Syndicate revamp coming in early 2012

Electronic Arts bringing classic PC action-strategy series back as a shooter for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC; Darkness studio Starbreeze developing.

The rumors were true. Electronic Arts today confirmed that it is bringing back the Syndicate franchise with The Darkness and Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay developer Starbreeze Studios at the helm.

Why bother with a marketing campaign when you have a Persuadertron?
Why bother with a marketing campaign when you have a Persuadertron?

Set for release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC early next year, EA's newest Syndicate will not be the same top-down action-strategy blend that gamers may remember from the two original PC games, Syndicate and Syndicate Wars. Instead, Starbreeze is working on an action-shooter installment in the series.

"It's been a great experience working with EA and an amazing opportunity for us to use our expertise in the first-person shooter and action genres to bring back, and reignite, the signature action/espionage gameplay of Syndicate," Starbreeze CEO Mikael Nermark said in a statement accompanying the announcement.

However, the new Syndicate will keep the grim corporation-run future setting of its predecessors. In 2069, three syndicates (series staple Eurocorp, Cayman Global, and Aspari) wage war for control of the United States. The way they wage that battle is through small groups of technologically augmented humans whose modifications allow them to slow time, hack into rival augmented humans, and perform other activities that can benefit their controllers. Players will control Eurocorp prototype agent Miles Kilo.

EA is attempting to provide a new take on the Syndicate formula with weapons and setting from the original game pulled into the structure of a shooter. The game will also feature four-player cooperative missions, meaning players should be able to re-create the original game's four-man commando units, albeit from a new perspective.

For more on Syndicate, check out GameSpot's review of the series' first sequel, 1996's Syndicate Wars.

@ToTs_00 EA doesn't have the rights for development, only publishing. Some bank owns the necessaries, it won't happen for a LONG time.

EA also has Crusader series that was supposed to be epitome of ultra violence. As for Syndicate Ill take the watch and see approach. And really publisher should not be blaming piracy for bad sales. More like youtube since one can watch the new game without buying it. And that's a good thing, hell without it we would be buying DA2 since some reviews give it high scores.

WAIT! EA already has a perfectly good Cyberpunk FPS series called System Shock! Why didn't EA get Starbreeze to make a new System Shock or to remake the first System Shock?

im not going to get this game because they turn it into a shooter. If i did this remake it will be like gta style game and be like better than crackdown thats what type game i be doing. To me shooters are great like call of duty series battlefeild series and halflife series . But point is i dont see this as a shoot em up and get pp not sure because they got future shoot em up already a big hit and forthcoming rage so no point for this so Gamepot send a big mg to EA saying big disppointment ;[

It would be interesting to see the game from a fps perspective. Hopefully it will be an open world level with interactive vehicles, terminals an such like, with a cyber punk style like the oringal. It should be very blade runner esque.

I wish they could have just gave Syndicate a mordern touch over than turn it into a FPS. I hated Syndicate war for it confused me, but I loved the first one and I still have the first one and Syndicate Wars in my possession Hopefully GOG will be able to secure the first one.

Rumor is that EA wants to cash in on the success of DE:HR . Story being something like corp agent turning on the corporation joining the rebels to stop the new software being released.

id like to pop in and say...... well you have no-one to blame for this but yourself (even im to blame). STOP BUYING FPS GAMES. these publishers are suits and not gamers and as such since its business they wont listen yo you, they will listen to a-n-a-l-yists who tell them sales figure, if you plough money into strategy games and the such the industry will do that. ploughing 16 mill into COD and you will get fps games. its that simple

I have a lot of fond memories regarding Syndicate. At the time it was unique. There wasn't anything like it and that was one of it's most charming and compelling things about it. Taking this unique game and turning it onto a FPS is like taking the Mona Lisa and turning it into a McDonalds sign. All the originality, all the great things about the first Syndicate will be lost and we'll end up with something that is more common in video gaming than it ever was, a FPS. No matter what tweaks, what innovative ideas they bring to this it will boil down to another FPS. I'd be very surprised if this game turns out to be anything more than average. EA should remake the original or at least carry on the style of this game with Syndicate 3. I just hope they don't make Dungeon Keeper 3 a FPS as well as Theme Hospital! (when they get around to these games after butchering this one!)

Stop thinking EA, it's Starbreeze, and Starbreeze makes amazing games, not just basic FPS stuff like your Call of Duties and Halo's. This will be amazing and unique.

Too bad they are getting rid of the strategy aspect. Researching stuff and setting up your agents before each mission, then seeing how it played out in the mission was the fun part. They are removing the spirit of the game.

@bignick217 Variety is good for us, but apparently bad for the developers wallets. A shame really, It's these trends that have killed off entire genre like the space sim, the adventure genre.

@DiabloPL I agree to a point. They just need to pick they're battles better. You don't pick a classic strategy and claim to make a sequel and then completely change the genre. You could probably get away with it later as a "spin-off", but not as a successor. If they really wanted to make an FPS of a classic series, they should have gone for System Shock. That game was already an FPS/RPG and has a huge cult following. and "if" they stayed true to System Shocks' roots, EA would have gotten a lot more respect than they are here with this title. Wrong title to screw with in this fashion.

Making an FPS and giving it the name of a classic from a completely different genre in order to get the nostalgia bucks is just plain insulting.

@Volgin If your deciding to wait and see, then that's fair enough. I'm not going to hold anything against you for it. And I may disagree with your opinion, but I do respect it. I understand what you mean about "wait and see" and then judge. But I do have to contradict 2 things. For the turn based RPG that was fallout, I agree, it did change quite a bit. But my original point still stands, because my whole point was that fallout was still "at it's core" and RPG. Syndicate was a strategy game at it's core. And is now becoming an FPS. That's still a full change of genre and that's what makes a big difference between Fallout and Syndicate. As for Dragon Age, I never said it's success was the direct result of an isometric viewpoint. I was only contradicting your point that the last game Bioware released that had isometric view was Neverwinter Nights. I only said that Dragon Age also had it. As for who used it or not, is kind of beside the point. It was there none-the-less. And to be quite blunt, Dragon Age origins was done in a very old school classic RPG style all the way through. It was the very kind of RPG most current publishers only associate with hardcore gamers. Yet they did it anyway and it was still successful. The point isn't that Dragon Age Origins is successful or not. The point is these publishers are so scared of the money to genre ratio, that they just immediately default to FPS these days. We have too many FPS's already. Give us some variety.

The reason it worked for Fallout is because the Elder Scrolls style of gameplay can hardly be called "shooter" like. It's still an RPG, plus there aren't many games like this, and the lone wanderer freely exploring a wasteland thing works well with the setting. FPS games, on the other hand, are flooding the market and there are very few such games that really stand out these days.

@bignick217 Don't forget that the new XCOM changed perspectives and genres:). It seems like developers are trying to innovate games in the First-Person genre( Riddick, Far Cry, Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Dishonored, Deus Ex,etc). I know that some of these games were FP from the start but my point that devs are trying bland FP games with other genres. Some of it work, some don't.

@bignick217 Fallout did not simply change perspective, they took away the entire turn based combat which was what the fans were crying for since the beginning and cursed Bethsoft for replacing it with VATS. And yet even when Fallout changed perspectives, as you say, we saw the same fan fallout and rage such as the likes we are seeing now, yet when Fallout New Vegas was released, most of the fan's changed mind and opinion. The point of the example isn't about changing genre or perspective rather not judging a game before even seeing the tiniest detail related to it. As for Dragon Age Origins goes, you can't say how many people played it with isometric view, or with 3rd person view or with both, so you can't say that part of the success of Dragon Age Origins was due to it being 3rd person or having the isometric view as an option. But in reality, and as far as I am concerned, perspective and genre mean little to me in a game, what matters is the story narrative, and atmosphere, as such I will wait and see before passing judgement.

@Volgin Actually, your examples are wrong. For one thing, Fallout going from isometric to FPS was good. But you have to remember that Fallout 3 (while turned into an FPS) remained an RPG at it's core. It was still in RPG, just the perspective changed. This on the other hand is not simply a change of perspective. It's a fundamental change of genre. Syndicate was a strategy game. And now it's going to be an FPS. That's a fundamental change of genre. Not simply a change of perspective. There's a big difference there. As for your remark about Bioware. Again, wrong. The last game Bioware did that was technically isometric to a point was, Dragon Age Origins. Yes they zoomed in quite a bit on the character for exploration, but you could fully zoom out to isometric for combat strategy. Yeah it was tweaked, but the gameplay of the classic style was still there. And as you already know, Dragon Age Origins was a huge success. Dragon Age Origins on it's own shows that there very much "is" still an audience for that style of classic gameplay. EA just needs to start thinking outside that very small box they seem to be keeping themselves in.

Strange times , how with just a few words a game can go from my most interested in seeing for years to being utterly obliterated from my radar. if either EA OR STARBREEZE WERE TO ACTUAL READ some of the comments not just here but every site that has this news they might see how bad an idea this truly is because the vote is almost unanimous against it

@Volgin It's always fun to wonder about stuff like that. However, you can guess as much as you want to and it won't be close. Coming from my perspective: I've never heard of the Syndicate series, so for me this will be a new start. That being said: it's usually never a good idea to change a classic's formula, for me it feels like false branding. I think that Red Faction would still be alive if they hadn't strayed from the PS2 days of it being an FPS. I will however keep an open mind on things like this, might as well give it a chance...especially since I've never played a syndicate game.

I wonder if they actually made it into a PC exclusive RTS game, with turn based combat, what the sales figures would be? I don't know but almost for certain not as much as a multi-platform FPS/RPG game. I mean the comments here are just sometimes ridiculous, no offense, but most of you are making EA look like Satan, who intentionally sought to ruin this game just to spite you, instead the logical reasoning would be that EA took the most financially viable route. Your judging a game, that not only has yet to be released, but not even a single photo, trailer, gameplay video or preview was even posted. Look at it this way, most of the people who made Fallout 1 and 2, also made Fallout New Vegas, and that turned out to be a great game. Bioware's last foreway into isometric RPG's was neverwinter nights, and every game it has released afterwards was purely 3rd person, and they were all great. As such there is no reason yet to doubt this game, wait for a screenshot at the very least.

What point is there in re-launching a classic, and then alienate the actual people old enough to REMEMBER the game ? The people who don't know "Syndicate" to begin with have ENOUGH shooters to choose amongst, and hillariously enough the potentially biggest of them is EA's own BF 3. It's a wasted opportunity not only to bring back a legendary IP, but to revive a genre. And the same rubbish is going on with X-COM. I hope they'll fail miserably with that approach, and that Jagged Alliance: Back in Action is an instant hit ! (even though it doesn't stay 100% true to the original formula either).

Way to go EA... Great way to show your creativity. You're gonna take a classic strategy game and turn it into yet another shooter. Wow, who would've thought it possible. Seriously, if your not going to stay true to the games roots, then don't bother revamping it. We already have way too many shooters out there right now. And most of them come from you and activision. Come on, I'm serious here. Stop with the fn shooters already. It's gotten old a long time ago. Grow some ca-hones and take a chance. Release it as a strategy true to it's roots or don't bother.
