Super Street Fighter IV confirmed for spring

Stand-alone follow-up for Capcom fighter to feature "about eight" new and returning characters, more ultra combos, enhanced online play.

Street Fighter IV is ready for round two. When Capcom's flagship fighting franchise returned from relative dormancy earlier this year, it was critically lauded for faithfully recapturing much of what made its predecessors great. Capcom today announced it will be keeping to another of the series' traditions, the stand-alone revamp.

T. Hawk spikes El Fuerte's head like a football.
T. Hawk spikes El Fuerte's head like a football.

Where Street Fighter II had its Champion Edition and Street Fighter III received its 2nd Impact, Street Fighter IV will be succeeded by Super Street Fighter IV in spring of 2010. Capcom told GameSpot the stand-alone game will arrive on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 with a handful of additions, including "about eight" returning or newly created characters, new ultra combos for the original Street Fighter IV cast, enhanced online play, balancing tweaks, and more.

Capcom also revealed two of the additions to the roster, T. Hawk and Juri. T. Hawk debuted in the arcades with Super Street Fighter II and is one of only two characters in that game (Dee Jay being the other) not already included in the console and PC versions of Street Fighter IV.

Juri is about to give M. Bison (Vega in Japan) a good old-fashioned boot to the head.
Juri is about to give M. Bison (Vega in Japan) a good old-fashioned boot to the head.

The other confirmed character, Juri, will be the first Korean world warrior in the series, and uses an array of tae kwon do kicks to batter opponents into unconsciousness.

As a stand-alone game, Super Street Fighter IV won't be compatible online with its predecessor. However, Capcom has said that the game won't be a full-priced game, and the publisher plans to offer a special bonus to gamers who already own Street Fighter IV.

@infinitymugen They are suppose to be including GGPO in the game which makes them redo parts of the game engine so an update would of been to much of a pain and plus it doesn't let the people without online buy the game. Also at probably a $29.99 price tag this version will be a steal for those who didn't get SFIV... Also the rumor is that Seth and Gouken wont be in this version so it makes sense for just a whole new game with new menus and online and character moves and bonus stages and levels. This is more for the hardcore fan and not the casual players, this is what we wanted...

Cool, as a semi-serious competitive player in SF4 I'm really excited about this update. The expansion pack price point is nice too.

I never bought the original SFIV (I did rent it though and like someone else said, I found it awkward). However, this better version for a reduced price sounds like a winner. Those who bought the original...yeah it sucks, but this is what Capcom always does. Street Fighter II Turbo Hyper Fighting, Super SF II...Alpha/Zero 1, 2, 3...SFEX 1, 2, 3, SF III, 2nd Impact, 3rd Strike...why are you so surprised?

I am stoked about this game because finally they are bringing T Hawk back into the fold of the Street Fighter Series. I wish they would have included him in the SF4 but I guess I will just was until SSF4 hits the shelves this coming spring. Also cant wait to see some of the other new characters they are including. Here is to T Hawk the only character in SF history with as much power of more than Zangief.

lol yeah. SFII, SFII Championship Edt. , SFII Turbo, Super Street Fighter II. So the question is, since I didn't buy the original, should I buy this new version or wait for the 3rd or 4th version? How about a new Capcom vs SNK? Actually since I own a Neo-geo MVS, I don't really need more fighters, but I would like to get at least one version of SFIV. I think i'll wait a little while longer. Now if the new content is downloadable, I'll buy the original right now.

Cool, new special everything will be nice, if they can reduce the lag and all other problems then we'll be cool and we are promised not full price hopefully it'll be like $30-$40 and it'll definitely be buyable P.S. I like the look of Juri, I'm hoping the moveset is as good as she looks lol

@gameweasl Seems like I touched a nerve there. Sure Capcom gives us exactly what we want like the overpriced costume expansion pack that was already on the disk to begin with. This is can easily be an add on to the existing SFIV.

@infinitymugen Your wrong, they are giving us what we wanted and charging an update price. Plus they are going to reward SFIV users who still have the game. Its not like Madden which release the same game every year, do you realize we went 10 years with out a new game? Now we get two in a span of a year...

"Super" labeling in Japan is like "Xtreme" here in the USA...overdone and cheesy haha but it's great. Glad I was holding off of St. Fighter 4, now time to use Super RightGuard Extreme deoderant!!

I think it is the best idea because you won't want to upset the gameplay of the original but what annoys me is why Capcom announced Championship Mode a few months after release. I am up for this follow up with new ultra combos and an enhanced online which I hope its set up is like HD Remix with online lobbies.

Yeah okay so everyones moaning because Capcoms doing an update but the same people saying this are the ones that buy the yearly updates of Madden and NHL....hell even Tekken and Soul Calibur only add one or two characters at a time. I for one will buy the new one and i dare say ill enjoy playing as the new characters, is that Juri from Street Fighter zero (alpha) 3 with her memory wiped? She used to be a Cammy clone...

What a load, so capcom thinks we are stupid enough to believe that they could not easily put it as DLC? Or capcom thinks that we re still in the 90's? if so Am right on the second one I think gonna wait for Super Street Fighter IV Super Mega Ultra Tournament Championship Gold Combo Edition EX Third Strike Fight For the Future.

So essentially, same game, same characters, a few new ones, and probably around $40? Even for $20, I think that's a bit steep.

Man you fight game fanatics like spending your money in one place. Buying the same game 2 and 3 times to compliment your $150 dollar joystick with a picture of Ryu on it. To each his own I guess. I loved fighting games back in the early 90's but now I can't devote all my time to mastering one game and being dominant at it online. I have to play MK2 against my friends at home cuz every kid and his cousin knows Katana inside and out. I forgot her finisher 15 years ago or more for crying out loud.
