Report: New DS arriving this year

[UPDATE 2] Japanese media says Mario Factory will introduce camera, music playback, and better wireless into next revision of popular portable hardware; Nintendo cries "speculation."

Earlier this year, Nintendo projected hardware sales of its DS handheld system to total 28 million for the current fiscal year. While that can be considered a massively successful year, it is down slightly from the 30 million portable game players the company sold last year. That anticipated slowdown led one industry analyst to predict a new iteration of the DS hardware is on the way, while another had been expecting such a redesign since last November.

Today, Japanese news site Nikkei Net (subscription required) is reporting that the time has finally come for Nintendo to roll out another new DS and that the system will arrive in Japan by the end of the year. Planned features for the unnamed DS revision include a camera function, music playback, and improved wireless capabilities. No mention was made of previously speculated upgrades, such as larger screens, enhanced memory, or a smaller size.

Nikkei expects the redesigned system to carry a price tag of about ¥20,000 ($188), somewhat higher than the ¥16,800 ($158) Nintendo currently charges for the first redesign of its popular portable, the DS Lite. The new system will reportedly arrive on Japanese store shelves by the end of the year.

[UPDATE] Not so fast, says Nintendo of America. In a statement issued to GameSpot, a Nintendo representative labeled Nikkei Net's report as unconfirmed speculation that was not based on any information given out by the Kyoto, Japan-headquartered company.

"The Nikkei newspaper wrote a recent story about a DS solely based upon their own research and speculation, without interviewing Nintendo," said the game company. "While Nintendo is always working on new hardware, we have not made any announcement about a DS and we cannot comment on the Nikkei story."

[UPDATE 2] Thursday morning, Nintendo unveiled the new DSi.

Zidaneski: But... doesn't the DS already play FF:CC? I mean if the DS plays it now it will still play it later...

I hope it comes out soon in the US. My DS has been getting a couple cracks on the hinges and other places and I'm not sure how much longer it will last and I don't want to get another DS lite and then a new version comes out a month later.

Depends how it looks and how the buttons are. The main thing I don't like about the DS Lite is that the D-Pad feels "squishy". I prefer the "click" feel of the D-Pad on the older models... I suppose even if it looks the exact same as the DS Lite and the battery life, screens, and stylus were all the same, I'd still be pretty willing to throw down some cash on it if they work on making that D-Pad feel a little more precise. Cool news, can't wait to see more details.

Interesting. I suppose that since Apple is in the handheld game business now, Nintendo needs to watch out for another competitor. Either way, maybe it'll keep me away from playing Monkey Ball on my iPod Touch.

I've got the PSP as a multimedia handheld, I don't want a DS for the same thing. I use it for games.

I'm most excited about the better wireless. The wireless range on the DS and DS Lite is abysmal. At least the improvements here seem to be better than the 3rd PSP. I'll have to wait out both though to see which is more worth my money first.

I think by now we should all be aware that this is what Nintendo does. For whatever reason, we get sucked into another purchase from the big N. I'm not complaining if its an improvement, but thats another way to make more money.

i own both and prefer my psp. once you get used to that analogue nub, psp is one sweet handheld. DS is cool too, but i really only use it for ninja gaiden, mario kart and castlevania. prof. layton is pretty cool, but it's no God of War Chains of Olympus

Well this makes me glad that I never picked one up. I've been using my little brothers for the past few years. I'll definatly get this new design though since I want Chrono Trigger and various other Square RPGS for the system.

i still have the fat ds, if it's budgetly priced i may buy it. Worst case scenario it will make the value of ds lite drop and i'll buy a ds lite.

As the #1 DS fan, I would buy it. However, I don't think this redesign / new DS model isn't needed, and most of the features on it don't really appeal to me. If it comes out though, I'm importin' :)

Music playback? If Nintendo doesn't increase the actual volume at least 3 times, it'd be useless. The actual ds is very low as far as volume is concenered. Most gba games are actually louder.

Smaller, larger screen, and WPA-PSK TKIP support would all be nice features. Not so much the camera feature, but who knows, Nintendo will probably do something interesting with it.

My feelings : completely meh when I look down and see a rarely used DS lite due to my complete lack of funds to buy games for 4 different systems (DS, Wii, 360, and PC)

I dont know whether to suggest consumers stop buying DSes or start buying them. If people stop buying them it's a good reason to produce a redesign, if people continue to buy them the redesign spurs sales. I guess Nintendo and their hardware tweaks are a win-win for them, and typically leave most consumers climbing off of fences, whether it be for or against them.

I am torn on this new release, especially since I happily bought a new DS Lite about a month ago. Blast these constant hardware re-designs!

If they pack it with an Internet browser and USB support (Maybe to run a new Mario Paint game where you could save your art on your PC), I'm in!
