Syndicate revamp coming in early 2012

Electronic Arts bringing classic PC action-strategy series back as a shooter for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC; Darkness studio Starbreeze developing.

The rumors were true. Electronic Arts today confirmed that it is bringing back the Syndicate franchise with The Darkness and Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay developer Starbreeze Studios at the helm.

Why bother with a marketing campaign when you have a Persuadertron?
Why bother with a marketing campaign when you have a Persuadertron?

Set for release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC early next year, EA's newest Syndicate will not be the same top-down action-strategy blend that gamers may remember from the two original PC games, Syndicate and Syndicate Wars. Instead, Starbreeze is working on an action-shooter installment in the series.

"It's been a great experience working with EA and an amazing opportunity for us to use our expertise in the first-person shooter and action genres to bring back, and reignite, the signature action/espionage gameplay of Syndicate," Starbreeze CEO Mikael Nermark said in a statement accompanying the announcement.

However, the new Syndicate will keep the grim corporation-run future setting of its predecessors. In 2069, three syndicates (series staple Eurocorp, Cayman Global, and Aspari) wage war for control of the United States. The way they wage that battle is through small groups of technologically augmented humans whose modifications allow them to slow time, hack into rival augmented humans, and perform other activities that can benefit their controllers. Players will control Eurocorp prototype agent Miles Kilo.

EA is attempting to provide a new take on the Syndicate formula with weapons and setting from the original game pulled into the structure of a shooter. The game will also feature four-player cooperative missions, meaning players should be able to re-create the original game's four-man commando units, albeit from a new perspective.

For more on Syndicate, check out GameSpot's review of the series' first sequel, 1996's Syndicate Wars.

This is a BLACK DAY indeed! :( I mean seriously is strarbreeze incapable of making anything other than a FPS genre. AS a fan of the original game i have waited years for a true reboot of this amazing game & my number one fear was it being turned in to yet another FPS :(. I mean why even call this syndicate @ ive seen the pictuers of the guy you play and he just looks like you typical pretty boy avatar and nothing like a citizen that was dragged from the street by agents against his will, had his body parts removed and replaced with cybernetic implants then had all traces of his humanity and free will wiped to become a mindless drone who only serves the orders of some malicious corporation's greed. I had at least held out some hope that this would take the grand theft auto 4 sand box city 3rd person viewpoint as thats about as close as you could get to the original games intended play style using current modern graphics. But no what they have done here is a travesty and all they have achieved is a deus ex HR rip off, but unlike that which stayed close & respected the original source material of the first game this is nothing but a cheap cash in loosely based on a successful formula that is not even remotely similar. Im going to have to make a syndicate mod for GTA4 if i want to experiance the what made the original such a great game to begin with. what next dungeon keeper the driving game? magic carpet the space simulator? or perhaps a civilization a FPS.

This is my first post in here. Syndicate being a FPS, there are no words that can describe my dissapointment... Another absolute classic ruined by money-hunger gaming companies ,after X-Com

EA have become the biggest, faceless, money grabbing and creativity theiving company in gaming today! As many of your have already said - WHY AN FPS?!?!?! How good would a top down/3 quarter view game have looked in HD (and with the ability to swing the camera round and see inside buildings this time) Maybe even being able to switch to a Gears type perspective for combat or just when inside buildings?! But seriously, again, WHY AN FPS?!?!?!

An FPS Syndicate???!!! WHY OH GOD WHY??? This was the first computer game I ever played (plus X-Wing,) why do they have to dumb it down? Are there not enough FPS's on the market? Is all you know how to make is FPS's and repackaged sports titles over and over again? You've even corrupted Bioware into making their RPG's into shooter/action style games - though I am addicted to their writing, so I keep playing them. I hate you EA.

"Too good to be true" I thought when I read the headline. And I was proven right. The world is a cruel place.

I agree with the majority of the followers here, I really hoped they would keep the RTS format of the previous games, unfortunately like X-Com and Fallout another one bites the dust. Like there isn't enough FPS out there. *sigh*. At least Jagged Alliance 3 looks like they will be staying true to the brand.

Well, that's another of my all time favourite game series that's going to be ruined. Syndicate was/is still a fantastic game and to 'reinvent' it as a shooter (let me guess, FPS?!) is, I think, gonna ruin the game. I just pray that EA can prove me wrong.

EA...your titles in my library are dwindling, im even starting to play the originals again like the original X-Com (from Microprose) and Simcity 4 (by Maxis) and the sims 2 over the new versions like Sims 3 and the only sports game you make thats worth more than $10 is FIFA 12. I can literally only think of 3 maybe 4 EA titles i own anymore. Crysis , by Crytec but published from EA and FIFA 12, Dead space (but those guys have left EA to make Modern Warfare 3) with Activision. Ive also Pre ordered Modern Warfare 3 over BF3 because im still not convinced BF3 will be any different to Bad company 2/BF2 with its Conquest mode(Thats really just team deathmatch with flags ang tickets over a large drawn out map). I want some more innovation in Battlefield, not just a reinforcement/ticket system. How about a REAL CONQUEST mode, when you take all flags OR lose all tickets the round is OVER and you can win either way tickets or flags..instead of take all flags and the round still plays out for the next 2 hours for no reason. I look in my STEAM library theres nothing there from EA (because EA sux) and i look on the EA website and theres seriously only 3 games there i even WANT to play lol.

Probably play as little attention to detail with the world as X-Com and Fallout 3 did too.

Yup, it's a shooter.

I once wrote this in << LINK REMOVED >>.
You just watch. That game's themes, backstory and original gameplay designs that involved a lot of guns are just too good for EA not to turn the "re-imagining" of Syndicate into yet another shooter.
To be honest, I had really wished that I would be wrong. :(

So they're pulling an X-Com on us. Another legendary strategy getting butchered into a shooter, as if they really needed the name. Who else except strategy players would know it anyway? Shame on you EA.

syndicate wars was so good when i read that it was gonna be a FPS i was so let down. There are so many FPS on the market people are starting to get tired of them. The originals were so good and classic that it is a shame EA doesn't, have the confidence in themselves to make a game that they don't have a tried and true formula for. I still hope the game does well just wish it would be differnt then every other game out there. you would think that someone at EA would be wise enough to say hey we got a billion FPS comming out lets try something new.

Though I know 286, 386,486, XT, AT, etc, but I don't like RTS, but I like to put couple of bullets on opfors' heads inside the monitor. If only this could be fresh breeze over all the mundane modern military shooters, and come with PVP MP, many weapons, perks, I am all for it and know many will. And EA probably can sell lot more if it follows the golden rules of FPS.

Yes! Syndicate is coming back! NO! Yet another first person shooter! Think I would have preferred a straight port of the originals as an XBL Arcade title. Either that or a bit of time and imagination spent on thinking up an original idea. Is that how it's going to work from now on? Reboot old and cherished IPs as FPS titles. I'm getting seriously bored of games now.

@roy_newell - If you mean it is in a cyberpunk setting then yes it is like Deus Ex. But there are a dozen shooters set in the modern day where a US soldier fights some terrorist group. Personally I'm very glad that cyberpunk is back in style. E.Y.E Divine Cybermany lead the charge, then came Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and we have Hard Reset on the way this week, and now Syndicate next year. All we need is a new version of Neuromancer (ie one that isn't a text based adventure) and I'll be happy.

What sad news for Syndicate ,another FPS..... I find myself to be very protective of this IP. This could've been a fantastic unique RTS as Syndicate and Syndicate Wars were. Now a ho-hum FPS with some "new" gimmick to sell units. Like,..you're a cyborg in a coma? Ridiculous right? What's next? Dungeon Keeper Racing game!? I truly miss the Bullfrog development team... Somebody get me a Persuadertron! ;) *side note* Syndicate predates Deus Ex which was influenced by Syndicate ,and is inspired from the movies Blade Runner and The Terminator.
