PSP price drops to $170

Sony celebrates its portable system's second anniversary by trimming a handful of Hamiltons off the hardware's Core Pack.

The PlayStation Portable was released in North America just over two years ago, and to mark the occasion, Sony is dropping the price on the bare-bones package of its gaming handheld. Effective today, the PSP Core Pack (a system with AC adaptor and battery) retails for $169.99, a $30 drop from its previous price point of $199.99.

This is the first price drop for a system package in the PSP line. While the original $249.99 Value Pack was replaced by the $199.99 Core Pack, part of the cost reduction was due to Sony's leaving out accessories like the 32MB memory card.

Sony also announced that the PSP titles Daxter and Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror have now been included in the Greatest Hits line of games and should retail for $19.99.

Analysts welcomed the news, with Lazard Capital Markets' Colin Sebastian saying it should be a shot in the arm for the system.

"We expect a modest step-up in PSP unit sales during an otherwise seasonally slower period for the video game industry," Sebastian said in a note to investors today. "We note that a Wal-Mart promotion on Black Friday last year generated significant sales volume for the PSP at a discounted price of $169, providing one indication of potential consumer demand."

In his own note to investors, Pacific Crest Securities' Evan Wilson said that the system has had trouble meeting sales expectations since its launch, in large part because of its price, and that the price cut should help address that. However, Wilson said the move will likely have a limited effect on the company's finances.

Eh, the PSP is looking better than it did at launch, but I'm still not ready to buy another game system. Besides, I'm quite happy with my DS. But definitely, at that price, if I could afford it I'd finally go for a PSP. Now if only they could realize that the PS3 is the one that desperately needs a price cut...

Sweet! Time to get another PSP! Comparing the PSP to the DS is like comparing apples to oranges. The DS is a gaming platform while the PSP is a multi-media platform. I use the PSP primarily for video/music playback (thanks to the 4Gb card) and quick web surfing. Games are of secondary only for those rating 8 and above. Of course, those games are great to play on the go too. Our two DS units are now sit inside the closet collecting dust. Our 10 years old wouldn't touch it anymore beside playing Advance Wars or Metroid Pinball once in a while. Interestingly, the 4 years start picking up Mario. Nintendo has its market position toward younger generations, just like the Wii. PSP/PS3/360 have their own market spaces. We are just out-growing the DS despite its innovative dual screen design.

To KingovGames: Some simple research will yield some interesting results for you. Such as Sony's track record of lowering the costs of hardware every two years. The earliest PS3 drop would probably take place for the Holidays to impact sales of the big AAA software splurge of Fall/Winter (Lair, MGS4, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, Ratchet & Clank, Little Big Planet, Killzone 2, etc)

What Sony should really be doing is bringing down the price of the PS3. But who really cares if it doesn't have any games. I think they brought down the price of the PSP to compensate for the failure of the PS3. They may have just figured out no one's gonna buy their $600 systems, it will become another Gamecube, and they better concentrate on the PSP.

I'll get one again later this year for Disgaea, Final Fantasy I & II Anniversary, Final Fantasy Crisis Core, Puzzle Quest, God of War, Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles, Metal Slug Anthology and maybe Crush, Valhalla Knights, Silent Hill Origins and Jeanne D'Arc, depending on how those turn out.

"We note that a Wal-Mart promotion on Black Friday last year generated significant sales volume for the PSP at a discounted price of $169, providing one indication of potential consumer demand." ...Does this guy even know what Black Friday is? It's when EVERYONE in America goes out and begins shopping for Christmas, or for themselves since electronic prices are slashed to insane levels. You can't just use that as a context, although a price drop might help the PSP as it is struggling like crazy.

Hey, Game Gear wasn't bad. It was considerably ahead of its own time when it was released. That Sega-VS-Nintendo things was a matter of influence (leading to third-party support which was obviously Nintendo's trump card against the technological advancement of the game gear). Also, Sega's stupid marketing tactics didn't help.

Ahhh Tnasty... Let me explain it this way...these are TOYS. Game Boy beat out Sega, why?...Sega was better in every possibly way hands down...GB won cause it was cheaper. Sorry if you don't understand how that might be related to this, but please, keep up the good hall monitoring job you got going here.

Im glad to hear this now more people will buy it and developers will start making more games on it, not just ps2 ports. Its awsome to see games like GTA, ridge racer and need for speed in your hands, its a way different experience then the ds and shouldn't be compared against it.

I don't understand peoples hate for the PSP at all. It's a sad time when people don't like the concept of competition. I own both a PSP and a DS. To tell you the truth, I play my PSP a lot more than I do my DS. The only time I play my DS is when I got someone around the house and a few hours to kill. Besides that it doesn't hold much weight. As goes for the PSP there aren't many games that my freinds would want to play with me causing that whole Adhoc thing to be useless. ;o The things you do.

@Tnasty11: what is trolling? you've called out have the people on this board for this. Anyway, the PSP price cut is pretty sweet IMO. I've wanted one for awhile but for the exact reason Wilson stated, the price was too high for me.

Just because a system is more powerful than other it doesnt mean it's gonna win. DS Lite hello?!?!?! Clearly Nintendo knows their business and Sony does not.

I agree with fluffebunnie ,not everyone have to like the DS,but the truth is the DS has the better games, but the PSP has a lot more functionality ,so in both cases is a smart buy,I just think that DS has the better games, but sure, the PSP has some great games as well.

Makes you wonder if Nintendo will counter Sony by dropping the price on the Lite. With this move, I'm sure Sony will take up a little bit more of the market. Eh well who knows.

fluffbunne - don't take the narrow-minded approach of assuming DS owners are casuals or nongamers. I'm a hardcore gamer - until recently you could not get new Castlevania games on the PSP - and frankly Portrait of Ruin is still better than Rondo of Blood. Only a fanboy would buy into a system with inferior games - most DS games don't use the touch screen *at all* - at least the ones I play - but they do use the two screens to counter not having one larger screen. It's a pity that Sony botched things with the PSP so badly, it had the potential to be a great system. I think it will finally be obliterated in a year or two when Nintendo releases the next handheld in the Gameboy line. Once the PSP loses the screen size / graphics power advantage compared to the DS, it will be pushed aside, much like the Gamegear. Pity.
