Ubisoft crowns new Prince of Persia

"New chapter" in acrobatic action adventure series headed to 360, PS3, PC this holiday; separate edition also planned for DS.

As one of Ubisoft's best-known, not to mention best-selling, franchises, Jordan Mechner's Prince of Persia series was a shoo-in to return despite 2005's billed conclusion to the Sands of Time trilogy, The Two Thrones. In January, Ubisoft gave first wind of a new game in any official capacity, saying as part of its third-quarter financial report that Prince of Persia would bound to new ledges sometime during the publisher's 2008-09 fiscal year.

Today, Ubisoft officially confirmed Prince of Persia for a holiday 2008 release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Details on the Ubisoft Montreal-developed game are light, but Ubisoft has said the game will be "a new chapter" in the franchise that tinkers with traditional action adventure gameplay. The publisher also said the game will introduce a new illustrative art style to the series. A separate version featuring "an entirely new storyline and new characters" is also in the works for the Nintendo DS.

Noticeably absent from today's announcement was a subtitle for the new Prince of Persia game. When rumors first surfaced of a new game in the franchise in October, the mysterious gaming industry blogger Surfer Girl pegged the game's surname as Ghosts of the Past. However, Surfer Girl was under the impression that the game, which she said would forgo "the dark edginess of the last two titles in favor a fantastical cross between The Sands of Time, Ico, and Zelda," would also appear on the Wii.

A second subtitle for the game surfaced last week. First spotted by Trademork, Prince of Persia Prodigy turned up in the United States Patent and Trademark Office's online database. However, the application did not reveal which platforms the game would appear on.

I would not call Ubisoft games "in general, really rubbish." No, in general Ubisoft is one of the safer bets we can count on, with big budget stuff that usually works well. There are publishers out there that really do churn out rubbish almost non-stop.

Vancha_15, I have no idea what you're talking about. Every Ubisoft (Montreal in particular) game I've played in the past few years has been fantastic. I'm sure this new Prince of Persia game will be no different.

@Link_86_1 I know I thought they would make it for the Wii aswell because when they originally hinted at a new Prince of Persia a couple of weeks ago they thought it would be for the Wii since they said they wanted to make it more Family Friendly.

vancha_15 After buying R6V2, i also think that ubisoft has gone to hell. Assassins Creed was pretty fun, and i am just hoping that PoP will be as well. As far as Tom Clancy games are concerned or any other shooter I will steer clear of the ubisoft brand

Viral-venom13 It hasn't been confirmed if it takes place before or after. Perhaps if it takes place after PoP: TT, then yes, that particular title would be suiting. But if it's before, well the article says it all. Where in the heck is the Wii version?

In my opinion if there ever was a name to have given this new game it should have been called "King of Persia." Reason being for this is because if it is indeed following the trilogy set forth by the previous 3 then it should be a no brainer to anyone who has played them that the Prince has now ascended to that of King status due to the death discovery of his father (King Sharaman) in "The 2 Thrones." The 2 Thrones in my opinion should have ended in that same similar style to how it did however it should have also showed the crowing of a new King to rule over Babylon which should have been the Prince. It sounds quriky and all but i feel that it would have been a very, very nice way to end the series all the while giving it a fresh start and new direction as it transitioned over from last gen consoles to the new ones!! The only twist that they could probably have substiuted for the prince not being king is probably that he had an older brother or something of which they never introduced as in the Sands of Time they did refer to the prince as "The youngest son of King Sharaman" so......i guess the speculation of the game continues!!
