Ubisoft crowns new Prince of Persia

"New chapter" in acrobatic action adventure series headed to 360, PS3, PC this holiday; separate edition also planned for DS.

As one of Ubisoft's best-known, not to mention best-selling, franchises, Jordan Mechner's Prince of Persia series was a shoo-in to return despite 2005's billed conclusion to the Sands of Time trilogy, The Two Thrones. In January, Ubisoft gave first wind of a new game in any official capacity, saying as part of its third-quarter financial report that Prince of Persia would bound to new ledges sometime during the publisher's 2008-09 fiscal year.

Today, Ubisoft officially confirmed Prince of Persia for a holiday 2008 release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Details on the Ubisoft Montreal-developed game are light, but Ubisoft has said the game will be "a new chapter" in the franchise that tinkers with traditional action adventure gameplay. The publisher also said the game will introduce a new illustrative art style to the series. A separate version featuring "an entirely new storyline and new characters" is also in the works for the Nintendo DS.

Noticeably absent from today's announcement was a subtitle for the new Prince of Persia game. When rumors first surfaced of a new game in the franchise in October, the mysterious gaming industry blogger Surfer Girl pegged the game's surname as Ghosts of the Past. However, Surfer Girl was under the impression that the game, which she said would forgo "the dark edginess of the last two titles in favor a fantastical cross between The Sands of Time, Ico, and Zelda," would also appear on the Wii.

A second subtitle for the game surfaced last week. First spotted by Trademork, Prince of Persia Prodigy turned up in the United States Patent and Trademark Office's online database. However, the application did not reveal which platforms the game would appear on.

Nice, Ill be watching out for this one. And LincolnSixEcho's right: Splinter cell conviction needs to come out soon. OXM said thats its been delayed until 2009 though, since ubisoft decided to change the entire game ...

Uh, steve4200. The Playstation came out in the U.S. in September 1995 and in Japan in December 1994. And for the first three years , the Sega Saturn was the dominate console in Japan. Not the PSone. Plus while I can't stand Nintendo fanboys(most of them under 18) I have to say your comment was irrelavant. And santiagochile and other Wii fanboys. The game will probably not appear on Wii because it wouldn't look any different from a PS2 version of the game. And while you argue about graphics not making a game, sometimes they do and people do care about how good a good looks.

I'm looking forward to the next chapter in the series. I wish UbiSoft would put out the new Splinter Cell. I thought it was supposed to be out by now.

as long as they keep the acrobatics and the enviromental puzzles, i'm content, let them go as original as they want, if they believe it will make a great game. i love you, Ubisoft! and steve4200...i have no issues with the PS3 (or care about the console war, at that), but the playstation didn't come out until 1994, so number 1 gaming company for 17 years is a little un-mathematical...

@ steve4200 - You're a really big PS3 fan boy aren't you? Yeah PS2 was amazing, but just admit, they messed up with PS3.

i think they should keep the same "emo" character . It gives a better look of how he has gone through so much trouble in his life and adds more to the story.i know my older brother played the third one and the whole dark tortured character look made him want to play the other two. I honestly just want ehm to add a graphic up date and add keep the rest the same as for fighting. Also add some more acrobatic moves and a good sound track of rock music if they stick with the badish Prince. as afr as title i hink it should stay prince of persia ghost of the past and not king of persia like Viral-venom13 said. In the end of the last one he had nothing going for him if i remember correctly. So it should stay prince of persia and keep the same prince and just bring back the sand guys from SoT and leav it to a teen level. also make a new environment that attracts your attention like wow this is awesome.

If the description given in the article is correct then I look forward to playing The Prince of Persia series again. I am not interested in another title that embraces the dark, "edgy" image of the last 3. I did not mind the violence, I did mind the other artistic touches that made it feel dated and nothing like the stories that inspired it.

I can't wait for that, always have been a fan of PoP SoT trilogy. Let's hope it can keep up wih the great quality of that trilogy. I wonder if it's going to use Assassin's Creed engine - if only they do, this will be very interesting thing to see.

I do hope its a lot like Assassin's Creed, graphic-wise. It is still one of the most breathtaking game I've played in terms of visuals and graphic. I would like to see PoP to be a combine Assassin's Creed and God of War game, though not as graphic. Also no bad and good side, just plain action and good storytelling.

hope its a non stelth Assassins Creed, a total balls out action adventure game whit awesome combat more in the Ninja Gaiden, God Of War, Devil May Cry direction. A more combo driven combat system that is. Also hope that they ditch the baditude and go more for a gritty Sands Of Time or something like that, meaning more raw action whitout a Emo character.

I hope they make the combat more like a mix of Assassins Creed (AC) and Ninja Gaiden 2, that would kick ass! The platforming like AC, and the exploration like PoP itself, and the puzzle solving like PoP: SoT, Tomb Raider, and Mist. I hope the game uses bright environments as well as dark ones.

@ AzureWing213 two thrones, did that, it took the best of sands and the best of warrior and created a amazing conclusion Warrior basically had a bad story topic: im hoping its a sequel series, not prequel....im not that much interested in the pre-PoP days

i have no problems with rated M games... but Sands of time was Teen, and it had the "magic" we're talking about. Once it went all head-slicing and stabbing on us in Warrior Within(rated M), it seemed like something was a little lost. I loved that combo system but I couldn't even be bothered to finish the game, I was probably sitting on the cusp of the end and I traded it back in. Hopefully, they shift their target audience back to a little younger, family-friendly side so they won't have to compete with Kratos and all the GTA guys...

The problem is they have to totally rework the engine - due to it having less graphic power, and also to make it friendly for the Wii controls That was the gamble Nintendo took with the Wii - strong 3rd party games but less decent ports of the other major titles due to the lack of power and weird control system

i dont understand why publishers dont develop for the wii sometimes. and often when they do it ends up being just a cheap port. Nintendo deserves some third party support after their great console and first party game sales

I really enjoyed the Sands of Time. But thought that the magic was lost with Warrior Within (I despised what Ubisoft did with that) and to an extent, The Two Thrones (though I mildly enjoyed that). So if this new PoP is like Sands of Time, then sign me up for sure!

It got pretty dark in the last two. The Prince was a raving, crazy-eyed, decapitating murderer. No wonder the team decided to brighten this one up. Mechner was probably like, "Hot damn, my boy's become a psychopath. Bring back the fantasy and wonderment."
