people will buy the PSP! Look what Nintendo is doing with the DS?! I also own a DS and i play it more than my PSP (Animal Crossing WW is addictive because of the wifi online mode!) Monster Hunter Freedom could of been the "It" game for the PSP's online mode.... to bad because it feels like its missing something...

Hopefully the price will drop in Australia. I want a PSP more than a DS, but because the PSP is $300AU and the DS is $190AU I will probably just get the DS unless a substantial price drop comes around.

Miclowgunman, I agree that homebrew isn't as active on DS as it is for PSP, but I wouldn't ignore all that their is. I think the real choice comes down to hardware preference over software. I prefer touch screen interation. If I had a PSP I'd probably never use this disc drive.

A product isn't for everybody, but just because it doesn't hold value for you doesn't mean it's crap. Wow, so that jackass watches movies on his "flat panel" TV, great. So what about those who do use that feature on the PSP? Should Sony say; '"Sorry guys, Jackoff Johnny doesn't need it, so it's going". Wow phoenix Wright and Trauma center!!! Oh wait those games are old, Oct 2005, any new "innovative" games? Much like the Wii the DS is a one trick Pony, it has a touch screen, great. What other wonderful titles does the DS have? Wario Ware and Brain Games? Nintendogs? Pokemon? Another Metroid/Mario/Zelda? Again what good games are there for the DS? I don't know how Nintendo got you guys to drink the koolaid, but damn I want them to teach me. $20 more for a PSP, it's a no brainer unless you're ages 6-12. To the guy complaining about Memory Stick prices? Have you not looked around recently? You can get a 4GB stick for $90 and a 1GB stick for $30 and those aren't sale prices. I've seen 1GB sticks on sale for $14. Oh it looks like Phoenix Wright has defended Sony ;) << LINK REMOVED >>

well every1 both the ds and the psp r pretty good...being me i wood choose the psp...only becus ive had more experience and the graphic sgameplay is so much better...but the ds is really pretty good for chatting and all that...price drops are random so u relaly dont know when they appear. be lucky to get the systems when the price does drop and be aware of it. its a really good price for the psp and its worth the money even for 250 dollars in the US just becus of the mp3 and online capability.

9 out of 10 of you PSP/Sony haters were in line for 2 days waiting for one when it first came out, so just be quiet. The DS and PSP are 2 different systems with 2 different experiences...no reason to compare. Both are great in there own ways. I'm glad for those who get to but a PSP because of the price drop!

To: Chernnunos (and whoever) What I ment by versatility was the psp's ability to change. A DS is what you get. You have no hope for a service update to fix issues or add new content. Sony could come out with an update tomarrow that would allow you to go to the playstation store and download ps1 games. And I promise you that if sony were to release some sort of programming app. to appease the homebrew crowd out, sales of the psp would sky rocket. How many hacks for the DS are there? Can you get a camera for it? how about GPS? To buy the PSP as a movie player would be stupid, but a portable DVD player can't play off a memory card, and other memory card base products are more expensive. I could go on about how almost everyone who owns a psp uses the MP3 player ability and other features of the PSP. It just urks me when someone says,"If I wanted to watch movies, I'd buy a $60 portable dvd player". I say, go ahead. But if you what a media box that plays multiple formats of digital video and music, stores pictures for viewing (great for storing mapquest directions), and also plays a good lineup of games(MGS: PO, MHF, DJMax, ect.), then get a PSP. The DS is a good system. Nintendo has a lot of momentum from GB. I'd say Sony has done quite well for a new system in a Monopolized enviroment.

I will say that the PSP is a decent bit of hardware but like the PS3 it focuses too much on the console and not on the games (which explains the lack of decent games, yeah yeah theres Tekken and GTA but how are they innovative or original?) and also the UMD films were a financial disaster for Sony. If you wana watch films buy a £60 portable dvd player not pay £150 that does something worse. Granted i still play my PS2 so dont call me a fanboy or nething.

DS has innovative games (check out Phoenix Wright and Trauma Center) which make full use of the touch screen. The microphone is something yet to be put to good use (although its clever in Brain Training).

I just have to ask, what games does everybody spooge for on the DS? All i ever read is how much better of a system the DS is. But when i'm at the store all i see are games based on nickelodeon cartoons or the 100th different mario game they can pipe out.

I sometimes wonder if anyone really knows how much it costs to make these systems. Not just parts, but labor and shipping and such. Heck, Microsoft was loosing money on the 360 when it first came out. Anyway, price cuts are nice. PSP will never be cheaper then DS, but DS will never have the capabilitys and versatility of the PSP. I say the PSP helps keep Nintendo on there toes to make the DS games like they do. If there was no competition then they could make crappy games and no one would know the difference.
