Sexism isn't keeping women out of industry, says EA exec

Executive vice president Gabrielle Toledano says it's "easy to blame men," but that's not the real problem.

Electronic Arts executive vice president and chief talent officer Gabrielle Toledano has sounded off on sexism in the gaming industry. In an editorial at Forbes, Toledano said when it comes to sexism, there is a "big disconnect between perception and reality," noting it's not men who keep women out of the business.

No Caption Provided

"It’s easy to blame men for not creating an attractive work environment," Toledano said. "But I think that’s a cop-out. If we want more women to work in games, we have to recognize that the problem isn’t sexism."

Toledano said she does not take issues around sexism or harassment lightly. In fact, as the head of human resources at EA, she said she enforces a "very strict code of conduct" and leads regular employee training initiatives to ensure a safe environment for all.

Her biggest issue is that the game industry is perceived as more sexist than other male-dominated workplaces, when in fact this may not be the case. At the same time, she acknowledged EA employs far more men than women, and this is an "issue to fix."

"Rather than blame the majority just because they are the majority, I believe the solution starts with us: women," she said.

Toledano laid out three "dirty little secrets" about women in the game industry, the first of which is that many women play games. "Nearly half of all gamers are female and yet I still continue to hear on a weekly basis that 'the only people playing games are boys in their basements.' It’s just not true. So if you like to play games, wouldn’t it be fun to make them?"

The second "secret" Toledano spoke of is that the industry wants to hire more women. She said a company cannot be successful if a team "looks and acts and thinks the same." She said embracing a more diverse culture is not simply a "feel-good message," but rather it is a requirement to continue making successful games.

The third and final "secret" Toledano said is that there are not enough women to hire, especially in the engineering department, at least not yet. She said to change this, support is needed for educational institutions that encourage women to pursue STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) careers.

"The longevity of our industry and the infusion of new and diverse ideas that appeal to all consumers depend on getting more women into engineering, math, design, and other STEM-related disciplines," she said.

Toledano ended her note acknowledging sexism is a reality of the modern day workforce. However, this should not keep women from entering the industry, she said.

"Sexism is an unfortunate reality of our times, but as women we must seek the power and ability in ourselves to change the dynamic. Cast aside the preconceptions, and look for the opportunities and places to make an impact. And I can tell you firsthand that in the video game industry women are not just welcome, we are necessary and we are equal."

I'm a female gamer here! and yeah, I do believe the female gaming community is larger than you dumbasses below me think. For gods sake, most of the people I talk to about video games seem to be mostly female!

You wanna know why you aren't seeing them? Because they dont play the multiplayers. They don't wanna deal with the assholes in life, I understand that and that's their choice and I'm fine with it. No one should be a complete jerk.

As for me, I frequently play online games. Granted I don't really like the "shit-talking" because the people who do it sound about as intelligent as dirt. And if you think girls dont have "the balls" to play hard, I dominate many of my male friends, like it or not.

And just so you know, I am extremely annoyed and insulted by "facebook games" so if you think that's all chicks like to play; you're greatly mistaken. I've met girls who, like me, enjoy games like Dead Space, Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, Red Dead Redemption, Mass Effect, Bioshock, Farcry, Dark Souls, Assassin's Creed... I could go on forever. My point being, theres no game I'm afraid of regardless of my gender.

And guess what? I'm also hoping to get a job in the gaming industry as a game concept artist. I want my life to be utterly surrounded by videogames.

I'm as devoted as any other man to my games, and no dumb comments or hiring methods will ever take that away from me.

If that's the case then be about it, and if you have a problem with guys thinking the female gaming community is near-nonexistent, then maybe you guys need to come out more? Using 's***-talking and staying away from multiplayers is no longer an excuse because there's no reason for anyone to not reach out and connect with other gamers =/

@lupodirosso It actually sounds like you are more devoted to games than anyone I can imagine, and I know a lot of people who spend more time playing WoW than learning anything useful in CS classes...still the majority of chicks I have ever encountered play the 'lite' games, believe me, I know those that play the mmos and the RPGs...

@tgwolf @lupodirosso It's a work in progress. Yes, most chicks are still warming up to the idea of "vidoegames" but in time everything will calm down and we'll be a larger part of the gaming community. These stupid articles are just stirring up trouble. the problem will fix its self. Us girls just need to gather our courage and go kick some ass. :)

@lupodirosso I feel that things are already calmed down, so much so that this article is a bit late on the topic. Specifically I play using xfire and those chicks I know and play with are members or else can be found in equal numbers on servers for games such as NWN, Torchlight 2 and Titan Quest as an example. My gripe is that there are not more available that play that type or some mmo, at least from xfire, and it seems that the rest end up playing shooters largely or some lite game, both of which are on the lower end of the food chain as games go in my opinion. I suppose I just haven't found the right players...

@lupodirosso Cool down. Here's a tissue wipe your face, don't wanna let people see you crying.

Heard of a mute button? "

If you cant keep cool and take their shit,it does make you weak as a female gamer

"And just so you know, I am extremely annoyed and insulted by "facebook games""

Angry birds and facebook shit doesnt count as games and girls play that alot.

"I've met girls who, like me, enjoy games like Dead Space, Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, Red Dead Redemption, Mass Effect, Bioshock, Farcry, Dark Souls, Assassin's Creed... I could go on forever. My point being, theres no game I'm afraid of regardless of my gender"

@hangman000 "I'm also hoping to get a job in the gaming industry as a game concept artist."

But not a programmer. This is part of the problem the woman in the article speaks about. There are simply not enough women with the skills required to make games. She talks about investing more in getting women into STEM programs, but plenty is being done and the "problem" is actually getting worse.

Why? Seriously, why? I know this is crazy SEXIST, but the cold hard truth is, that more men spend their time coding stuff and studying computer related stuff. That's reality. All this equality bullshit that's taking over the world at the moment is sickening.

@001011000101101 They don't claim psychology has a problem when only 30% of the psychology PhDs are earned by men (2005 statistic). Women are outnumbering men in college in general, but not in computer science fields.

@tgwolf I studied web design and coding a few years back, and while there were a few girls in my class, a lot of them either dropped out or fell far behind. Again, feel free to call me a 'sexist pig' but the cold hard fact is, that men very often does this stuff better than women.

I don't see anything wrong with that. There's lots of things women are really good at too, that men are absolutely terrible at. That's how things work.

This reminds me of Condolezza Rice saying George Bush had done a great deal for black people (I hope I don't need to expand on that). See women, it's all your fault! Don't blame men for sexism.

I think she is counting those games because I don't hear of a lot of females lined up to play the next big action game or sports games. I would guess that females play games that are not like Farmville or Angry Birds would be less than 1% of hard core gamers. It will stay that way until most females stop thinking that games are childish.

@tmorri603 On consoles the situation is very different.

"In late November, president of Nintendo America, Reggie Fils-Aime presented several data points outlining the current gender breakdown of console play in the U.S. Reggie estimates there are 45 million people playing video games as the primary players in the U.S. Of those, Nintendo is estimating 26% are female, or roughly 11.7 million.

Of those, 80% are on the Wii, 11% are on the Xbox 360 and 9% are on the PS3.

  • Wii - 80% = 9.3 million
  • X360 - 11% = 1.29 million
  • PS3 - 9% = 1.05 million
  • Total = 11.7 million Females"

In general, women are not playing on PS3 or Xbox 360.

I find it absolute bullshit that Half the gaming community is female. Seriously?? Are we counting the Facebook games now?? I mean, go to any forum or gaming site, you'll hardly find women. Better yet, lets check the comment section here. Out of 20 comments 1 would be from a female. Go to Facebook page of Gamespot, only 2-3 % of likes/comments from women. So seriously, stop using that stats to tell gaming industry that they need to start catering to women because they make up half the demographic now, cuz they dont.

Also, if sexism in gaming industry is really whats stopping women, why dont we ever see a woman indie developer?? Look at the indie developers, who are mostly self employed people with a passion for video games. Why dont we see a female version of Notch?

@mahavir_singh89 Yes I think, purely on common sense speculation, that this 50% gamers are female is b.s. Unless it's some bogus statistics such as the female concerned plays at least once a year.

If the surveyors asked have you ever played a video game, then sure, I could see the 50% statistic.

@Spokker @mahavir_singh89 @CaesarIIII Well journalists and media outlets that just accept such statistics without giving any kind of consideration or examination to their validity are just plain lazy and do the industry a dis-service.

Why are we discussing something based on statistics which are likely grossly incorrect.

When I took my Animation Degree there were a couple of women in my class who dropped out in the second year and changed their degree to Illustration and Graphic Design. My course did get quite technical and that may have been the reason..who knows ?

But, I think if more Universities had women lecturers for Engineering, Software Development and Animation that may encourage some girls to stick with these subjects in male dominated classrooms. At least they could have met female teachers who have mastered these subjects at Uni.

For the same reason that Gabrielle cites for wanting women in games we should want men discussing feminist issues. It is at its heart a human issue and all perspectives are needed to tackle it properly.

And lets drop the whole "maybe women don't want to be game designers or computer scientists" business; they're just not interested right? First off I don't think that's true but even if it were, why are they not interested in these fields? Surely it would be a trait that's nurtured in them by society. They aren't born with a predisposition to avoid these fields any more then they are born predisposed to like pink and to want to be a princess.

@OllieBrown The proportion of women in computer science has actually declined despite efforts to increase it. Do you think the world is more or less sexist than it was ten years ago? As the opportunities for women have increased, they have chosen not to go into fields such as video games.

@Spokker Is the world more or less sexist than it was ten years ago? This is an excellent question.

Very difficult to answer.

I would say that tolerance and acceptance has continued to increase and improve, as it will continue to do so. We're seeing women in different roles, we're welcoming them in them. Some don't, but they're becoming fewer and fewer.

At the same time, media images of women are increasingly becoming predominantly hyper-sexualised which concerns me, although it presumably doesn't concern women at large (or something would have been done about it).

I think women are still coming to terms with what women are, and what women want, and how they want to play the gender wars, and what the end result wants to be.

When I was growing up, I used to open doors for ladies - no shit. Nowadays they walk into me with their prams, display their cleavage and fat rolls at the mall, and is it just me or are quite a lot of professional women atrociously patronizing and aggressive.

I only hold doors open for my wife and mum now.

@davedrastic @Spokker I must say that is also something I realized. I always used to open doors for ladies, let them step in first or in front of me etc etc and usually I would get a thank you, but these days nothing, but dare not to do it they give you this stare...like how dare you not give way to her, it is my duty to do so. luckily I do not need to do so anymore since my wife said she don't see the need for me to open her door for her or let her walk in first, she don't really care for those stuff. One thing she agrees though is that everything is too sexualised, men and women. Whether it is in movies, ads, games, any form of media and that is why everyone think you have to be skinny of muscular etc etc. to be good looking or whatever

Nice to see some logical thinking on this issue. Any time there's some women's issue you hear a lot of cries of "sexism" without the many other factors being considered. Not only does that not solve this issue, it causes people to take sexism less seriously when it actually occurs.

I hate when people throw around the "40% of gamers are girls!" statistic.

Playing apps like angry birds on your phone and farmville on facebook does not make you a gamer.

Neither does spending a couple of hours playing Halo or CoD, then posting on facebook/twitter talking about how you're "such a nerd lol xD"
