Sleeping Dogs dev says publishers should lower cost of next-gen consoles - Report

United Front senior producer Jeff O'Connell says next-gen hardware should be accessible to "average" consumers.

United Front senior producer Jeff O'Connell has expressed a desire to see next-generation game consoles priced in such a way as to be accessible to both core gamers and the wider mass market.

Sleeping Dogs begin to bite this August.
Sleeping Dogs begin to bite this August.

Speaking to Xbox World, O'Connell, who is currently working on the studio's upcoming action game Sleeping Dogs, said one of his primary concerns about next-generation consoles is the price point.

"For me, it's lowering the cost and making things more accessible for the average consumers," he told the publication.

O'Connell also expressed an interest in watching how Sony and Microsoft's new consoles make AAA titles more immersive for consumers by utilizing more RAM and graphical horsepower, as well as what the future holds for next-generation motion-tracking technology.

Sleeping Dogs--a revival of the cancelled True Crime: Hong Kong--is an open-world action game set in Hong Kong. The game puts players in the boots of Wei Shen, an undercover police officer fighting through the seedy criminal underworld of the sprawling city.

According to Square Enix, Sleeping Dogs will give players a variety of combat options. These include gunplay--which takes place in streets, harbours, and skyscrapers--as well as a hand-to-hand combat system that lets players use martial arts to bring down their enemies.

As for the next generation of systems, Nintendo's Wii U is the only future-generation console to be announced. The system is due for a worldwide release this holiday season.

I think lowering the price of AAA titles would actually be better than lowering the price of consoles. I mean bringing down the cost of consoles would be helpful, but I'm sure MS and Sony would skimp on the specs, and the games would suffer. I'd like them to find the sweet spot between reasonably priced games, and a reasonably priced console to play them on.

@yavix Don't buy games day one, problem solved (until people stop buying games day one it wouldn't happen). 'cost of next-gen consoles' does not refer to cost of games tho

@nanorazor But I like buying games day one. If you wanna wait a month (rare case) or 5 months to play your games that's your call. Is not fun hearing everyone talk about a game you were interested in playing but couldn't afford it.

@ExplicitMike @nanorazor I've trained myself mentally to resist buying day one. (even tho it's lame not being in on the band-wagon day one

The number of games in my library would suffer drastically if i bought day one.

True for many people. The price of games has gone up every generation.

@yavix I agree. You buy consoles one time unless problems like RROD or YLOD. Games you will continue purchasing for a while. People often forget that buying games at $60 could add up to hundreds to thousands in the years to come.

The next gen games should be lowered to $40 too. Maybe people would try something other than CoD and Mario if they could afford it.

Game pricing need to be brought under control too.Since current developing costs are huge, that means all "AAA" games cost $60,no matter the amount of content they offer.Next Gen should change that, and give us better pricing,if you put a $60 price tag on a 5-6 hour long game with no replay value,it will flop at sales, with huge used sales and piracy rate...

@Rocker6 I been ranting this over and over. $60 is too much for almost any game. Why? Because too many games are coming out now and days. That's not a bad thing however, this means people have to carefully chose what's worth it. That's not good for developers that make a great game only to have mediocre sales to show for it. A perfect example I can use is Deadly Premonition. It sold well enough because it was price at $20. Had that game been $60 people would not even given it a chance. As for the last Part is not necessarily true. I got friends that buy anything and don't care how short it is. As long as the game holds their attention.

With the Wii U, I think Nintendo is pretty much just double dipping into this generation, but their pricing is going to let us know the ballpark of Sony and MS's next systems prices. $300 is the new sweet spot for consoles, so let's make it $400 tops. I'm thinking $329.

I agree with that, also,I would like for Next Gen consoles to not be too powerful,so that development costs would stabilize. We need to see a rise in middle tier development, which is gone now due to huge development costs and fees. You're either a huge corporation like EA,or an indie developer. That's wrong,we need more competition and innovation in the industry...

If next Gen consoles give us a huge jump in power, that would ultimately end very bad for the consumer, since only big name developers like EA,Activision, etc, would remain in the industry, constantly playing it safe with no risks and new ideas, while imposing restricitve DRM measures on their games. We need one Gen to stabilize the industry and development costs, gaming is stagnating, but aged and weak console hardware is just a part of the reason why is that happening...

When a next Gen console comes out, I'm usually ready for it, I do find that I am an "Average" Consumer. I save for many...many...many...months before release so I can get the one I choose.

unreal said their new engine will lower the cost and reduce the time for making a game. So when the new consoles come out I want 45$ games. And COD will have an excuse for being six months release than 1 year now.

@Savoritias i also heard this, seems to be the single most exciting piece of news regarding next gen :D ..well for me anyways. cheaper development could make it easier to get funding for new IP's, maybe experimenting with different game mechanics devs normally wouldnt take risks for..and like you said, could even make AAA titles cheaper.

And what about devices like android and apple's tablets?

What about them being more powerful than current gen, and costing 599$/euro?

People are willing to pay an appropriate cost now.

It was not the case with the PS3, but things have changed.

Right now, I am playing games on my android tablette (with tegra 3) using my wired x360 controller and sometimes even connecting my mouse to it. And it works great.

I will not be willing to purchase a console if they are less powerful than the tablets of the same year. And tablets get a boost every year, unlike consoles which are probably killing themselves by being update every 7 or 8 years.

So please. Sony and microsoft make sure gou give them decent hardware

@Slash_out This is undeniable, but the games on tabs just don't excite me. Most ps3 and 360 games don't either though.

"accessible to "average" consumers." whatever!!! what about 60$ games that you can finish in 5 hours!

They need dynamic pricing plans! The xbox costs what 200$ now. the wii 100$ the ps3 is 200 also?

That is 3 games!!! or 2 in the case of the wii!

"accessible to "average" consumers." what does that even mean? a world filled with EVEN more COD and Gitar Hero games?

I thought COD and the Wii was for the average consumer.

well if the industry does this. I want a MORE expensive console for HARDCORE consumers. Maybe some of us. A lot of us dont want a watered down dumbeddumb industry. oh wait thats already whats happening.

I like PC gaming and Console gaming. BUT there is a lot BS talk about what might happen with consoles. I play more console than PC but that may change if they dumb EVERYTHING down to the Wii and COD level of gaming.

@illegalChronic i hear ya , D3 alone sucked badly cause of being forced to be online just to play single player , but looks like most games are going that route now , now just the systems =\

Square Enix will not be the only very concerned developers. How many developers have fallen over this generation? And now the developers have to create even bigger and better games than before meaning bigger and bigger investments.

And how many triple A games / franchises have financially succeeded? Not that many. Look at Assasins Creed, that's done well but has had massive resources poured into it and if it had of failed Ubisoft would have been on its knees, and the specific developers likely closed.

I've read that Crysis 2 lost money, and that was a pretty huge game, what chances does the like of The Darkness II have when it's retail value plummets 50% within 2 months of release. Apparently Dead Space lost money first time round, Mirrors Edge failed despite being a solid and innovative experience.

And in the meantime the market place gets more and more complex, especially given the prominence of Apple, Android and the proliferance of cheap to play games.

So much competition = a much lower chance of success than previous generations.

Nintendo 3DS and PS Vita-just like the Wii U-are next-gen consoles. Once MIcrosoft and Sony release successors for their current consoles, then we can start calling them current-gen. ;)
