Syndicate revamp coming in early 2012

Electronic Arts bringing classic PC action-strategy series back as a shooter for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC; Darkness studio Starbreeze developing.

The rumors were true. Electronic Arts today confirmed that it is bringing back the Syndicate franchise with The Darkness and Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay developer Starbreeze Studios at the helm.

Why bother with a marketing campaign when you have a Persuadertron?
Why bother with a marketing campaign when you have a Persuadertron?

Set for release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC early next year, EA's newest Syndicate will not be the same top-down action-strategy blend that gamers may remember from the two original PC games, Syndicate and Syndicate Wars. Instead, Starbreeze is working on an action-shooter installment in the series.

"It's been a great experience working with EA and an amazing opportunity for us to use our expertise in the first-person shooter and action genres to bring back, and reignite, the signature action/espionage gameplay of Syndicate," Starbreeze CEO Mikael Nermark said in a statement accompanying the announcement.

However, the new Syndicate will keep the grim corporation-run future setting of its predecessors. In 2069, three syndicates (series staple Eurocorp, Cayman Global, and Aspari) wage war for control of the United States. The way they wage that battle is through small groups of technologically augmented humans whose modifications allow them to slow time, hack into rival augmented humans, and perform other activities that can benefit their controllers. Players will control Eurocorp prototype agent Miles Kilo.

EA is attempting to provide a new take on the Syndicate formula with weapons and setting from the original game pulled into the structure of a shooter. The game will also feature four-player cooperative missions, meaning players should be able to re-create the original game's four-man commando units, albeit from a new perspective.

For more on Syndicate, check out GameSpot's review of the series' first sequel, 1996's Syndicate Wars.

Bringing it back as a shooter... Way to be so painfully obvious EA. This effectively kills any interest I had in the revamp. Damn, even I thought you had a bit more creativity in you than this.

It seems that all classic franchises a being turned into FPS shooters not really related to the old games (mechanics wise), XCOM and now Syndicate. I am pretty sure they are solid FPS games but it's a shame that no developer seems to be able to create games that are visceral and gory and still tense and exciting. Anyhow, this is on my radar now.

"Electronic Arts bringing classic PC action-strategy series back as a shooter for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC" ... I think i threw up a bit in my mouth. Another PC game to be turned into a consolized piece of garbage generic shooter on the PC. JUST WHAT WE NEED!!

@Crash_WL, When you say, "keep on hating EA, it's the current trend," do you mean that nobody genuinely hates the company? They actually like Electronic Arts but are saying they don't because they've been seduced by some bandwagon hate campaign? Is that what you do? Is everything you like and don't like based on trends? Maybe you do the opposite? If it's popular to hate something, you pretend you like it?

MightyWings: The difference there is that Red Faction changed from an average, so-so shooter to a good 3rd person game. Simply put- RF was stagnating and had to try something different to revive itself. But with Syndicate, you already have a truly massive and immersive set-up which kept you hooked for years. EA are potentially sacrificing that most appealing part of the game and rolling the dice on the complete gamble of a genre change where it isn't strictly warranted. I don't want to remember Syndicate as the same average, so-so shooter that Red Faction once was.

Awesome! Can't wait for more RTS games to be horribly mutilated and pressed into generic shooters that don't stand out in the current market of generic shooters!

When I read this news I was initially excited, until I read that they're turning it into an FPS. Here's the deal, I love FPS' and I own a lot of them. But the reason Syndicate was fun, was because it was an RTS strategy game. I'm sorry, but we already have a Deus Ex, Syndicate is obviously trying to bite off of that pie.

I played Syndicate Wars on PSOne. What i dont get is how an you be sure this is going to be a FPS. Red faction changed from FPS to Thired person and came up with two good games. Soo maybe this is just going to a thrid person shooter like resident evil searies with AI partners or players. Dont think that will be bad. Yeah for any smartmouths out there i know they sacked red faction series :P

Im with Chemical-mix and FoeCrusher. Syndicate and Syndicate Wars was cool because they were a different kind of game with a different kind of strategy involved. If you are going to turn it into another FPS then you should "move along" the dumb idea and if you think it might work you should "keep moving" past the really dumb idea. I give great big farts and poop sounds for this idea.

Hmm I find it irritating and a clear indication that these developers are lazy that they would stick to FPS despite the series origins being in top down. Unwise move, as you set to likely piss off all the former fans of the series EA.

Well it doesn't say it's going to be a First Person shooter. It just says it's going to be an action shooter so just have faith and cross your fingers the game won't turn into one of those.

Bah! another pointless shooter. Unlike fallout which basically was a top down turn based shooter, Syndicate was an RTS. So its transition to an FPS is basically making an entirely different game. Just like X-com (may it fail horrendously) you don't need to piggyback on old idea that new gamers will never have played and older gamers will resent. Hello game developers there are other types of games that can be made! Anyone listening? Well we all know the answer to that is no. @M-S-M-S you are right the opening movie was one of the creepiest I am disgusted.

Hmmm. As a massive fan of the originals, i'm not sure if FPS is the way to take this series. Already huge, established competition in that market. I reckon that maybe a far-zoom, quasi-tactical shooter would have been a better way forward. Or even just a straight upgrade of the original. Instead, they are going to be effectively starting from scratch, switching the very genre of the game. It may end up destroying the very thing that made Syndicate great. I wish them all the best, but i'm warily hedging my bets with "wait and see" with this one...

Whatever EA touches, turns to $h!t,sooner or later.I hate them more than any gaming company.I havent played these Syndicate games, but if I did,I would be really dissapointed by turning a RTS into some stupid FPS like all of you ppl here are.We have more than enough of FPS games lately, and almost all are mediocre copies of one another. Its been quite some time since I truly enjoyed playing an FPS game, but I must admit,I loved Hard Reset demo, guess I will buy it when it comes out(tomorrow).

LAME. It's too bad that developers try to appeal the masses and continued to create FPS after FPS in already over saturated FPS market. IMO it would be nice if a game company decided to release a classic RTS, instead of making an FPS, they should try to make an RTS that is console worthy.

I never played the originals, so I don't know what I am supposed to be missing, but this change to its genre doesn't bother me, considering this would be my first exposure to this series. Perhaps I should pick up the original two games. But I will concur with my gaming brethren below and say I'm sure this game will ruin the series just like Fallout 3 ruined OH WAIT.

Hmmm...The only real problem with the original syndicate was when you went inside a building, why didn't they make it similiar. The technology now allows for detailed environments indoors and outdoors, they really could have made this game a new modern classic for a new generation of gamers. What a waste.

The only way I would consider accepting them making an FPS based on the franchise would be if they were also working on an actual RTS to properly succeed the IP and release it at the same time (same with X-com) Hopefully when X-com fails , publishers will begin to listen to the consumer base . By the way I am an FPS fan , I just don't want every classic franchise being made into an FPS just because it's a popular genre, that's what ruined the WW2 FPS genre. Next up an FPS based on wing commander

R.I.P. Bullfrog. You made amazing games back in the day. I was excited about a revamp till they said fps. It makes me sad. Revamp the original. It was fantastic. Rts is not dead! Command and conquer renegade was a fps conversion of an rts and it was a big pile of fail. Don't do it EA. You already have the BF franchise and already ruined crysis for everyone.

I don't mind it being an FPS/RPG like System Shock or Deus Ex, or even a Third person RPG like most Bioware games, what matters in these sorts of games are the atmosphere, the narrative, storyline and immersion. I think Starbreeze did a good job with escape from butcher bay, and I hope they do the same over here. Something that needs to be accepted is that no matter how nostalgic Isometric games makes us feel, or how better they might be over their successors, for example I prefer Fallout 1&2 over the 3rd one, they are not feasible market wise, and EA is a business like any other who needs to turn in a profit, businesses are not charity cases in the end. There is no point in moaning about it, EA is not going to change their plans, and the game has yet to be released, all we can do is hope that Starbreeze studios do a good job and respect the source material.

It's funny how everyone calls it an FPS, even though it's only mentioned as a "shooter" in the whole article. The studio having made FPS games before doesn't mean this is going to be one. The first Gears was going to be an Unreal sequel too, but Epic changed way for their own good. Just saying, keep on hating EA, it's the current trend.

the whole feeling of the game was based on the fact that the agents were doing your evil bidding & you dictating orders to them from your corporate empire you were never really playing as one of them, the game was never intended to take a personal note of there view point, they are just mindless unemotional drones carrying out your evil desires killing bystanders and performing suicide bombings. There is no room in this game for humanity & remorse thats whats syndicate was about

You do know it´s the same studio that brought us the first Riddick-game. I would say that it was a pretty different experience from a lot of other shooters, so if they´re not getting completely f**ed by EA to make it a "hit-game", I think Starbreeze - if anyone - can deliver something really interesting. I rather think "set in the syndicate-universe" instead. And I´d like to see more of that, like when Sledgehammer said they´ve been working on a TPS in the CoD universe. I´m not a big fan of CoD (anymore) but the idea got me excited anyway.

For God's sakes EA, if you want a Cyberpunk RPG/FPS hybrid, you still own the System Shock IP, how about SS3? As for Syndicate I will wait and see, maybe it will turn out good, like Fallout New Vegas, and not Fallout 3.

I share the collective view in the comments here.. I've been waiting to hear news of a Syndicate revival for YEARS, so I thought "Yeahhh!! Finally!". Then I read "shooter"... Oh no. Most of these kids are going to think it's a Deus Ex ripoff, not knowing it's a much older IP. Why doesn't any publisher have the stones to bring it back in its original format with a graphics overhaul and a beefy SP campaign?? Well, I hope Starbreeze is atleast given enough time by EA to do a proper job and not turn it into a generic Deus-Ex/Splinter Cell clone. It would be awesome if they kept the original's ominous musical theme as well.
