There Is No World Where Starfield Is So Good People Sell Their PS5 And Move To Xbox, Phil Spencer Says

"We are not in the business of out-consoling Sony or out-consoling Nintendo."

Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer has commented on the battle between Microsoft and rivals Sony and Nintendo, saying Xbox sits in third place and the idea that Microsoft could just make better games to gain marketshare doesn't hold up. Spencer said even if Starfield is the best game in the history of the world, that wouldn't be enough to help Xbox overtake PlayStation.

Speaking to Kinda Funny, Spencer said Microsoft's goal is not to "out-console" Sony or Nintendo in terms of sales. Unfortunately for Microsoft, it lost the sales race in the Xbox One/PS4 generation, and the company has no hope of making it back to No. 1 by console sales alone, Spencer said.

"We are not in the business of out-consoling Sony or out-consoling Nintendo. There isn't really a great solution or win for us. And I know that will upset a ton of people. But the truth of the matter is that when you're third place in a console marketplace and the top two players are as strong as they are and in certain cases have a discrete focus on doing deals and other things that will--that make being Xbox hard for us as a team--our vision is everyone on console has a great experience and they feel like a first-class citizen," Spencer said.

"I see commentary out there--'If you just build great games, everything will turn around.' It's just not true [that] if we go off and build great games, all of a sudden you're going to see console share shift in some dramatic way. We lost the worst generation to lose in the Xbox One generation, where everybody built their digital library of games. 90% of the people every year who walk into a retailer to buy a console are already a member of one of the three ecosystems. Their digital library is there."

Given that people's gaming libraries are now made up significantly of digital games that move with them to new machines, the era of new console generations marking a clear line in the sand have ended. People can now more seamlessly shift from platform to platform, at least within the same family, which makes it so difficult to convince people to switch. Even if Starfield is the best game ever, that won't be enough for Xbox to overtake Sony, Spencer said.

"I see a lot of pundits out there who kind of want to go back to the time where we all had cartridges and discs and every new generation was a clean slate. And you could switch the whole console share. That is just not the world that we are in today. There is no world where Starfield is an 11/10 and people start selling their PS5s. That's not going to happen," Spencer said.

So what does Microsoft do, then? Spencer said the company has a "unique vision" in the marketplace where it doesn't focus exclusively on a console platform. Instead, Microsoft is building an infrastructure that supports games across devices, including phones and tablets through streaming. In short, Microsoft wants to make games available on as many platforms as possible to help reach the widest possible audience, Spencer said.

"The console is the core of the Xbox brand, no doubt, so we will stay focused on making sure that console experience is awesome. Some people want to hold us up and believe we are a 'better green version of what the blue guys do,' and I'm just going to say, 'There is not a win for Xbox in staying in the wake of somebody else.' We have to go off and do our own thing," Spencer said.

The PS5 is nearing 40 million systems sold since 2020, while the Switch has sold more than 122 million units. Microsoft, for its part, does not announce Xbox sales numbers.

In other news, Spencer recently reacted to Redfall's poor reviews and explained what went wrong.

I would settle for just making great games. I couldn't care less how much one console outsells another. Microsoft should stop trying to please the haters because they don't want to be pleased. They just want to hate. Microsoft takes a lead in the development of a game, people scream and say you're stifling the devs creativity. Microsoft takes a hands off approach with their devs and people scream and say give someone enough rope and they'll hang themselves and end up with crap like Redfall. They just can't win and they should stop trying and just concentrate on making high quality games rather than trying to increase the speed and number of games they put out. When people start calling you the NETFLIX of gaming, there's a problem. I don't know what's changed in the last few years but they haven't put out a decent game in ages except Forza and Flight Simulator. Something is seriously broken and they need to fix it. I usually by the next generation of Xbox within days of release if I can find one. I still haven't decided when or even if I'm going to get an XsX. Maybe if Starfield or Elder Scrolls is as good as Skyrim, I'll finally get one. Maybe.

@bdrtfm: in fairness, this isn't just a Microsoft problem. Everyone has been expanding subscriptions and gaas and hiking up the price, and suits have been ballooning production costs, making fewer people willing to risk new IPs. Microsoft is just the poster boy for it right now

We actually have a good idea. I'd explain it to you and/or provide you with a link, but I know you'll ignore me because slandering me is your coping mechanism for learning I was right about everything that happened with the merger approval.

Gotta say, I kinda disagree with Phil here. Making great games consistently will absolutely sell xboxes and boost the brand. People were ready to fall over for Halo--they boofed it. People were willing to give redfall a try--it sucks. Just get it right 2 or 3 times in a row and people will gain confidence and the winds will shift. And then keep delivering. Xbox 360 days were a great time for Xbox because of a burgeoning indie market in support of numerous great exclusives. Do that again and you'll do fine. But acting like you can't compete by making great games is stupid as hell. When's the last time Xbox released a real powerhouse exclusive? I literally can't remember.

The whole gamepass thing felt great when it was in support of an xbox-specific identity, but without that identity it just feels like a bunch of great infrastructure supporting itself. I'm seeing a bunch of really great, well-designed scaffolding here. Xbox needs to knuckle up and pump out some really awesome exclusives.

The whole, "Just get really big and don't think too hard" is really thin, man.

You will lose, HARD, if gamepass is your best and only thrust.

Shame 'cause Xbox got it so RIGHT on backwards compat. Xbox has set the table beautifully, but there's no damn meal.

If this guy was as good at making the console successful as he is at making excuses it would be a great console.

We seen that even after the poor PS3 launch and many games with technical issues ,the majority of PS fans didnt ran at stores to buy a X360.
Now with Sony mostly delivering good games, there is even less reasons to switch...maybe buying an Xbox as a 2nd console for Starfield,Elder Scroll?
And they even dont have to...sub to GP on pc or soon on any modern TV with a GP app will do it to.

Phil is officially DELUSIONAL. I currently have most platforms except an XSX. It's the first gen I didn't get one. If they release great games, it doesn't mean I have to sell my ps5 to get an Xbox 🤷. Great games sell great numbers and high revenue.... Xb360, switch, ps4/5 are proof of that. It doesn't mean you have to win in consoles sold but for sure you'll have more if there's consistency in great 1st party exclusives.

@pcps4xb: Spencer is not saying Xbox isn't aiming to make great games. He's saying in their place (and any other platform holder that want to enter the fray), it is better for them not to tie their exclusives to the console.

Additionally, a perfect Starfield, even 3 perfect "Starfields" is not going to make them "beat" (see more consoles in the generation) Sony or Nintendo internationally. They don't have to be laser focused on 3rd person teacher-disciple narrative adventures.

Series X is a nice console.

but MS's game division is GARBAGE.

Sony: Ghost of Tsushima, Bloodborne, Horizon, Spiderman, Uncharted, The Last of Us, Ratchet & Clank, FFXVI, GOD OF WAR

MS: Uhhhh..... when was the last good Gears of War? When was the last good Halo? Oh... they have Forza... so thats ONE! What else they got? Where is Fable? Wtf is wrong with Starfield that it just gets delay after delay?

I used to be optimistic about MS getting Activision / Blizzard.... but as bad as Activision has killed Blizzard... I now fear that MS will put the nail in the coffin.

Look Phil is trying to be nice. Yes they will not sell the PS5 but players will stream Starfield and now you know the secret weapon of Xbox - every body already have an Xbox you just stream it.

My question is....where Xbox's ghost of tsushima? Xbox's resident evil? Xbox's metal gear? Xbox's needs innovative titles. A sonic the hedgehog, a really awesome character young people can get behind. Nintendo has Zelda, Mario. Wheres xbox's zelda and mario?

@nyran125tk: The last Xbox had Quantum Break, a game that was hit with the "hate" trend... Then Control gets popular when its not even 1/2 of the game QB was.

@nyran125tk: Xbox's Resident Evil is, well, Resident Evil. 'Cause it's multiplat.

And I can think of games that would answer your question, but here's the rub: it seems like Xbox's market generally consists of gamers that don't care for any of those games. They only seem to care about racers and online shooters. And given how many of them ACT around here, that's not entirely surprising. A great many of them often state how Xboxes are always sold out where they live...which is generally the southern/central US. Guns and cars? Explains a lot.

@sladakrobot: You won't find any links but, probably from Video Game Magazines which cover more interviews in that era as Video Game Magazines were still a thing.

if you care so much, why make Bethesda titles exclusive?

This article pretty much cements why Xbox is failing, and we already know the reason because multiple departures from their top studios have told us: Xbox has a management problem, and you know what they always say, it starts at the top. Phil refusing to identify the REAL reason and blaming their competitors for unscrupulous practices paints him as a sore loser. MS has more than enough influence, resources, and talent to produce top titles-they did it during the early 360 generation. But for some reason, every time those top franchises became first party titles, they got worse. And that has absolutely nothing to do with Nintendo or Playstation.

At this point, Phil is just unwilling to accept Xbox's failures, and decline is always the result of such things. I'd say he needs to go, but I'm pretty sure he's not really in charge NOW.

@Barighm: You're right that it starts at the top, but, really, the top at MS isn't Phil, it's Satya Nadella, who, from day one of taking over as CEO has been luke warm on games. He never, ever, was a champion of games like prior leadership of the company. Hell, there were even rumors in the early part of his tenure that he would spin XBox off, sell the brand.

I think Phil really is a gung ho champion of gaming at heart, but he isn't at a game company, or even a company that has leadership that prioritizes games. Sony and Nintendo rely far more on games, console sales and entertainment dollars than MS does and, the longer Nadella is at the helm at MS, the less gaming will be a part of MS's overall strategy, and, let's remember, MS is HUGE, far bigger than just games.

I think had Ballmer stayed put, XBox (and Phil) would be in a different place saying different stuff. I think poor Phil misses Ballmer every day of his life, but, that's business, right?

@Barighm: yeah Microsoft is in a bad spot I admit but it isn't failing. Yeah they need better quality exclusives not quantity. But the series x is better than Xbox one generation I can tell you that. When they announced the always online for Xbox one and that you couldn't share games. Remember even Sony made fun of it and had that funny sharing commercial. You could buy an Xbox one anywhere on release and wasn't hard too get at all. That was way worse than the series x. Xbox one didn't start off great. That's failing and if that's worse than this newest generation they're not failing. Yeah they could be better right now they need more quality games but it isn't failing, can't be any worse than Xbox one in the beginning. But yeah they could do better and hopefully they will. Perfect dark zero, a new Xbox exclusive made from ex naughty dog team, contraband which supposedly has graphics like uncharted. But who knows when these games will come out like 2029 lol.

@bthegamer: Maybe "failing" wasn't the right term since you're right MS ventures don't really fail so much as they give up on it, and there is no reason for MS to give up on it because software can always be baked into Windows-EVERYTHING becomes a part of Windows eventually-but it's more they're failing in EXECUTION rather than just outright failing.

@Barighm: I mean they're in last behind Nintendo and Playstation and struggling with games right now. But they still have millions of gamers and they still make a killing. It's not successful like the other two buy they still make money. Just look at population itself it keeps growing. Meaning it'll be hard too fail on just of how much people are in the world. Shoot all 3 companies can just make it in accessories and microtrantactions in games itself lol you know they get a percentage. Even though they're struggling right now and in last place they still make a killing. What they need too do is change thier strategy and invest into good development teams. Like I don't mind Bethesda but cmon really. I never really played a Bethesda game and was like dang that game is one of my favorites this year or all time. I would of got Capcom or just a smaller studio like Playstation has. Bethesda is on quantity not quality. I've never been blown away by thier games they just need too make smarter decisions.
