Update: Sony's escalation team has decided to pay a full refund, in this case. It is unclear whether the company will make any broader changes to its refund policies.

Original Story Follows

Questions have been raised over the standard of Sony's customer services after it was discovered that the victim of a PlayStation 4 hack would not be fully refunded the $600 that was stolen from him.

"The Sony representative told me that they are only permitted to refund up to $150"

Reddit user Kadjar

A Reddit user, going by the name Kadjar, explained that he awoke on Wednesday morning with a series of email alerts stating that about $600 of content had been purchased through his account. He also discovered that his PlayStation 4 has been deactivated from PSN and another system, of which the location is unknown, has seized control as the primary system on the account.

Having spoken to Sony customer services on several occasions throughout the day, his criticisms of its response was summarized accordingly:

  • Sony will only refund $150 of the $600 that was taken.
  • The money will be in PSN credit, and not refunded into the bank.
  • If the user escalates the payment dispute with his bank, his account will be banned.
  • If his account is banned, his purchased licences for games, such as The Last of Us Remastered, will be wiped.
  • If the licences are wiped, there is no way of restoring them.

The user's PlayStation 4 cannot be designated as the primary console for another 6 months, meaning it is locked out of the account until then.

If a PlayStation 4 loses its place as the primary console, users must wait six months to reverse the policy.
If a PlayStation 4 loses its place as the primary console, users must wait six months to reverse the policy.

Readers on Reddit have voiced outrage at what they consider poor protection from account hacks. Others have urged that this story highlights how important it is that users protect their account with a very strong password, due to the lack of protection should something go wrong.

GameSpot has contacted Sony to discuss the matter or provide some clarification.

Kadjar has published images of his online chat with Sony customer services, and highlights three other cases where users have complained about similar issues.

His post reads:

"This morning, I started receiving emails indicating a number of purchases on my PSN account. As the transactions came in, one-by-one, it became immediately clear that my account had been hacked. I immediately logged into PSN and removed my card from the account, changed my email and password, and simultaneously launched support chats with both Sony and my bank.

"The Sony representative told me that they are only permitted to refund transactions of up to $150. He also informed me that I could dispute the charges with my bank, but by doing so, my account would be banned from PSN. As a result, I would permanently lose all of my purchases, including the Last of Us Remastered.

"He also informed me that my existing PS4 had been deactivated from the network this morning, and that a new one had been activated. When I asked him to deactivate that new, mystery PS4, he said he could not. I then turned on my PS4, logged in with my new credentials, and attempted to activate my PS4 with my account, but it informed me that I could not activate it as long as there was another PS4 bound to my account.

"I called customer support, hoping for some clarification. The agent informed me that there is indeed a refund investigation underway, but that it will be limited to $150, and that it would be credited to my PSN wallet, not my bank account.

"Furthermore, my account will not be able to activate a new system for 6 months, per Sony policy. I'm completely locked out of my own account until that date. I then asked about what would happen if I got my bank to reverse the charges, and he informed me that it would result in a banned account. I asked if there would be any way to restore my purchases, and he told me that there would not be, but I 'only have the Last of Us and a couple of the monthly free deal games,' so it's not a big deal."

Several Reddit users have offered Kadjar copies of their games, which he has thanked them for, but declined.

"My goal here is bring attention to a few of Sony's bad customer service policies in the hopes that they'll change them," he said.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> You really haven't tried Steam support if that's what you think. Xbox Support has pretty much flawless for the most part, PSN support isn't as bad as this article claims - but it is very shoddy when it comes to refunds/hacking. But Steam is the absolute worst. Valve admit that Steam support is a voluntary thing for staff. They're not dedicated support technicians, they're just regular staff members trying to help out. Badly.

Ha! So the hacker has control of his account for another 6 months? I would hope not but it's unbelievable that he can't get into his own account after someone stealing it. It stinks even more that he would lose the digital game(s) he purchased if he reported his account stolen to his bank.

A lot of things to note in this awfully accusatory article:

1) 150 is the max amount allowed in a PSN wallet. A customer service rep is just that, a representative. They do not have the power nor the authority to restore a whopping $600 to an account if the matter has not been investigated.

2) Sony does not owe him anything. It was not their fault he lost access to his account. This is a measure taken by EVERY company and organization; they conduct an investigation of the incident and only then will they reimburse in full. Too many factors must be taken into consideration for them to bow down to his ignorant demands of full on-the-spot refunds. Even banks do not function this way.

3) Threatening to take this up to the bank was a stupid move, and strong-arming a corporation like Sony is not a good way to make up for your own stupidity. On top of that, the bank would tell you to deal with Sony since the breach was not on their side. Very dumb move.

4) The customer service policies are in place to ensure both Sony and the user can get as much help as they need. For the reasons stated above, there is not more that can be done. Expecting Sony to just flip a switch and undo this idiot's mistakes is completely ignorant.

This is why you should have DRM free games. The games you purchased are yours in your hard disk.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> By proper you mean perfect. I have a news flash for you: That's not possible.

I have another fun fact for you: not all games are multiplayer.

Nowhere did I complain about a half ass port. If a game has a shitty port, I simply don't buy it. I don't buy any game even within the first month of it coming out. I wait to see how badly bug-riddled it is, if it's going to use exploitative practices (DLC), and if the game is generally good. If it doesn't meet those criteria, they don't get my money.

You're never going to stop piracy in the same way you're never going to stop people from wanting to do illegal activity. DRM is basically stating that you, the owner of a purchased product, do not actually own the product. You're simply renting it until they decide otherwise. There's a whole generation of gamers that won't be on board with this whatsoever. If a game has DRM, I don't buy or play it. I don't support corruption on either side.

When PS5 and the next Xbox is release, that's when true DRM comes into play so say by by to discs and PS4/Xbox One are the last consoles to use discs.

This is typical for console companies such as Sony and Microsoft. Why don't you be independent and buy yourself a nice rig? I used to deal with Microsoft's BS until I finally got tired of it and bought myself a computer... I've saved so much money it's unbelievable.

<< LINK REMOVED >> this couldn't be more wrong in terms of Microsoft, they will quickly hand you your account back if you can prove it's yours which is pretty easy to do if it is indeed your account nor will they ban your account if you report fraud on your account so I'm not sure where you information is coming from. As for PC I don't believe you have ever dealt with Steam support they are atrocious and if someone stole your Steam account your pretty SoL on this situation much like the person is hear with PSN. PC gaming is amazing for saving money cause of constant Steam sales of old games but don't act like Steam is any better at handling these things.

My friend's account was hacked and yes it took a week or two for Steam to fix the issue, but it was all taken care of perfectly. Stop pretending Steam is the only place to buy games anyway, and no I'm not talking about Uplay and Origin.

However when it comes to me and my friends experiences, Steam has pulled through for us every time... the only complaint is that it takes a ridiculous amount of time for a ticket response. I also agree that Origin has way better customer support. Steam needs to get its act together in that department. I haven't purchased anything through either Steam or Origin since discovering G2A.com though. Uplay is pretty much a joke.

I just read the whole transcript.

Sounds like the customer service rep dont have the authority to give back more than $150, thats why he said they will investigate it. But the guy asked to have the full refund right away.

Customer service rep then gave instructions for the guy to go to his PS4, and do some stuffs to see if its really deactivated from his PS4 or not, but guy said he was at work, so he was given a code for the support to be done later when the guy can access his PS4. Meaning the issue isnt totally done, dont know why he published this right away to the public.

Maybe. I dont mind if he post it, its good for the gamers to know stuffs like this, but as I said, the issue isnt resolved yet. Its not as if Sony hang up on him, or didnt offer help, its him who said he cant access his PS4 for the mean time to have it further investigated... He just went and published the chat online.

$150 is the max they could offer because that's the max allowed in a PSN Wallet. If you read the conversation closely you can see that an investigation is being launched and if the charges are proven to be fraudulent, the total charges will be returned to his card. The information wasn't provided very clearly by the CS rep, but it was provided none the less. It's a simple misunderstanding.

In the chat that he screen grabbed, the cs rep mentioned refunding the total purchase amount to his card if the investigation find that the charges were indeed fraudulent. That's all I'm basing this off of, the screen grabbed chat, not his phone conversation as that's purely he said she said.

ugh, he's stuck, he can't sue for just $600 and Sony knows it.

I hate the future of gaming. I preferred the older days of single player gaming. I own a PS4 but regret it. I should have stuck with Nintendo, their library is smaller, but everything is quality and IT WORKS, and their customers don't have to put up with this nonsense.
