Report: New DS arriving this year

[UPDATE 2] Japanese media says Mario Factory will introduce camera, music playback, and better wireless into next revision of popular portable hardware; Nintendo cries "speculation."

Earlier this year, Nintendo projected hardware sales of its DS handheld system to total 28 million for the current fiscal year. While that can be considered a massively successful year, it is down slightly from the 30 million portable game players the company sold last year. That anticipated slowdown led one industry analyst to predict a new iteration of the DS hardware is on the way, while another had been expecting such a redesign since last November.

Today, Japanese news site Nikkei Net (subscription required) is reporting that the time has finally come for Nintendo to roll out another new DS and that the system will arrive in Japan by the end of the year. Planned features for the unnamed DS revision include a camera function, music playback, and improved wireless capabilities. No mention was made of previously speculated upgrades, such as larger screens, enhanced memory, or a smaller size.

Nikkei expects the redesigned system to carry a price tag of about ¥20,000 ($188), somewhat higher than the ¥16,800 ($158) Nintendo currently charges for the first redesign of its popular portable, the DS Lite. The new system will reportedly arrive on Japanese store shelves by the end of the year.

[UPDATE] Not so fast, says Nintendo of America. In a statement issued to GameSpot, a Nintendo representative labeled Nikkei Net's report as unconfirmed speculation that was not based on any information given out by the Kyoto, Japan-headquartered company.

"The Nikkei newspaper wrote a recent story about a DS solely based upon their own research and speculation, without interviewing Nintendo," said the game company. "While Nintendo is always working on new hardware, we have not made any announcement about a DS and we cannot comment on the Nikkei story."

[UPDATE 2] Thursday morning, Nintendo unveiled the new DSi.

I think it's a waste of time just giving us an update for the DS although fair play to them if it's gonna get them their money. It's getting to that time where I'd rather see Nintendo's new handheld console but at the next level really. When it is shown I have feeling the new one will have a tilt function in it as well as most, if not all of its current features on the DS. Hopefully we'll see that soon.

Well, I should say they must call it "WiiS". and there must be a feature which let the player able to connect it to the Wii and then to the TV by using a WiiWare "play your DS and WiiS games on the go or your TV screen". isn't that a genius idea?

"The DS has had 2 versions, as has the PS2." Not for long. Thing is, we're getting 3 revisions over the span of like what, almost 4 years. Of course Nintendo fanatics won't think twice about blowing off their savings on new revisions cuz hey, its Nintendo.

"ya the ps2 didn't need 3 versions, but my ps2 stopped working, and i had to buy a replacement. i'm sure im not the only one that this happened to. ive bought 2 ds' and 2 ps2, also the xbox broke after i hit it only once, so that makes 2 xboxes" Well I'm pretty certain there are people who've lost their DS's while taking them out in public as well before having to replace them. May not be quite the same as replacing a broken PS2 but you're still replacing a unit.

Well I think that Nintendo should release a new DS very soon as the DS has been around now for quite some time. But for this paper to say a new version will be released this year seems very unlikely as I'm sure Nintendo wouldn't be foolish enough to release a new handheld without a strong marketing campaign

It's laughable how many people don't read the whole article. Nintendo has confirmed nothing and yet nearly every comment here goes on as if they have. If it were to be released by the end of the year, there'd be 3 more months left. Seeing as Nintendo hasn't announced anything, that's very unlikely considering how long it usually takes to release something after announcing it.

I reckon It isn't quite time to release a new DS. People are really getting into them now. If it has better graphics, sound, and most importantly games; I will be happy to buy it.

I think it's time for a brand new DS, not another redesign. I like my DS, really I do, but it's about that time for something new Ninty.

It's too much to get another new DS I think. My Lite is still working fine and I just bought a new one and gave my old one to mum - she got hooked on Brain Training - so I will be quite disappointed if they get another new one out. And anyway why do I need a camera and music play back for my DS?

I really hope this is not true. Camera, music play back? Cmon Nintendo don't follow a portable device that your competing against. I just got a DS Lite and that is the only DS I am ever going to have.

IF it has more meomory'biger screen and a much powerful graphics than the PSP, then it would defenetly be an improment. I don't wanna see a new DS with better lightning and relocated the butons of the System, and then that end up been the improvement that they do. THat's stupid NINTENDO

A biger screen extrat memory and i would think that it is a must that this new DS must be more powerful than the PSP in the graphics deparment as well.

This redesign seems awesome. And $188 doesn't seem too bad. I'm pretty sure Nintendo is trying to copy Sony's PSP though....

maybe ill finally trade in my "old" original DS. The DS lite never had anything that was like "wow i need that." but a camera, music playback, better wifi, thats something almost anyone can get excited about. hope its true!

That would be pretty slick. People would quickly forget about the PSP then. But now that Sony's caught wind of this, they're probaly already planning to counter it.

"The Nikkei newspaper wrote a recent story about a DS solely based upon their own research and speculation, without interviewing Nintendo," said the game company. "While Nintendo is always working on new hardware, we have not made any announcement about a DS and we cannot comment on the Nikkei story." In other words, it's official. When you read enough press releases, the lingo becomes second nature. This is their way of saying "you weren't supposed to find out this soon.. we're going to fire whoever leaked it out."

I'll be happy if it just had better online, music and the camera no need for movies The PSP can keep that I want it to lean more towards a gaming device. A bigger screen and better graphics would keep it moving!

The DS already has the games all it needs is multimedia *but maybe not movies* and it would be awesome! I would love to use it as a camera and listen to music on it but they should leave the movie part for the PSP.

Great. Nintendos taking SOnys attempt * rolls eyes* useless features which usually get filled up by an ipod. I get a system to play games on it, not to take pictures.
