Report: New DS arriving this year

[UPDATE 2] Japanese media says Mario Factory will introduce camera, music playback, and better wireless into next revision of popular portable hardware; Nintendo cries "speculation."

Earlier this year, Nintendo projected hardware sales of its DS handheld system to total 28 million for the current fiscal year. While that can be considered a massively successful year, it is down slightly from the 30 million portable game players the company sold last year. That anticipated slowdown led one industry analyst to predict a new iteration of the DS hardware is on the way, while another had been expecting such a redesign since last November.

Today, Japanese news site Nikkei Net (subscription required) is reporting that the time has finally come for Nintendo to roll out another new DS and that the system will arrive in Japan by the end of the year. Planned features for the unnamed DS revision include a camera function, music playback, and improved wireless capabilities. No mention was made of previously speculated upgrades, such as larger screens, enhanced memory, or a smaller size.

Nikkei expects the redesigned system to carry a price tag of about ¥20,000 ($188), somewhat higher than the ¥16,800 ($158) Nintendo currently charges for the first redesign of its popular portable, the DS Lite. The new system will reportedly arrive on Japanese store shelves by the end of the year.

[UPDATE] Not so fast, says Nintendo of America. In a statement issued to GameSpot, a Nintendo representative labeled Nikkei Net's report as unconfirmed speculation that was not based on any information given out by the Kyoto, Japan-headquartered company.

"The Nikkei newspaper wrote a recent story about a DS solely based upon their own research and speculation, without interviewing Nintendo," said the game company. "While Nintendo is always working on new hardware, we have not made any announcement about a DS and we cannot comment on the Nikkei story."

[UPDATE 2] Thursday morning, Nintendo unveiled the new DSi.

I could see them making a sort of "deluxe" version of the DS, for the consumer who wants MOAR and is willing to pay MOAR. Otherwise, it's quite un-Nintendolike for them to redesign the redesign (so soon anyway). DS Lite is selling like hotcakes, and it doesn't need improving like the original did.

Woo!! That's pretty bad-A$$ Speaking of the DS and redesign. It reminds me that Nintendo had said that the DS was a side project, and not the next Gameboy. So what's happening with the gameboy line of things? Isn't there another one due out soon? That could be what this is, and not a new DS....just a thought....

The only thing that would make this worth buying is if it had some new useful compatibility with the Wii, like importing your Mii onto it to use or something. other then that, I've got a DS Lite, and it's fine w/o a piece of crap camera, or a MIDI sounding music feature. :P

Might actually pick this up, seeing as I don't have a camera. No sarcasm, I'm serious. However, is this actual evidance from Nintendo, or is it just what the analysts are predicting, because these added functions don't sound much like Nintendo.

Hmm... I think we'll just have to wait and see how this one turns out. I'll be darned if this new DS turns into another Game Boy Micro.

Are they saying that the DS Lite wasn't a good enough remake? Sure the camera and music playback sound nice, but wasn't the DS Lite perfect the way it was? Meh...the Game Boy went through similar changes (Pocket-Color-Advance-SP). I guess it's the DS's turn.

I don't see sales really increasing because of this. The DS Lite was a massive improvment over the original DS and was a good reason to upgrade. This just sounds like minor tweaks and features. I think overall that people are happy with their DS Lite.

I think I'll pass. I'm getting a bit tired of the "revisions". The DS has already had one, so this will be the second one. The PSP is about to get its second one, and neither seems to be jusitified. I'm not plunking down another $200 for a system that's virtually the same.

If the adds are a camera and music player, unless it lets you listen to your favorite music while you play the game then I don't see the point in it. Yawn.

retrofraction12: It is a redesign, it will play all of the same DS games, but it's just going to have a few PSP-type multimedia features.

Camera function, music playback, improved wireless capabilities?! The PSP has had those for years! It seems Nintendo is just copying off of Playstation with those ideas. Anyway, I am completley happy with my DS "Phat", and I will not be getting this PSP rip-off.

Why does every company think we need cameras/music players on every electronic gadget we have? I'd rather Nintendo focus their attention to maybe a bigger screen, more WiFi games and enhance the graphics a touch...otherwise the rest is fine...

I miss the days when we would just get a completely new system, instead of just another upgrade :( I'm sure this will be great, but unless it has different games coming out for it, I'm not really sure if I feel motivated enough to get one :?

Nintendo seems to be taking the Apple iPod strategy when it comes to their handhelds. Release a "new", slightly different version of the same old hardware every couple of years so they never have to lower prices, and they can sell the new version to owners of the previous versions who are too gullible to know the difference. No thank you Nintendo. I didn't put up with this crap when you did it with the Gameboy Advance and I'm not putting up with it now. Of course, what do they care? For everyone one person that doesn't fall for this idiotic marketing scheme 10 others will gladly by it just because it's made by Nintendo.

As long as it keeps the GBA port, I'm fine with it. Hell, if it has enhanced Backwards Compatibility to the point I can play even older GameBoy games, I'll actually even get one. Though I'm not counting on that, I still see no need to replace my first-gen Silver DS.

What's up with all the hate comment on the new DS? I mean it's time that Nintendo realeased a new DS version. And i think this new one MIGHT be a little better...Also this really has nothing to do with the PSP-3000. I mean there two totaly different companys. And if your talking about compitition, who cares? Can't we all just have fun? It was a good idea that there gonna include a music playback, i hope the sound is good. My friends always whined about there DS not able to play movies, music, store pics, ect. Anyway, nice going nintendo!(owner of PSP Fat Custom Firmware 3.71)

You knew an upgrade was coming, as it's overdue. I'm still very satisfied with my Lite, though, and won't be buying the new one unless mine breaks. This one could be cool. I'm curious as to what it'll look like.
