Red Alert 3 for PS3 'on hold'

Electronic Arts confirms that only the Xbox 360 and PC versions of the game will be coming in autumn.

Yesterday, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe revealed that it had "ceased production" on two first-party PlayStation 3 games, The Getaway and Eight Days.

Today, it's Electronic Arts' turn, as the megapublisher has told the press that the PS3 version of the Soviet-themed Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 is also being put into cold storage.

An EA rep simply said, "We can confirm that the development of Red Alert 3 for PS3 has been put on hold. EA LA is focusing resources on development for PC and Xbox 360 which will ship simultaneously this autumn." No reason was given for pulling resources from the PS3 version of the game, or whether gamers could realistically expect work to be continued on it at some point in the future.

Red Alert 3 is the first installment in the Command & Conquer spin-off series since 2001 expansion pack Red Alert 2: Yuri's Revenge. The real-time strategy game takes place in an alternate-technology future where World War III is raging between the US, the Soviet Union, and a never-defeated Imperial Japan. For more information on the game, check out GameSpot's recent preview.

It apears that this is yet another casualty if the difficulty of developing for the PS3. Sony should have made the PS3 more developer friendly like the 360 seems to be. Or they should release something similar to the XNA tools(also used in "real" game development) since that makes it alot easyer for a PC developer to make 360 games.

I'd expect them to can the 360 version before the PS3. At least the PS3 has Keyboard and Mouse support, the ONE thing that keeps console RTS from being worth anyone's time.

What's the difference between a PC and a PS3 (or 360) with 1080p (1920x1080) flat panel and keyboard and mouse? Why RTS only good on PCs?

... but the PS3 supports a mouse and keyboard, what is the problem?!? I'd buy this on PS3, I wouldn't buy it on any other platform. Lost another sale EA you have!

how about everyone who shoves off and says, 'RTS is only for pc and needs mouse and keyboard' then actually PLAY rts on consoles, cos kanes wrath has the best controls for a console rts game and red alert 3 will also have that radial interface, so think before u shove off

I agree sktizo, even though I have not played RA3 or Halo Wars, I fear for the control. I definitely think that RTS requires mouse and keyboard.

ouch! i got modded for speaking the truth. you can't say bad things about rrod360 in gamespot. this might get modded again but basing on the excitement of introducing RTS on the 360 just makes my initial point even more valid. the 360 is a great platform to release beta versions. take my advice or leave it. wait for the final version for the PC or PS3.

I like the idea of intoducing RTS's to consoles, its simply a good variation to all the many FPS's racers etc. I agree the home for RTS's is the PC however as devs become more comfortable with control methods & schemes they will simply develop and become better & better. Just hope 'End War' lives up to my expectations. Starcfaft 2 would be very welcome.

MSG-Deathscythe, So let me get this right, if the 360 simply releases 'Beta' versions of games for the PC, then that must simply mean that almost every PC game ever released is simply a 'Beta' version as they are generally patched / updated on a regular basis for a while after general release. Just because a game is released on one platform first, then moves onto another with added content / tweaks does not make it a 'Beta', its just common sense to incorporate new content & the known bug fixes simply to give the game selling power. Im sure EA have good reason to 'Hold' this game, ultimately it will get released, it will more than likely incorporate additional content that wasnt included in the original build (which is always the case), as people dont want to get a delayed product only to find it is exactly the same as the original its simply good bussiness sense and increases selling power to include the latest additional content, fixes etc.

Honestly, I don't think they are going to make a PS3 version. I mean look at Frontlines: Fuel of War, the company was having major issues in porting the game from the 360 and PC versions so they eventually figured that by the time they get it going, nobody will really care for the game anymore. As many have also said, EA's worked a lot on PC and the 360 having similar coding and such makes it very easy to port from either version but on the other hand, the PS3's coding is very difficult so thats my hunch is that they'll get frustrated trying to port it and then say screw it and cancel it or release a decreased quality version.

maybe they are scared of sales. rts have proved to work on the 360 but havn't been proven on ps3 yet. bfme2 and cmc3 sold well on 360 and thats probably why. also cmc3 has a similar engine so coding is somewhat complete for them and porting is probably there concern for the ps3. im sure it will still be released on ps3. good rts games rarely come for consoles and it would be a missed sale opportunity not to do it. I expect cmc3 and red alert3 on ps3 next year

thenephariouson said: Err.. i think not! as the 360 version is practically the same build as the PC version, so what your effectively saying is that the PS3 version is also better than the PC version.... LOL I understand your frustration, however dont worry as im sure MGS4 will justify your purchase. don't kid yourself. if you think that the RROD360 versions of any games which also came out on PC are the same, you have to read some reviews or better yet own more than one console and maybe even a PC to actually experience it yourself. i understand people like you, if you have the patience to be a fanboy of consoles that break down as often as a pinto, i'm sure beta versions of games can blow you away. i still have a 360 but decided to never buy any more games for it until i'm sure the real versions are not coming out for the PC or PS3. thanks for beta testing for us by the way. patience is a virtue.

Tebbit, thats exactly what was said about FPS's however when 'Shadowrun' was released on Pre-release 360 & PC X platform tests it was found that the 360 owners actually consistently owned PC gamers, they therefore had to 'Tweak' the controls etc to balance the 2 systems, ultimately it simply boils down to practice, i have 'Universe at War' and have won & lost games against PC gamers, you really couldnt tell the difference between PC & 360 gamers its simply a case of practise.

Why would you get this game for a console anyway!? Red Alert has always been way better on PC, and I don't see a new lick of paint or next gen consoles doing it any favours.

@ CorruptGamerGX, Alright, I'll admit, I'm sorry. But I'm not arrogant at all, like I said, I am one of the few gamers who go and look things up before purchasing. I looked at videos, I've read reviews (website ones and personal), I've talked to people personally about the systems and I've actually played a few games here and there for trying out for both systems and I concluded that I'll enjoy the 360 more as of now. I will buy a PS3, hopefully, at the end of this year or early next year. And yes, I will admit it but I USED to be all about the 360 and I didn't really like the PS3 and wii to much, but once I tried them out, I was like "hmmm, this isn't half-bad". So I will own all three systems hopefully by mid-next year if I can. Like I said, its all about preference and what appeals to you and for me thats the 360 and for you thats the PS3.

@09231991 So that's what your username stands for.. I thought it was just a bunch of random numbers that forum spmmers usually use. Maybe I went a little overboard with the cheapness comment, but it does refelct your arrogance. Also my parents don't buy me jack****, I buy all my games/consoles with my own money. I'm also confused by your comments since I always see you bashing the PS3 in most articles and then the next minute it's "I'll buy one in the future". For the last time, I'm not a Sony fanboy and I do mention the Wii unlike you. I don't worship the PS3 but I realise it IS better than Wii and 360 in most ways. The PS3 has games I like and the 360 games has games you like. Enough with the walls of text.

Yeah, as far as I can tell, that video is bang on. The only thing I wasn't sure about, as I'm not a teck guy, is the technical claims made in the video. Some X-box fans really can't handle the idea that Blu-Ray is an added value. You're telling me that you have two game consoles, both at the same price, both with similar games, and a sales rep says "Hey, for an extra $50, I'll throw in a Blu-Ray player. The cheapest one of those is $300," this added value wouldn't play into your buying decision? And you'd pick the system that you have to pay subscription fees every year just to play 100% of the games you already paid $60 each for? Dude, I like my 360, but if you can't see the value here, there's nothing else I can say.

@SlapFacker How is the video full of lies? It has multiple sources to back up everything that's mentioned. Posting in CAPS I see, another sad 360 fanboy that can't handle the truth. Have fun watching HD-DVD's using the 360's failed add-on. Forgot HD-DVD also failed. Blu-Ray > HD-DVD

$400 is not affordable? I'm really starting to believe your cheapness is what makes you so arrogant. Does Sony have to reduce the price to $200 for the *****ing to end. Believe what you want, but I'm not a $ony fanboy. I will admit I hate 360 and its hardware failure problems.

This is for darkride66. I think you need to re-think your opinions before you go online and make a fool of yourself again. The 360 is a superior machine in every way. PSN better than Live? I mean, come on man! Do you even have a 360? I almost don't believe you do with these kinds of false claims. I do have both systems. One to play the best games on and to network my PC to my HDTV, and the other to watch Bluray movies with. Like everyone else who bought a PS3! By the way, it takes like 45 seconds to link your 360 to your PC and your network and extend ALL of your media to the rest of the house. You must be telling us lies! Get outta here with your BS because we aren't buying it!

Yuck_too asked "So why then if you have both a 360 and PS3 do you wait around to play games that according to you don't look as good?" Because I don't buy multiplatform games on my 360. In the past the bulk of my collection was 360 games, and when my console broke I was left with hundreds of dollars in games and no system to play them on. This happened again, and again, and again. I probably should have learned the second time it happened that it wasn't worth it, but it took me 3 times before I figured it out. I traded in almost my entire 360 library and now only buy multiplats on my PS3, and surprisingly, I don't miss gaming on the 360. I personally prefer the DS3 controller, I like the community on PSN better than the screaming, racists juvies on XBL (I would never, never let my kids play on XBL) and my PS3 even sounds better, and I'm not sure why. I have 2 more games I'm planning on buying for my 360, and then I think that's it. If it breaks again after the 3 year warranty is up, I won't be replacing it. As for Divx, I've heard that the 360 can stream from your computer, but my skills and the skills of the X-Box support team have never been able to properly network my computer and my X-Box. I gave up on that a long time ago, and I don't even have to worry about it now. I just throw my shows on my usb hard-drive, plug it into the front of the PS3 and away I go. And my computer is hooked up to my system as well, but I still watch Divx through my PS3 because, guess what, for some reason it sounds far better again. And it's so painless to do. If you can plug in a USB drive, that's all it takes.

--darkride66 -- " I think the 360 having games launched first, or having a slight graphical edge when it comes to ports is more than outweighed by Blu-Ray/Divx" ~~~ So why then if you have both a 360 and PS3 do you wait around to play games that according to you don't look as good? Furthermore both play Divx, and if you have a PS3 who cares about the fact your 360 doesn't play blu-ray movies? I have both so I don't wait, not sure why you do.

nikefreak said "As far as multi-plat games, using those to dignify why you would rather a PS3 is useless as they are on the 360 as well, yet you cite reliability issues with the 360 as the reasoning." It's all colored by your own experiences. Some people had an awful time with the PS2, some have had PS3 troubles. I can't speak to the experiences of others, but personally I've had a terrible time with my 360. It sucks, but what can you do? The answer is clear, whine on internet forums for years. :) @ Yuck_too. I really like Blu-ray's, and they're finally starting to come down in price, which is nice. If it weren't for the problems I had with the 360, I'd be with you, buying 360 multiplats. Up until last fall I was recommending the 360 to anyone who asked (since they reported to finally have a handle on the hardware problems), but I feel the PS3 has finally come into it's own now. I think the 360 having games launched first, or having a slight graphical edge when it comes to ports is more than outweighed by Blu-Ray/Divx and free multiplayer support. It's all a matter of opinion, though.

Hey GS, i got a great idea. In addition to creating news threads with the latest info that enable us gamers to have 'Adult' discussions relating to the article, you should simply create a 'Unique Thread' where all Fanboys, idiots & **** heads can gather to p15S & moan & argue about thier various grievences with their chosen platform, therefore enabling the majority of us to get on and have adult discussions regarding the news article in question. just my opinion as it seems that which ever article you put out, it very quickly declines into the mindless 'Mines bigger than yours' scenario.

--darkride66 -- I got the same beef with my PS3. Nothing has come out I can't play first on the 360. Last title PS3 got played was Uncharted...what's up with that. Everything is delayed, already out on the 360 or shipping the same time. Hell I don't even buy Blu-ray movies anymore, not worth the money.
