Sleeping Dogs dev says publishers should lower cost of next-gen consoles - Report

United Front senior producer Jeff O'Connell says next-gen hardware should be accessible to "average" consumers.

United Front senior producer Jeff O'Connell has expressed a desire to see next-generation game consoles priced in such a way as to be accessible to both core gamers and the wider mass market.

Sleeping Dogs begin to bite this August.
Sleeping Dogs begin to bite this August.

Speaking to Xbox World, O'Connell, who is currently working on the studio's upcoming action game Sleeping Dogs, said one of his primary concerns about next-generation consoles is the price point.

"For me, it's lowering the cost and making things more accessible for the average consumers," he told the publication.

O'Connell also expressed an interest in watching how Sony and Microsoft's new consoles make AAA titles more immersive for consumers by utilizing more RAM and graphical horsepower, as well as what the future holds for next-generation motion-tracking technology.

Sleeping Dogs--a revival of the cancelled True Crime: Hong Kong--is an open-world action game set in Hong Kong. The game puts players in the boots of Wei Shen, an undercover police officer fighting through the seedy criminal underworld of the sprawling city.

According to Square Enix, Sleeping Dogs will give players a variety of combat options. These include gunplay--which takes place in streets, harbours, and skyscrapers--as well as a hand-to-hand combat system that lets players use martial arts to bring down their enemies.

As for the next generation of systems, Nintendo's Wii U is the only future-generation console to be announced. The system is due for a worldwide release this holiday season.

i kinda disagree with this. next-gen consoles needs to push gaming to a new level.

PC is already 2 generations a head. why wouldn't they want to do the same thing for the next-gen consoles.

@DeadPhoenix86

Actually that is not true.

According to information provided so far, the Xbox will be 1 generation behind (Radeon HD 6600) and the PS4 will be in the current generation (HD 7600).

And it's only safe to assume that both will have a quad-core CPU, which is a standard in current gaming rigs.

Of course anything can change until release date, but I think this is the most plausible scenario given the price range of consoles (300-400$).

@djmiranda15 I have an 8 core in one of my rigs and a 6 in the other, I kinda consider that to be standard anymore.

That's delving more into the Extreme side of gaming.

I'm rocking a quad myself and i have no complaints while gaming.

The only time I start to despair is when rendering in 3D modeling apps.

2 generations is being modest, and 2 months after the next gen consoles finally come PC will be running circles around them again.

@Magician679 2 months... PC elitist really need to get a grip... If you're talking about the very small minority of PC gamers who have the absolute latest and great of everything, spending thousands of dollars for their machine... maybe. Truth is, most PC gamers don't have rigs to compete with new consoles when they come out.

@Magician679 Hmm lots of typos in my last reply, but you get the idea... Until Sony and MS officially announce the new consoles, any information we get is pure speculation. I highly doubt they wouldn't want to come out of the gate swinging with their new systems.

@SkamArtist @Magician679 PS3 is around 6 years old though, so try to built your current rig when the PS3 first came out... or like the Mag said, 2 months after it came out. It would be nearly as cost effective as it is now, or 2 years ago.

from what I am reading the next gen consoles are already set to have hardware that is already not new . You can go on newegg.com right now and buy a kit for a gaming pc for less then $500 with a good video card, throw in a monitor and a mouse/keyboard and you got a gaming PC for $700, tops. Thats less then the ps3 was at release. go price it out if you dont believe me.

@M3o5nster @Magician679 I disagree, I built my rig for under $800.00 back in 2010 and it is still by far superior to my PS3. BF3, GTA IV, Deus Ex, and Dead Space 2 look exquisite on my PC. Now I can't say how my rig will compare to the next gen consoles, but I can't imagine it being that big of a difference....keeping in mind that I currently have 2 year old technology in my rig.

@ulgk that's around the same price we pay for the current generations. next-gen consoles should push there hardware a little further. so it can last another 7 years or longer. selling there next-gen consoles for a lower price, means a shorter life span on the overall performance of the system.

@DeadPhoenix86 I built a pc and absolutely love it ever since. A next-gen console should never cost the same amount of a laptop, lets say around $500. At that point, no one would buy a console. A reasonable amount would be $350-$250. And games also needs to to have a lower price.

Well i am from the country with much lower average wages than USA or Australia has, and consoles of itself are not a problem and was not even when current gens came out. But the games could go down a little, at least to a point of a average PC game.

@honestabe6659 Well I do not know how in your country and direct price point comparison does not work well as the prices does not fit, but in mine even new PC games have about 30% lower price point than new console games, specificaly new console game cost about 1500-1600 crowns in genral, new pc games about 1000. In dollars, it would be about 80 for a console game and 50 for PC, but as I said, converting prices does not really fit - the same game usually cost less in USA or even rest of the EU.

Nearly 30 years or so into gaming on PCs, that makes it a pretty enduring fad . And the guys who started playing the earliest CRPGs who are in their 40s-50s and are still advocates of pc gaming, now erm....hardly hipsters really are they? c'mon you must try harder.

I'm fine with a one time investment of $500-$600 for a new console at launch. Just lower the price of games, I think everyone spends more money on games during the 7-10 year console generation than on the initial console purchase. I think $40 for next gen games would be amazing.

Why is it, every damn time I read an article on this site anymore there's one of these new aged hipsters commenting about how Console needs to die and PC needs to be revived? I hate pc gaming always have always will and bleh bleh I know they have better features for mods etc, but no. I enjoy console gaming and Im still not that big of a hater on PC Gaming. Do what you want, but I'm really sick of hipsters and their PC fads now a days.

@TheSnowmanSaint It's just that they're so elitist about, you're entitled to an pinion.

the truth is gaming industry follows home entertainment systems NOT the pc, so their elitism is unjustified, since consoles are like the parents and the PC is the unruly child of the family with big piracy rates.

and it is usualy the consoles that inovate on new systems of controllers..

the pc IS NOT two generations ahead simply because it's not profitable to make high profile PC exclusives and utilize it.

A 1000 $ will barely get you any father technlogicaly than a 300 $ PS

that is the truth

@Dragdar Whoa, dude. Right about this time you just need slightly more money (around $500) for PC that could exceed consoles, and i count the monitors price.

Though I prefer consoles for the sake of convenience, co-op gaming and exclusives, I got to admit that PC tech and gaming performance were already far ahead.

That's not the truth.... clearly

how is pc the child.... PC games have been around ssense the 50's while the first console was released in 72... you clearly don't know what your talking about. also $1000 pc is "barely" better then ps3 ok lets look at my pc for comparison.

PS3

Processor 3.2 single core

system ram: 256 mb

video ram: 256mb and 550mh

My Pc

ProssesProcessor: 3.4(3.8 OC) 4 core hypertheading so 8 cores...

system ram: 8gb I have 32x more system ram....

video ram: 3gb and at around 1000mh <--- and thats a shitty stock card.

so obviously it's not slightly higher tech...

@eoin That's just it, isn't it? People aren't paying as much as they used to. We've had a few years of sales shrinking, actually, and I think it's largely because of all the nickel and dime ripoffs the publishers like Activision and console makers like Microsoft are pulling.

I think this next gen is make or break because sooner or later there's not going to be any more blood to suck out of the core gamers.

for me its Yes over priced, will I still pay No.

Gaming Lost alot of its charm, this Gen, and makes me want next Gen even less, themore and more I hear about another Online Pass,Offline Pass, DLC, Locked disc DLC or whatever BS they come up with.

Most the games this Gen are for graphic whores, with little to no Replay-Value so thats's I doubt I'll buy next Gen. PS3 is my last Console. theres plenty PS2, PS1 & PS3 on my backlog that will Last me a Lifetime.

Im not too bothered about the price of consoles. Relative to the time spent on them, they are well worth the investment. But I would prefer top end, more reliable hardware so that games do not look dated after only 3 years. Price of games is the issue.

The thing is here , I don't believe in more features ! I as a couple of my friends, and I am not talking youngsters had problems with the ps3 , I sent mine in for repair after 2 years only having about 800 hours of play and it cost $149 to fix it , sony never told me what was wrong ? these guys seem to be "naughty dogs" which in fact the best dog is "the sleeping dogs" , between consoles and games there is way more than enough money to go around ! BRING BACK A BETTER PS3 at a Lower price and of course everyone would like the prices of games lowered !

All the paid DLC flooding the industry these days has made me much more selective about the games I buy for full price. I don't buy games when they come out unless I'm really looking forward to them. In the past year I've only purchased Skyward Sword, Tales of Graces F, and Xenoblade before a price drop. I'm still waiting on Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Mass Effect 3 to drop a bit more... especially with all the DLC they have (and are promising).

Prices of games need to come down. $60 is too much plus DLC on the way, Day one DLC, On disc DLC. Come on! look how many games are coming out. You think developers are gonna like hearing the words " I might have to rent that because I am already buying another game"

Ha! I got a chuckle out of this report! I mean, of course he would say this. Its funny when people are so transparent. More consoles sold means a bigger market of customers for developers that create games for those consoles.

To summarise what he said, "Me like da money".

He is talking about hardware in general. Reading the comments tho I think we can all agree that game prices need to come down. Too many games come out and we have too little money for them all. I don't like studios closing down but pricing is a big part of the problem. People play it safe for a reason. No one likes wasting money. Not everybody is rich. Sorry I'll stop preaching.

ABSOLUTELY agreed, the price of games need to go down

I feel like the tactic is to slap 60$ on a game then hope as many people buy it as possible, then start lowering as months go by

and take a double dip into the market which can't shell out 60$ day one.
