Sleeping Dogs dev says publishers should lower cost of next-gen consoles - Report

United Front senior producer Jeff O'Connell says next-gen hardware should be accessible to "average" consumers.

United Front senior producer Jeff O'Connell has expressed a desire to see next-generation game consoles priced in such a way as to be accessible to both core gamers and the wider mass market.

Sleeping Dogs begin to bite this August.
Sleeping Dogs begin to bite this August.

Speaking to Xbox World, O'Connell, who is currently working on the studio's upcoming action game Sleeping Dogs, said one of his primary concerns about next-generation consoles is the price point.

"For me, it's lowering the cost and making things more accessible for the average consumers," he told the publication.

O'Connell also expressed an interest in watching how Sony and Microsoft's new consoles make AAA titles more immersive for consumers by utilizing more RAM and graphical horsepower, as well as what the future holds for next-generation motion-tracking technology.

Sleeping Dogs--a revival of the cancelled True Crime: Hong Kong--is an open-world action game set in Hong Kong. The game puts players in the boots of Wei Shen, an undercover police officer fighting through the seedy criminal underworld of the sprawling city.

According to Square Enix, Sleeping Dogs will give players a variety of combat options. These include gunplay--which takes place in streets, harbours, and skyscrapers--as well as a hand-to-hand combat system that lets players use martial arts to bring down their enemies.

As for the next generation of systems, Nintendo's Wii U is the only future-generation console to be announced. The system is due for a worldwide release this holiday season.

Three words: NOT GONNA HAPPEN.

Sony and MS have dwindling appetite to take large initial losses on hardware (especially Sony with all the financial troubles they're having). Nintendo does not make a habit of losing money on hardware even at launch.

Sony and MS will price the PS4 and 540 so as to minimize losses. Expect both to be priced at least $400 (for the version with a hard drive which is essential).

I don't think the people who want a cheap console are the ones we need to be concerned about.

How about you listen to what "we" GAMERS want and if the casual gamers want to join in the fun then great, if not they can play their games on the iPhone9.

Wheres Carmack when you need him!?

when i hear lower cost i immediately think cheap hardware inside which leads to ..you guessed it crappy graphics.. so im in the other camp,i say make them as cutting edge as you can regardless of price. The next gen needs a graphical leap equivalent to Ps1 to Dreamcast in order to turn heads. Graphics and that reason alone is what i will base my purchase on.

People aren't going to notice huge graphical differences between a $400 console and a $600 console, and seeing them side-by-side, 9 out of 10 consumers are probably going to end up buying the cheaper box. I have a feeling that Microsoft is going to skew a little cheaper than Sony this time around, and Sony might be hurting because of it.

I'd personally rather have a more capable console...The console is going to last you 10 or so years, or at least should of the product life cycle. No point skimping on that, considering how fast technology ages.

As long as consoles are released during a global economic 'crisis' they will only appeal to 'hardcore' gamers/fans. Casual gamers will be willing to wait for the inevitable price drop and hard/software updates (RROD anyone?!) before parting with what little spare cash they have.

I'm not quite a hardcore gamer but I play to much to be classed as a casual gamer but I know full well I won't be parting with £300-£400 for a next-gen console. If enough people don't buy a new console as soon as it is released then Microsoft/Sony will have to drop the asking price.

I just don't want to spend £400 on a console, just to have a better, slim version come out within a few years at half the price.

@Ayfiaru Neither do I. This gen I'll not make the same mistake. I'll wait a couple of years till its half the price, refurbished, and when its games are cheaper aswell. After all, I dont really mind playing this gen of consoles for years to come.

@JACOBDRAGON666 That's horrible argument. Especially in 2006. The price difference was negligible once you consider the costs of accessories for the 360. With your reasoning, the Wii would have been the best choice of console at the time.

I'm not sure how the commenter expect consoles to lower their price point while at the same time offering more "more RAM and graphical horsepower, as well as what the future holds for next-generation motion-tracking technology."

The console makers know that they need to offer a strong device capable of delivering the graphics consumers and developers expect and I also expect that they know some people will be priced out of the market at launch. I see this as being no different for people that buy new cars at the end of the model year. It's still a brand new car, but not at the premium launch price.

Not sure I agree. The console prices will be high at first, but if the generation lasta 10 years, it will get to the price that it needs to be eventually.

@pqwoei Cheap means more of the people that bought Wii's will buy the console...and the Wii taught us that those people don't buy games. If they want the people that buy games to buy their consoles, they'll need power; otherwise high end titles, and the gamers who actually buy games, will exodus to PC.

@plaintomato What Nintendo did was market to the casual and family gamers. Being inexpensive helped, but it was more about smart marketing. They aggressively went after a demographic that has pretty much been ignored by other console makers. Nintendo has sold 95.8mil Wii's (42.2% market share). You can't argue with those numbers. M$ and Sony are trying like hell to get in on the action, but they seem to be struggling with how to market the Kinect and Move respectively.

lol no. Nintendo sold more consoles yes, but their market share has been declining rapidly over the years. Their console sales may have soared, but their overall game sales pale in comparison to anything the PS3 and Xbox360 have to offer.

You know why casual gamers are mostly ignored? They don't care enough or invest enough to rely on as long term customers, and where is Nintendo now? The Wii is vastly ignored, their casual gamer customer base has withered away and the Wii does not have what it takes to interest the hardcore gamer.

No what the Wii taught us is to get more than just in-house production to make your games, don't rely on a silly gimmick as the selling point of your console and don't allow 90% of the releases to be shovelware.

@TomoEK9 @plaintomato Wii taught us motion controllers need to work like advertised or no one is going to buy the games. The next just motion controlled game I buy is going to come from Blizzard. They are the only one I trust to do it right.

Right on, United Front. But not only for the consumers, the developers as well. Think of all the games that could have been, but never were because development costs were too high.

I think lowering the price of games and embracing the used game market, are the ways to bring in more consumers.

I would love to see consoles become cheaper but I don't agree that is the way to bring in more people.

Don't forget that back in '06 the 60 GB PS3 launched at $599.99! Not sure if we will see something similar, but I wouldn't be surprised if the next-gen consoles launch at around $399.99 or $499.99. Of course Sony and M$ will manufacture a shipping shortage just to create demand which will in turn create the ridiculous secondary market on E-Bay.

Sadly, there's no reason to lower console prices for next gen. I bought the last three consoles when they released, and sold them for more than double what I paid. People are willing to pay ridiculous prices to get their hands on a new console.

The days of consoles costing $250.00 brand new on launch day is over. Even the Wii U is not going to cost less than $300.00. The PS4 and Xbox 3 are going to cost $500.00. Which means slow adoption rates. New tech is always going to cost a lot, Now that the consoles are now do everything machines. Which costs money which not many people have in a bad economy. Sony and MS even Nintendo just have to weather the storm.

He's right.... Games are still almost double the price they used to be in my country. It seems this generation of games don't seem to lower even though alot of time passed since their arrival. I know that developings cost also increased for this generation but that should've gone lower by now...what the heck is going on?

They need to make new games cheaper...

If new games were $40 it wouldn't be near as bad. I (and many others, I'm sure) would probably never buy a used game again. The developers would probably make more money that way too, considering they get $0 from used games sales.

100 sold x $40 > 50 sold x $60...

@TriumphantToad You have to look at profits, which is what the developers are looking at. With development costs, let say they break it down that it cost $30 to make each game. They're not going to charge $30, they'll inflate that price to make a profit. Let's use your example. So let's say they charge $40, that's only a $10 profit. $10 x 100 = $1,000 profit. Now if they charge $60, that's $30 profit. $30 x 50 = $1,500 profit. They make more money charging $60 than they do charging $40.

Boy, at the rate consoles are going they are going to cost the same as a low end PC...oh, they already are! Maybe the gaming industry should realize before they start charging $500+ for a console, that the PC is a much better platform for gaming.

I dont like paying $60 for a game either but I remember buying final fantasy( not 13 but 1) for $50 when it came out. Most NES games were atleast $40 back in the 80's when I was a kid. Payed $50 for mechwarrior 2 and diablo 2(little more recent) and now there $50-$60.

@bats94 I agree with both statements. While we can all wish the PS4 or next X box will not be over half a grand, the real problem with gaming is the games and their prices. The used game market is as large as it is because a lot of gamers and their parents don't want and/or can't drop 60+ greenbacks for one game that they will have to then turn around and pay more to unlock all of its content. Its simple math really. I waited 5 years to get a PS3 and have spend around 100 bucks for 5 great games. If I had not waited I would have spent 300 for those games, not to mention almost double for the system than what I paid.

Not gonna happen, sadly. Increase console prices-people will still buy them.

Maybe game prices should be lowered instead.
