There Is No World Where Starfield Is So Good People Sell Their PS5 And Move To Xbox, Phil Spencer Says

"We are not in the business of out-consoling Sony or out-consoling Nintendo."

Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer has commented on the battle between Microsoft and rivals Sony and Nintendo, saying Xbox sits in third place and the idea that Microsoft could just make better games to gain marketshare doesn't hold up. Spencer said even if Starfield is the best game in the history of the world, that wouldn't be enough to help Xbox overtake PlayStation.

Speaking to Kinda Funny, Spencer said Microsoft's goal is not to "out-console" Sony or Nintendo in terms of sales. Unfortunately for Microsoft, it lost the sales race in the Xbox One/PS4 generation, and the company has no hope of making it back to No. 1 by console sales alone, Spencer said.

"We are not in the business of out-consoling Sony or out-consoling Nintendo. There isn't really a great solution or win for us. And I know that will upset a ton of people. But the truth of the matter is that when you're third place in a console marketplace and the top two players are as strong as they are and in certain cases have a discrete focus on doing deals and other things that will--that make being Xbox hard for us as a team--our vision is everyone on console has a great experience and they feel like a first-class citizen," Spencer said.

"I see commentary out there--'If you just build great games, everything will turn around.' It's just not true [that] if we go off and build great games, all of a sudden you're going to see console share shift in some dramatic way. We lost the worst generation to lose in the Xbox One generation, where everybody built their digital library of games. 90% of the people every year who walk into a retailer to buy a console are already a member of one of the three ecosystems. Their digital library is there."

Given that people's gaming libraries are now made up significantly of digital games that move with them to new machines, the era of new console generations marking a clear line in the sand have ended. People can now more seamlessly shift from platform to platform, at least within the same family, which makes it so difficult to convince people to switch. Even if Starfield is the best game ever, that won't be enough for Xbox to overtake Sony, Spencer said.

"I see a lot of pundits out there who kind of want to go back to the time where we all had cartridges and discs and every new generation was a clean slate. And you could switch the whole console share. That is just not the world that we are in today. There is no world where Starfield is an 11/10 and people start selling their PS5s. That's not going to happen," Spencer said.

So what does Microsoft do, then? Spencer said the company has a "unique vision" in the marketplace where it doesn't focus exclusively on a console platform. Instead, Microsoft is building an infrastructure that supports games across devices, including phones and tablets through streaming. In short, Microsoft wants to make games available on as many platforms as possible to help reach the widest possible audience, Spencer said.

"The console is the core of the Xbox brand, no doubt, so we will stay focused on making sure that console experience is awesome. Some people want to hold us up and believe we are a 'better green version of what the blue guys do,' and I'm just going to say, 'There is not a win for Xbox in staying in the wake of somebody else.' We have to go off and do our own thing," Spencer said.

The PS5 is nearing 40 million systems sold since 2020, while the Switch has sold more than 122 million units. Microsoft, for its part, does not announce Xbox sales numbers.

In other news, Spencer recently reacted to Redfall's poor reviews and explained what went wrong.

as someone who's been on xbox since 360, this was depressing to read. cant imagine bethesda is too happy with him talking down starfield either. whether the game is good or bad, the devs have spent years working on it. let the audience decide if its 11/10 or not. i bought a ps4 to play god of war and last of us. never regretted that decision. great games are the only thing that really convince gamers of anything. microsoft/xbox is so out of touch with their own demographic. this reads like a eulogy

@dominicwow: I sure regret buying my PS4 console. It was by far the least played console I've ever owned. And most of the games I played on my PS4 were last-gen remasters like the Bioshock and Uncharted trilogy.

Phil seems to have a sensible argument. There are many factors that sway people to play in certain places. For me, while PS5 clearly has better games overall I rarely turn it on. I don't like the controller and I don't like the UI. Actually i dont even like most of their 1st party games either. So I play on xbox, when I'm not on PC that is.

Also, at this point I'm really not sure why we keep doing this. But why do we act like the only games available are exclusives? I have to imagine that big budget 1st party games make up maybe 5% of us core gamers library. Stop acting like you all only buy halo, forza, gears, or God of War, horizon, and spider man.

The Playstation controller does suck. The thumbsticks are spaced too close together. When I game on PC, I always use an XBOX controller. I love the feel of it in my hands.

@noodles227: It is because exclusivity is all that matters to a console outside performance. Take today you could buy a PS5 or a Xbox S/X. There are zero new releases on Xbox Series X that you can't also play on PS5. PS5 on the other hand there are multiple good titles only available on PS5. From a consumer its an easy choice today which console offers more value for new releases its the PS5. I'm hoping Starfield and some more exclusives give the Xbox more value as a consumer, then Ill consider buying one.

As for the Phil article lets get real he means there is no way one exclusive regardless of how good it is can sell enough consoles to even come close to the PS5 sales. Xbox was real late to the party this console battle.

Dam ever since Microsoft bought Bethesda they've treated them like runts. Bethesda Studios hasn't done a good game since Fall Out 4 and even that is mixed depending who you ask.

But still, dam they own id Software. & Tango's last game was a surprisingly great game.

@RSM-HQ: Fallout 4 was boring, Skyrim is basically Bethesda best Elder Scrolls game they ever put out and Doom: Eternal is totally one of ID's best game yet. Bethesda isn't runt yet and I'm sure their lastest new IP game Starfield will deliver as I'm actually excited for that game to be honest. (I like what I've seen so for on Starfield)

@davillain: Fall Out 4 is built upon what Skyrim did with a conversation wheel, as such is Skyrim with extra features and content, so by definition if you didn't like one you probably don't like Skyrim either and are being nostalgic.

All subjective but Skyrim is the definition of mid Dav, and I'm someone who defends Skyrim when it's called 'bad'. It's not an awful game but nothing about it is remarkable either. It's the most streamlined, inoffensive AAA game made, while also being as influential as wet paint. No one was inspired by Skyrim outside Bethesda Studios themselves, Dark Souls was the game developers took interest in from 2011.

Skyrim sells well because it's the open world game for open world fans. Sightseeing vistas and bloated 'value' of recycled dull questlines.

As an RPG Skyrim is non-existent, you're character is a Marvel Super Hero who happens to be the best at everything. Zero build variety. Loot is random and discardable, making dungeon hunts all but pointless. Factions don't even work as factions.

And all that leaves for Skyrim is combat and A.I. and I don't even need to brush on those areas because we all know how bad it is.

This is why I'm a supporter of former Elder Scroll creators working on The WayWard Realms, the same people who remade DaggerFall for GoG called DaggerFall Unity; finally the potential of a good Elder Scrolls game.

I can't judge StarField, but from the people who brought us TES Blades and Fall Out 76? I wouldn't hold your breath, even Phil is saying don't and he's the guy who should be singing its praises.

@RSM-HQ: I can't comment on Fallout 76 as I never played it and I didn't follow its development cause Fallout 4 was the final straw for me, so I kinda avoided 76. I like to support new IP games and Bethesda never rubs me the wrong way as I find their games a hit or a miss.

@Zombie8814: I know it was probably not your intent but on the subject of the Amiga, that's a Europe gaming system yes?

The original home to the Worms and Lemming franchises.

Someone I've known in GFAQ for years is a very big fan of the Amiga, that's why I got Putty Squad. Which honestly wasn't that bad even though the remake artstyle is weird.

Had my eye on the franchise Turrican but simply too many versions of the collection is confusing. And finally Zool coming to console, that one looks like it could be fun.

Amiga fans have it good right now.

@RSM-HQ: The Amiga was an old computer made by Commodore. I've never owned an Amiga. But I did have a Commodore 64, and boy did I play a lot of games on it. It was great, you could also plug your Atari 2600 controller into your Commodore.

@RSM-HQ: All those classics can still be played using an emulator. But I don't know why any would want to? The gameplay is quit awful. Of course, at the time, we thought they were great. It also helped to have a very active imagination. Some of those old Atari games, you would literally be playing as a square.

LOL! Check out this game.....

@Zombie8814: HoHo yes it's how I've played a few games such as D00M 64 before the port and Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder.

I know discussing roms and emus is frowned on sites such as Game Spot so I prefer not to bring it up if able. And certainly not promote its use. My stance is if they let me buy a game I will, however if it's not up for purchase for modern platforms I will use other means to try some of these older games. Looking at you Aliens Versus Predator Arcade.

One of the first games I played from Amigas library is called Soldiers of Fortune which I got pretty addicted too as it had a lot in common with classics such as Smash T.V. it's a good game.

As such don't think they're all awful, yet some certainly are, I'm not expecting Zool to be a good Platformer for example but it's an interesting game to check out. Turrican II from what I've read is a fun time but I just haven't got around to it yet, as noted the collections are confusing and no clear answer of which one is the one to grab.

Nonsense man, nonsense! If there were 5 different console with great must play exclusives, then many of you and I would buy them. Great games and exclusives are your lifeline and if you don't see that, then you don't belong in the industry!!!

I also blame the gamepass lauders and I stated that it will lead to lazy game dev before it was now fashionable. Get your gp out of here and give us demos like we had and save our games!

It is very clear what XB wants to do. They want to charge you forever and indefinitely and not give you your monies worth, basically an IV to your streaming and cloud wallet. I will take no part of that as I want a relationship with my games and not this disconnect.

XB has phenomenal backwards compatibility and applaud them for that & they should have continued with that. I am drawn out for waiting for the next big reveal and next gen game from XB, as basically with these statements we have our answer. XB will intentionally not provide us with any great next gen games. This is disheartening and depressing from what was from the original two consoles.

For the first time ever, I am just not interested in seeing XB new reveals this E3 time period. And this at a time when we need the distraction the most.

@just1mohr: @just1mohr: naa I have an Xbox and I don't have game pass. But too put in too money terms and taking money out your wallet. Sony is not consumer friendly it's more money than Xbox. Either way cause the Sony pony hasn't dished out cloud gaming yet doesn't mean they're not. Im sure they'll have it on ps6 they're just late too the party with that. If I want too upgrade my ghost of tushima guess what I have too pay for that and it's not like 9.99 it's like 30 and like 40 if you don't have Playstation plus. Xbox has smart delivery it's one disk that will play the best version on what console you have. Xbox has triple the amount of enhanced games than Sony. If I want backwards compatibility oh guess what Playstation premium is way higher than game pass like quadruple than Xbox. Not too mention that they're games are way too short for 70 dollars it's in your head dude. Pay 70 dollars for a game that's done within 20 hours. They're both getting money out of you one way or the other. Will have too say Sony is worse. But I do agree I don't have none of those things on either console gamepass cloud gaming or Playstation premium don't need it don't want it glad its optional

@just1mohr: Spencer is saying that Xbox doesn't have to follow the competition to the letter to succeed, and they don't want to do it that. He never said Xbox is not striving to make great games. Xbox obviously does not want to hold 1st games hostage to the console platform.

Their games won't be restricted to physical and digital console SKUs. They don't seem interested in making a VR set or a portable. It is not a must that they make a slew of 3rd-person narrative adventures. As well, Xbox appears reluctant to buy high-profile 3rd part exclusives (maybe they should rethink that one).

The point of the business is to provide games & services while making optimal profit. The more money brought in under Xbox, the more investment that can be made in games (without being so reliant on MS). Hence, the ABK deal.

Xbox is doing a great job with the hardware and services. The game quality (or predictable, disaster-free development cadence) is what they need to nail down better.

Sony took the teen & up market. Nintendo eventually sidestepped and concentrated on the 3rd trimester to teen market. Sony and MS markets overlap significantly. Sony routinely pays to have Xbox excluded from 3rd party releases. Their fans go at it in comments sections.

Now, consider a fourth entrance in the console market. The company would have to be MS-class. They would need a great core library, exclusive whether bought or developed. Still, they would have no chance. Those games don't come around anymore and certainly not from one source. Technology has reached a point where so much has been done before and little impresses.

I understand all that & it may be true, but I don't agree with it. If they want to be more to people then they need to drop the console altogether and focus on PC & mobile, which is where I won't be for the most part!

It is not like this is rocket science and xb can't figure it out. Problem is that they DON'T want to figure it out. They don't want to give you the best next gen game, they rather put something halfheartedly on XB and make you happy that you didn't pay for that crap and keep on paying for gamepASS.

They want to charge you indefinitely for online that was free before, yup sounds like M$.

@just1mohr: quite honestly if gamepass somehow someway did give incentives for good game dev, I would love to pay 15 bucks a month to satisify my gaming desires. hell, id pay 50 bucks. 150 bucks even. but it will never ever work. Netflix movies are the worst movies on Netflix. All the good movies are non netflix, and they get there LATE - long after the actual good movie dev incentive: fulll price cinema.

After reading this interview, here are my thoughts.

It all falls down to having great GAMES! That's always a fact as to what goes for your system is what console gamers buy the console to play that game on it. Great games sure but, to hinge the success of Xbox solely on Starfield isn't correct. Phil Spencer is right regarding Xbox One being a colossus failure that almost killed the Xbox brand and at least he understands this but not the few die-hard Xbox fans. It will take constant success to rebuild the brand and back it up but that's gonna take months or years if they're lucky to release quality good games and people wonder why Xbox games never get's nominated on the VGA, just Nintendo/Sony for the past decades, and I for one still yarn to see MS get one of their games nominated for GOTY. Anyway, Redfall was a disaster. Time to learn from it and move on.

If Starfield isn't ready, it's not ready, so delay it if you must, and trust me, gamers will appreciate a good launch game should it never needs delaying

I'm a PC gamer first & foremost. Reading this interview tells me why MS is really pushing supporting PC as Phil knows its where the money is but he also needs to understand PC gamers want good quality games and they better run smooth and have no BS either. This interview is really gonna hurt die-hard Xbox fans for sure but I think he handle the situation well IMO.

Sounds like a loser. And the "as many platforms as possible" bs means that true next gen games are going to be a rarity. Which makes our XSX's essentially display boxes. This loser needs to be ousted. Why would Bethesda tie themselves to such a sinking ship?

@BxMxS2004: Because Bethesda's stock holders and Board of Directors wanted to make large sums of money.

This is a business, dude. Sure, there are great artists slaving away at every studio, but the decisions as to who "gets tied" to whom are all about the almighty investors and their bank accounts. Sad, but true.

Tired of the excuses. A strong library of compelling first-party games is EVERYTHING. There is no better way to build respect and gain attention from gamers over time - especially when these are games you build yourselves instead of buying entire publishers that would have put these games out anyway, and on other platforms additionally.

And no company out there has more resources to do this than Microsoft.

@Sushiglutton: Spencer is correct, when framing it from this here on. Xbox's best bet was to springboard off of 360 and keep pushing like they are now. Only they had Mattrick at the helm and did not have backing from MS the way they do now. MS should have pushed to acquire Remedy, Bioware, Pandemic, (and maybe even Bethesda) back then (for starters).

Maybe then Xbox could have "won" America or North America. Internationally, they have no chance. But yes, despite selling less consoles, they would sell far more consoles, and be better regarded game-wise.

Not to so they can't fight back now. Spencer isn't saying that either. Just that it will be very difficult and take generations. Also, they won't "win" trying to do the same thing as Playstation.

@theduckofdeath: no i think hes insightful and correct for short term money making, but thats unfortunate. The best thing for xbox in a 10 year perspective is simply to out-game every other console based on the VAST sums of cash MS sits on. That's a very negative statement from Phil. If I had an Xbox I'd be worried and as a PS5 owner it doesn't entice me to buy an Xbox. Phil is wrong, Xbox need more games and a lot more of them to survive and to get people to buy one. Services is not what people buy a console for. I think Xbox needs a new CEO. He's running the Xbox platform into the ground.

im so fkng pro xbox its insane. its american. its bro. its sports focused. i love all of that. also, this gen they have the best-looking actual consoles by a mile.

but the reality is that xbox ui, controller and most 1st party games makes it feel like a low budget option in comp to ps5.

Gamepass isn't a good thing for anyone in the long run. The incentives slaughter creativity and quality. It's Netflix, its IG. its scrollable, deletable, filler content.

Make xbox a premium brand and service for people who are willing to pay top dollar for top quality and the rest will follow.

You know, I figured that's how it's presented, even though that's silly because it doesn't really have that much more of anything than any other console and there is certainly nothing "sporty" about a nerd box, so I wasn't really sure if that is how the Xbox is actually perceived. Thanks for confirming.

He's full of it, of course; his company has spent billions upon billions buying up developers because the consumers want games. Until those games arrive he's going to continue saying whiny crap like this "Boohoo Sony sued us and the Brits won't let us buy Activision" nonsense. In a few short years XBox is going to have a lot of killer exclusives and this guy (or his replacement) will be making statements like "At the end of the day, it's about the games."

I don't wish anyone to fail or any of the big 3 to fail because if any one of them fail its gonna have a drastic effect on the other 2 remaining and its gonna extreme pressure to a point that they can't do anything to satisfy every type of gamer. A good Xbox also means a Good Nintendo and a Good Sony.

@mareo147: Sega failed and Nintendo experienced a major decline at roughly the same time. Had no negative impact on Playstation whatsoever. In fact, that was a golden era.

I'm not gonna lie Xbox and Phil need to get it together and bring in the quality level of games and exclusives just how they did it in the OG and 360 eras. But seeing Phil being this stressed and sad, is also making me feel sad for the brand and Phil and what the whole team at Xbox is going through now.
