There Is No World Where Starfield Is So Good People Sell Their PS5 And Move To Xbox, Phil Spencer Says

"We are not in the business of out-consoling Sony or out-consoling Nintendo."

Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer has commented on the battle between Microsoft and rivals Sony and Nintendo, saying Xbox sits in third place and the idea that Microsoft could just make better games to gain marketshare doesn't hold up. Spencer said even if Starfield is the best game in the history of the world, that wouldn't be enough to help Xbox overtake PlayStation.

Speaking to Kinda Funny, Spencer said Microsoft's goal is not to "out-console" Sony or Nintendo in terms of sales. Unfortunately for Microsoft, it lost the sales race in the Xbox One/PS4 generation, and the company has no hope of making it back to No. 1 by console sales alone, Spencer said.

"We are not in the business of out-consoling Sony or out-consoling Nintendo. There isn't really a great solution or win for us. And I know that will upset a ton of people. But the truth of the matter is that when you're third place in a console marketplace and the top two players are as strong as they are and in certain cases have a discrete focus on doing deals and other things that will--that make being Xbox hard for us as a team--our vision is everyone on console has a great experience and they feel like a first-class citizen," Spencer said.

"I see commentary out there--'If you just build great games, everything will turn around.' It's just not true [that] if we go off and build great games, all of a sudden you're going to see console share shift in some dramatic way. We lost the worst generation to lose in the Xbox One generation, where everybody built their digital library of games. 90% of the people every year who walk into a retailer to buy a console are already a member of one of the three ecosystems. Their digital library is there."

Given that people's gaming libraries are now made up significantly of digital games that move with them to new machines, the era of new console generations marking a clear line in the sand have ended. People can now more seamlessly shift from platform to platform, at least within the same family, which makes it so difficult to convince people to switch. Even if Starfield is the best game ever, that won't be enough for Xbox to overtake Sony, Spencer said.

"I see a lot of pundits out there who kind of want to go back to the time where we all had cartridges and discs and every new generation was a clean slate. And you could switch the whole console share. That is just not the world that we are in today. There is no world where Starfield is an 11/10 and people start selling their PS5s. That's not going to happen," Spencer said.

So what does Microsoft do, then? Spencer said the company has a "unique vision" in the marketplace where it doesn't focus exclusively on a console platform. Instead, Microsoft is building an infrastructure that supports games across devices, including phones and tablets through streaming. In short, Microsoft wants to make games available on as many platforms as possible to help reach the widest possible audience, Spencer said.

"The console is the core of the Xbox brand, no doubt, so we will stay focused on making sure that console experience is awesome. Some people want to hold us up and believe we are a 'better green version of what the blue guys do,' and I'm just going to say, 'There is not a win for Xbox in staying in the wake of somebody else.' We have to go off and do our own thing," Spencer said.

The PS5 is nearing 40 million systems sold since 2020, while the Switch has sold more than 122 million units. Microsoft, for its part, does not announce Xbox sales numbers.

In other news, Spencer recently reacted to Redfall's poor reviews and explained what went wrong.

he's just being humble. He totally intends to crush Sony with CoD, FO, TES exclusivity and eventually GTA when they buy out Take 2, Rockstar, EA and Ubisoft. They're going to buy out the entire industry and leave Sony and Nintendo with just 1st party games.

I can’t be the only one that cringed at the poor grammar. When making a noun into a gerund form of a verb, it is typical to hyphenate (e.g. out console-ing Sony or Nintendo). When written, “out-consoling” it implies that they could potentially do a better job of supporting an individual dealing with trauma.

The exclusivity of console games is why I haven’t yet bought a PS5, have bought a Switch, and have a Gaming PC instead of an XBox.

The Switch has the most exclusive games, PS5 has a few but they usually make their way to Windows, but because of MS saying any game that comes to XBox will come to Windows, there’s no reason to have an XBox.

I fully agree that a game will not make anyone switch, especially now that everything is digital. I have a library of hundreds of games, and no way I would switch and buy them all again. Even the last time I bought a PS4 in addition to my XBox one, the PS4 was collecting dust.

In my opinion, the biggest mistake XBox made is to focus on some very narrow selected markets. I live now in Malaysia, and XBox is not even available here. You have to import it from Singapore, even though Microsoft itself is here, but they do not support XBox. So obviously, people would switch because even if they wanted, it is a struggle. On the other hand, Sony just won it here because they were available. I guess the first thing you need to do to win is to show up. I just stayed with XBox when I moved, because I have used XBox since I switched from Gamecube, and all my friends are on XBox. I am still happy with Xbox and will stay with it, but I am scared that Starfield is a letdown like Redfall.

Spencer is being brutally honest about being in the third place among their competitors, Sony and Nintendo. In my opinion, working on a new Xbox console along with developing games should be their focus now. Some games will be successful, and some will not turn out so well. However, a game's failure to meet people's expectations is definitely hurtful for those who bought it, but we have to also think that there have been many games in the past that were projected to be successful initially as well when they came out but didn't turn out to be. Failures and successes are part of life. We can only move forward, improve our mistakes, and keep going. The same applies to all things in life too.

"There Is No World Where Starfield Is So Good People Sell Their PS5 And Move To Xbox", but there's a world where someone like me who paid for 2 years of "all access" got tired of the absolute lack of good exclusive games promised and the trash put out just to fill the catalog that will not renew gamepass and possibly sell his Series X. I bet that's a possibility you didn't considered Phil, did you? 😜

@kanakid: That's a good point. I wonder how many Xbox players just pay for Gamepass and don't buy any games? It would be pretty easy for someone to sell their Xbox in that case. Same for PS+ I guess, to a lesser extent.

So,one Starfield(if its a hit) will not change much...it will just make Xbox and Bethesda fans happy.
But several high quality games in a row will/could change the narrative around Xbox and if you can keep the quality high with future titles THAN we can talk about gamers thinking about buying a Xbox.

Now,Starfield is a huge game and its Bethesda we talk about...it will have bugs and glitches at launch.
I just hope the reviewers will keep the same approach as they had with the latest buggy mess of a Star Wars game which scored 8 and 9s around the net.

And to you GS...dont hide bad pc ports of PS5 games behind a high score PS5 review again.
Are you scared Sony wont send you review codes in future?

It goes like this. Starfield is good and well-optimized.

Then, Microsoft releases some other good exclusive games like Starfield in just a couple of years, right before the end of a console generation.

When the next Xbox comes out, it will again, be a competition to Sony PlayStation again. It's as simple as that due to the limited number of exclusive titles for PS5 right now.

@cau3daohoa: the very lead of Xbox plainly states here he completely disagrees on that...And limited titles? It's been all Sony and Nintendo going on almost 9 years straight and their exclusive titles are anything but 'limited'. It's been consistent releases with growing sales figure dominance and their titles are moving into mainstream media like television and movies and doing really well so far there. We living in the same world?

@wisdomcjs: I specifically said "PS5 exclusive titles". Take another look at it. Say you have a PS5 now, what games can you play that all others cannot? Demon's Souls, God of War Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West, Gran Turismo 7... that's really pretty much it.

The Last of Us Part II? Available on PS4.

Ghost of Tsushima? Same with above.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales? Available on PC, same with a lot of other PS exclusives that have been remastered and/or remade.

The other exclusives are not that popular to all audience.

What I'm trying to say is that, despite the advanced hardware innovation and Xbox' mess with exclusives, the PS5 is slowing down as well. They don't have as many exclusive games as before, which opens up the opportunity for Xbox to catch up. However, it's not happening anytime soon, hence my comments.

But if you talk about the other generations of consoles, like the PS3 or PS4, it's a different story.

@cau3daohoa: You're absolutely right. I only had a gaming PC until I bought a PS5 last week. I really loved HZD and loved what I played of FW and didn't want to wait for the PC release in 2025ish (loving this damn game so far). But I was pretty surprised that there are really only 5 games I can only play on the PS5. I don't get all the trash talk about XBOX missing exclusives. Neither system has very many.

@cau3daohoa: the PS5 isn't slowing down though. It's share in the market over Xbox has been consistent or better from the previous gen with no evidence of slowing down in the mid term. Your 'it'll be better next time' point just doesn't make sense to me either. Phil points out in a recent statement from Xbox that 'we lost the most important generation' referring to Xbox one era leading into the current. That's because with backwards compatibility and overall game library being an important sell in the industry, it's simply outclassed not only currently but in future products as well, and they don't have good answers to close that gap.

@wisdomcjs: I don't think you really understand what I said. Anyways, there is no denying that the PS5 is selling well. Its sales are breaking records, I fully agree. I was merely talking about the exclusive titles for the console. PS5 is slowing down in terms of exclusive titles.

Looking at the future awaited game list, I don't see anything too fancy, Spider-Man 2 I guess. That's why I said Xbox can do a great job with Starfield, then with a couple of more games. Then, the next console can start competing again with PlayStation, not beating, just competing.

I don't care what anyone says I'm in love with my Series X. To me it's one of the greatest consoles of all time and plays 99% of the library I had in 2006 plus all the great games now. I don't give a hoot about any of Sony's exclusives so far which consist of third person single player games that all feel kinda the same.

How Sony is able to be such a big player by simply regurgitating PS4 games with slightly better graphics is beyond me and IMO XBOX has far much more variety of games overall than PS5.

Phil is humble and Jim is cutthroat and that has always been facts. I will always admire Phil's honesty over Sony's double standards in the market.

Before I get called a "fanboy" keep in mind that I definitely own more Playstation games than you and I used to love the brand. But the Sony I've seen politically over the past few years? YUCK.

@Slannmage: They WOULD make more money that way, wouldn't they? I guess it's not about money, hence the fact that Microsoft or Xbox studios is trying to purchase Activision blizzard. But Playstation shouldn't be worried about it anyway. Didn't they just have a record breaking sales period for ps5?

Why would i go out to buy me a pc and a proper monitor(and on top i would have to find a new place for the combo) , which is probably 2x times more expensive just to play the same games?

@s9743469: that's not the problem, that's the solution. Microsoft realized they lost the console race and there's no winning back, so instead they make a shit-ton of money through games "anywhere". Measuring the "race" through console sales alone doesn't tell the whole story anymore, that's Phil's argument.

@MigGui: Trouble is, if MS think they've lost console race, they may as well retire Xbox and stick with the play anything anywhere concept. They are spending $$$ on something that will never outcompete PS5. And that's a shame because I really wanted Xbox to succeed. I loved the 360 back in the day. But for now, I'll stick with PC/PS5.

@s9743469: I don’t think one would only participate in a market if they can dominate it. The Xbox console exists because it is a brand setter and it would be a lot harder to play the race against Sony and Nintendo without a box. But the fact that they lose money on each console sold is another reason why the console is just a part of the ecosystem they’re trying to build. And yes, if cloud gaming really take off we might not see another Xbox console, but we might not see any other console either. Or we might still see consoles, but they’re kind of Steam Decks, just PCs with a different characteristic. Or maybe even Sony focuses on making super powerful TVs for gaming. I don’t know and I don’t mind, what matters to me is the games, not the system.

@s9743469: yep pretty much, gaming on 3 platforms to be able to play all the games is nice.... I too pondered the point of owning an xbox.... PlayStation and Nintendo both make games that are only found on their systems, I definitely do double dip on the PlayStation games that have come to PC but why get an xbox if PC will have all games there too, only missing out of a handful of Xbox games that i can easily play on an xbox 1 like rare replay or red dead 1...its also easy to emulate those on a pc as well but yea the reasons of having xbox are pretty non existent...game pass is not a system seller

no worries uncle phil...the xbox already clobbers the ps5 in games. Gamepass is simply miles ahead.

With that said, its true that the reason xbox is behind is because of the digital library from last gen locking people in place. However, that doesn't mean much, since xbox has smart delivery and play anywhere for many of its games. Buy a game once on xbox and play it on pc too if you like.

This is why I committed to buying games on windows store and xbox. You always get the best experience.

Too many 30FPS titles is the sole reason I gave up on consoles. Now that I've been gaming on PC, most games I play run between 120fps - 144fps. When you play games at 120+fps for a few years, going back to console 30FPS drunk vision is just not an option. If all games were 30fps, I would give up on videogames altogether.

@faithxvoid: Vsync is not trickery. Find a game with a built in 30fps cap or use whatever fps cap D3DOverrider used to use (should be one of the ones in nvinspector, maybe nvcps new one), use appropriate 1/2,1/3, or 1/4 sync in nvcp, make sure triple buffering is enabled and viola.

I literally just tested this on my old monitor, as there was recent talk about this on a site I visit. I tested my old fps cap out with 1/2 sync and it was at least as smooth as console. It is better to use a lower refresh display and use 1/2 sync imo, but most claim that 1/3 or 1/4 sync on a higher refresh monitor works better!

30fps on my main display with no proper syncing specifically for lower fps looks like crap.

Of course we aren't expected to sell PS5 for Xbox, we keep PS5, and buy Starfield, (If we want it) on a PC,becuase Bethesda game's need unoffical patches from modders to make the games good.

@colterrozzell: I wish Nintendo would sell all their old classics on PC. I'm talking about the games that you can't even play on a Switch. Games like Mario Galaxy 2, and lots of the classic Zelda/Link titles.

Why doesn't Nintendo want to sell their old classic games? Or at the very least, make them backwards compatible on the Switch. I would run-out and by a Switch today if all the classic Wii and Wii U games were available for download.

Imma call bullshit. I’ve literally been waiting for games I feel I need to play to get a series X. If starfield is good I might buy one literally for just exclusives….but this seems to imply a “why try to compete with games when we know they’ll fall short” mentality. The dude has lost faith in his studios to make landscape shaping games, to the point he doesn’t think any of them can make a game that would actually sell consoles. As a longtime Xbox fan and user that is legitimately sad. Love my ps5 but I’d also love for Xbox studios to take their foot out of their ass and make some good games and/or stop killing great franchises for zero real reason.
