Revealed: Nvidia's Next Flagship Graphics Card, the GTX 980Ti

New GeForce GPU carries 6GB of memory, costs $650.

Nvidia has divulged new details of its GeForce 980Ti, the latest addition to its line of premium-priced graphics cards.

Starting at $650 (and bundled with a copy of Batman: Arkham Knight), the GTX 980Ti carries six gigabytes of GDDR5 memory. That's about half the capacity of Nvidia's $1000 Titan X graphics card, but Nvidia believes the 980Ti can perform to a similar standard at about two-thirds of the price.

A gallery below offers a closer look at the new GPU.

Much like with the Titan X, the 980Ti has a 336GB/s maximum bandwidth. Its display outputs are 1x HDMI, 1x DVI, and 3x DP, while it has two power connectors arranged as 1x 6pin and 1x 8pin.

Meanwhile, the GTX 980, due to its drop down the pecking order, will now be sold at $500.

Nvidia's new GeForce prices follow:

  • Titan X: $1000
  • 980 Ti: $650
  • 980: $500
  • 970: $330
  • 960: $200

Mark Aevermann, a spokesperson for Nvidia, told GameSpot that the GTX 980Ti was built with DirectX 12 features in mind.

"This is, by all rights, our flagship GeForce GTX GPU, built on the GM 200 chip," he said, "and we designed it for a lot of the top-end PC features, such as 4K, VR, and G-Sync. These are the things that this card excels at."

One PC component costs two times as much as a current gen console. That's the kind of thing that makes me laugh when people cry about the graphical output of the current consoles compared to the PC. Not even in the same league/category as far as I'm concerned.

@jinzo9988: Ignorance of console fanboys thinking they know one thing or two about pc makes me laugh. Ill just say that you can build a cheap pc with r9 280 for 470$, which COMPLETLY BLOWS CONSOLES, Hell, a 150 750 ti is equal to a ps4 on performance.

@zeca04@jinzo9988: I have a 980GTX thank you very much. Stop talking out of your ass. $470 is already roughly $120-$170 more expensive than anything you can get from the current gen. I hope that includes the price of an operating system as well... which if it doesn't, congrats, you've added another healthy chunk of money to that overall total (around $100 more give or take). Even if you don't factor in the cost of an OS, it's not comparable. Any way you slice it you're spending significantly more money on a PC.

Furthermore, that's never the argument that people who cry over console hardware take. They always talk about current tech doing 4K and all that other nonsense, and having a system that actually produces that resolution at a playable frame rate with the other settings not being turned down all the way is going to cost you a very pretty penny.

Let's also mention upgrading. Consoles don't have to be upgraded unless you're going from one generation to the other. If you're building a system and trying to compete with a console in price, you're making a sacrifice somewhere that's going to come back and bite you in the rear end in 2 to 3 years, and even if that part(s) is inexpensive to upgrade, you're eventually going to run into the motherboard socket type being discontinued and you'll be forced to upgrade both the motherboard and the CPU in one shot. Not only are PCs more expensive but they're also more expensive over time. Look at the last generation... I mean technically the Xbox 360 is still supported. It's been around for almost 10 years. Please tell me you could've built a PC in 2005 that competed with the Xbox 360 in specs and price and still have it continue to play games that are coming out today (and not indie titles, I'm talking about games like Shadow of Mordor, Titanfall and Far Cry 4).

@jinzo9988: Even though it is true that they are not in the same category, that statement goes both ways - much higher price category also delivers much higher resolution/frame rate gaming. I'd even say that you could also make more comparable categories and build a system that is similarly priced to see how well it runs games (I think GS had a feature on this).

Maybe, in the end, it is not really very comparable, or there is little point in comparing them...

@jinzo9988: One PC component COULD cost twice the amount of a current gen console. A lot of lower end cards already out perform the PS4 and this isn't for average consumers. It's for the enthusiast. The 1K is where we hit "luxury" territory.

@Legend002: Given that you can almost pick up two GTX 970 for the price of one GTX 980 GTX you might still have the better value for money... and maybe you can add a second GTX 970.

@zair: You are right but I need that extra VRAM since I'm going for higher resolution. Support for a single card set up is a lot better than SLI too.

@Legend002@zair: I am playing Witcher 3 on 4K high/ultra no AA with 45fps on a 970 GTX Sli... but I do think that eventually the VRAM will make a difference that is noticeable. Just not sure if the 980Ti is a card where the VRAM will make the big difference. I was surprised how the Titan X was alright at 4K, but not amazing, given that plenty of articles on 4K gaming say that VRAM is a serious bottleneck.

So far, in my experience with my still very recent 970 Sli system, the biggest bottleneck is processing power and Sli scaling issues in some games.

@Legend002@zair: Im running sli 970's at a resolution of 5960x1080 and i have yet to run into any Vram issues or performance problems related to it.

Real world practice does not match up with the supposed problems people talk about

And so far Sli support has been close to 100% supported with zero frame pacing (stutter) issues so far, so saying a lot better is a stretch

@DarkLight748: Not sure why they are 'dumbing things down for console noobs' - GS is not focused on hardware, which has been changing slowly though in the last 6 months. So I'm glad that they are slowly posting news like this, even if details are missing... maybe words of encouragement would be more appropriate?

This is... um... "interesting" news rolling in just as I was about to buy a GTX 980 laptop.

After spending hours and hours and hours of looking at various models, I thought I was close to making up my mind.
BUT, WAIT! NOW THERE'S A POWERFUL NEW GPU OUT!!

Grrrrrrrrhahaha. Dammit.

@Renunciation: This isn't a laptop GPU, this is a desktop GPU. The GPU in the laptop you are looking is most likely a GTX 980M, the mobile version of the 980. I don't think nvidia has ever released a Ti mobile card, so this shouldn't effect your laptop purchase.

@StHapns247@Renunciation: Yeah, I was being a bit melodramatic.

As much as people hate Alienware, I was considering picking up one of their more recent laptops (like the 15 or 17) with the graphics amplifier (eventually), and that's where the 980 Ti would potentially come in.

Haven't quite made up my mind yet, though. ...Mostly because it's Alienware and we're all supposed to hate it and make comments about "lol i maek pc for half price of dat hahaha".

It's been rough looking for the right laptop, though. I want to do digital art with a touchscreen and stylus instead of the old Bamboo tablet I've been using; it's been pretty nice, but drawing on one surface while looking at another to see the image just isn't ideal in any circumstance.

So my laptop has to have a touchscreen. And I'd like to use it for gaming, too -- without it becoming almost completely obsolete in 4-5 years, like the one I am currently using and seeking to replace.

I had no idea that gaming laptops were so anti-touchscreen until lately. :s

(Not into Apple stuff either, so that's a no-go.)

@Tiwill44: I never understood the concern with the 4gb - all the reviews that ultimately looked at the performance of the card used the same 3.5+0.5gb setups. When I decided to buy a 970 GTX Sli setup over a 980 GTX my decision was based on benchmarks, not some spec-sheet.

I am excited to see benchmarks of the GTX 980 Ti to see how is compares with a Titan X and a GTX 980.

@zair@Tiwill44: It will be slightly behind a Titan X at standard clocks but there will be options for factory overclocked models , possibly even overclocked memory . It will be interesting. It will nearly 50% better than a standard 980. The aftermarket coolers from Asus/Gigabyte/EVGA etc will make things very interesting.

This could end up being a bargain card for the top end.

I already have Batman and the season pass organised though so that's a bummer that is the game they give away.
