PSP price drops to $170

Sony celebrates its portable system's second anniversary by trimming a handful of Hamiltons off the hardware's Core Pack.

The PlayStation Portable was released in North America just over two years ago, and to mark the occasion, Sony is dropping the price on the bare-bones package of its gaming handheld. Effective today, the PSP Core Pack (a system with AC adaptor and battery) retails for $169.99, a $30 drop from its previous price point of $199.99.

This is the first price drop for a system package in the PSP line. While the original $249.99 Value Pack was replaced by the $199.99 Core Pack, part of the cost reduction was due to Sony's leaving out accessories like the 32MB memory card.

Sony also announced that the PSP titles Daxter and Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror have now been included in the Greatest Hits line of games and should retail for $19.99.

Analysts welcomed the news, with Lazard Capital Markets' Colin Sebastian saying it should be a shot in the arm for the system.

"We expect a modest step-up in PSP unit sales during an otherwise seasonally slower period for the video game industry," Sebastian said in a note to investors today. "We note that a Wal-Mart promotion on Black Friday last year generated significant sales volume for the PSP at a discounted price of $169, providing one indication of potential consumer demand."

In his own note to investors, Pacific Crest Securities' Evan Wilson said that the system has had trouble meeting sales expectations since its launch, in large part because of its price, and that the price cut should help address that. However, Wilson said the move will likely have a limited effect on the company's finances.

hopefully this means that there will be more games made for the systems power, and not just ports. i like the psp, but i won't buy games that make me feel like they would be better on the ps2.

The Core pack, AC adapter and a friggin battery should be no more than $129.99. For $170 bucks everyone should get all the bell and whistles plus one of their hella weak ass games. I like Sony but they can HOOVER MY ROOSTER as far as their pricing is concerned for a PSP or a PS3 for that matter.

I bought it in Nov 2006 $160 New and $20 more for a 2 yrs extended warranty. Been putting a lot of mileage on it and everything is still working fine. I finished MOH:Heroes, Call of Duty, Dungeon Siege, MGS:PO, and now working on completing XMEN Legends2, Puzzle Quest, and Yugioh tagforce.

I'd say it's worth $150 new, no more. I bought mine used for $140, so I know it's not worth $170, $200, or anything else. Face it, it's a two year old handheld. The price should really be around $100 considering how obselete the technology is!

A matter of weeks after I made the decision to buy a DS. It was just a matter of $20 whether I'd buy the PSP too :(. Oh well, Advance Wars alone is worth the opportunity cost.

Still too much money for a handheld. They're going to have to lower the price more in addition to getting better games if they plan on increasing its longevity.

I've got both, and I still haven't found a great reason to use my PSP for anything other than an MP3 player thus far, but the upcoming ports and remakes will hopefully justify the purchase in the near future (particularly Disgaea). Even so, it would have to be cheaper than a DS to make it truly competitive. With all the great DS and GBA games out, there's just no comparison - even with the weaker graphical capability and "gimmick" of the DS.

This price drop should help to spur sales somewhat. And the price of memory sticks is a lot cheaper than it was two years ago. A four gigabyte stick is not insanely expensive. In addition, the game library has matured, so there are lots of good franchises (new and old) represented, so there's something for everyone. Sure, there are some who have played lots of those games on the PS2 enough to grow tired of them, but for everybody else, it's like a home console experience in the palm of your hand. Not bad at all. The marketplace is a lot different from two years ago. This doesn't mean that I expect the PSP to start outselling the DS, but I don't think that should be Sony's goal. Keeping the PSP market growing in terms of both games and gamers is what really counts.

This may help them keep om par with DS sales. Now that it seems like only slightly more $, people will consider both more closely now. The PSP is a great handheld. I love the DS, but the PSP is probably a slightly better unit overall. Why does this stuff always hjappen right AFTER I purchase it?! I've had a DS for a while, but I just broke down and finally bought a PSP just barely 2 months ago, now this... All well, not a big deal to me, good news for anyone who hasn't gotten one yet. However, rumors being that they redesigning the system I might hold off. PSP Lite anyone?... On second thought, I think SoNy is just tring to clear their inventory of the 'old' PSP...

There are plenty of great games for the system and the price drop plus two more GREAT games going greatest hits makes it even more worth it. You've got: WipEout Pure Lumines Loco Roco Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Burnout Legends Tekken: Dark Ressurection Daxter GTA: Liberty City Stories Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror ...and more...

With a UMD burner to go into the pc maybe otherwise ain't interested. Or why don't sony include support for UMD on their blu-ray burner drive. Even they can't be bothered with UMD so can't blame others...

I like price drops. My problem is, I don't wait for them. My PSP has been a great companion. I use it for gaming, movies, listening to tunes, and showing my favorite photos. The battery life is very good, and the display is clear and bright (and wide.) Now I need to get the Location Free TV adapter, and I'll be set!

Can't wait to see that headline again, except with "PS3" instead of PSP. Just a hundred bucks! That's all I ask, Sony! I'll buy your STILL overpriced magic game machine box if you mark it down $100 U.S.!!

Man that psp is a ripp off, my sister bought it 300.00, well 250.00 actually but thats not the point. and then she sold it to me for particular reason i won't get into. So i went to the store to trade it in towards a ps2 thinking i would get a $100 bucks for it, i was told its only worth $50 bucks, i had to double check twice to make sure they understood i was talking about the psp and he said $50 bucks. I just kept it and bought the ps2 when i had the money. Crazy man.

I would've hoped that they would drop the price some more. When I get a PS3 I would wan't to get a PSP at the same time, but it really is a lot of money. A price-cut of the PS3 and the PSP simultaneously would be the right deal for me, then maybe it would be (at least somewhat more) affordable.

Redsyrup Anyways who's going to buy a PSP now that's it's $30 dollars cheaper... does a Hamilton and a Jefferson really keep a console out of reach? That 30 bucks will now make me go out and buy another one since I spilled alcohol on my first PSP. No doubt that drop will increase sales. It's not rocket science. The cheaper things are, people are more likely to buy.

I think Sony invented the $30 price drop and made it cool with consumers. It wasn't that long ago when hardware makers dropped prices in increments of $50. Anyways who's going to buy a PSP now that's it's $30 dollars cheaper... does a Hamilton and a Jefferson really keep a console out of reach?

They need to sell this thing at $130 and see it sell like hotcakes. They need to make it dirt cheap so that they can make the money back on games.

Give me a more sturdy design, then we will talk. The PSP is finally getting some decent games, but outside of the FF: Tactics remake, none of them are really system sellers. How about more original games than ports to go along with the price drop?

I have both of the system : psp and ds, and I also have tons of games for both of system. Now I spend most of time on psp, since nice graphic and powerful hardware that the winning eleven works great on psp. psp should be more sucessful, if there are more great RPG game comes out on it. FFI and FFII wont help for psp, FFVII will do.
