Whore of the Orient branded 'racial vilification' by member of Chinese-Australian community

Chinese-Australian community member finds game's name offensive; intends to make formal complaint to Human Rights Commission.

Upcoming third-person action game Whore of the Orient has been labelled an "attempt to disgrace Chinese culture, history, and traditions" by a member of the Chinese-Australian community, according to a report by The Age.

No Caption Provided

The claim, from City of Monash Deputy Mayor Jieh-Yung Lo, alleges that the game, which has been at least partially funded by government body Screen New South Wales, is offensive and does a disservice to cultural relations. So much so, he believes, that he intends to make a complaint to the Australian Human Rights Commission, saying that the game's title constitutes racial vilification. Citing privacy laws, a spokesperson for the commission told GameSpot that it was unable to confirm whether a complaint had been lodged.

"It's the use of the word 'Orient', more even than the word 'whore', that is the issue," Lo explained. "The O-word is very similar to the N-word for African-American communities. It's a 19th-century racial-colonial conception, and it's especially painful for older people in the communities. That was a very bad time in China, and people don't want or need to have that dragged up."

"'The most shocking revelation is that [game developer] Team Bondi received A$200,000 from Screen New South Wales to develop the project," he said later in the article. "Australian institutions should be encouraged to fund projects and initiatives that cultivate mutual understanding and prosperity in the Australia-China relationship. We need to build greater trust and cultural understanding, rather than promote division and negativity."

Responding to queries from The Age, Screen NSW told the publication that its role is to fund projects, not to dictate the tone or themes tackled as part of artistic endeavours.

"Screen NSW does not proscribe subject matter to content creators, including titles, but makes its funding decisions based on the creative integrity of a project and the expertise of the funding applicants," a spokesperson said. "'Whore of the Orient' is an historical nickname for the city of Shanghai."

While Jieh-Yung Lo has called for a halt to the game's development, he also told The Age that the ideal solution "would be a change of title."

KMM Interactive Productions, the game development arm of Australian film company KMM (responsible for Mad Max and Happy Feet) purchased the game's intellectual property and asset rights in 2011 from Team Bondi, the developer responsible for L.A. Noire.

Last month, a brief video of the game showing third-person cover mechanics, melee combat, and gunplay was leaked online. The game is reportedly targeting a 2015 release.

And I'm sure Team Bondi's main goal was to "disgrace Chinese culture, history, and traditions".

Glad someone had the courage to speak out and be OFFENDED in these racially turbulent times.

Isn't it just a tad bit concerning how easily offended people get, even when no offense is meant?

While i personally don't appreciate people trying to do stuff like this, i don't think a title change would be too horrible- keep in mind that i'd much rather they just shut up and leave it alone, but i'd rather see this game get released then have some insane controversy stop it from reaching us xD

@Bahamut50 Where was the outrage when "Redneck Rampage" was released? Or hell, ANY of the modern-set Call of Duties/Medal of Honours/Battlefield games.

@DarkSaber2k @Bahamut50 There has ALWAYS been outrage and disapproval for Call of Battlefield Honour games. There's constantly controversy over shit like those, both in them being shitty games and in part because many do in fact voice objection to those kinds of games.

You'd think a human rights commission would have more important things to do. (Then again, if they don't, that would mean they've done their job pretty well.)

Whore of the Orient doesn't even refer to anyone's racial background, it's an old nickname for the city of Shanghai.

In a sense I guess calling the title racist would be like a disabled person in Nevada claiming that "what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" is an insult to people unable to walk.

That's hilarious. Suppressing art and free speech should do wonders for culture. There's neither going to be development, nor diversity, nor excellence without conflict. Incidentally, doing a disservice to culture, does a disservice to cultural relations. Admittedly, the culture of hysteria stands to gain from this. Not a very good culture, that one.

@SoulScribe @subrawk I'd still like to see it. There's something valuable in pointing out how profoundly ignorant some people can be, while pointing out the positive discourse that can take place in a controversial topic. Though, that might not be innately funny, they could work it into something.

Anyone that thinks that a word is offensive should be considered too stupid to vote let alone be a deputy mayor.

Words don't have power, it's the ideas expressed by words that have power.

@Afterthought_bt People want to suppress the expression of ideas by suppressing the use of the words that stand for certain ideas. If one condones the suppression of (certain) ideas, then suppressing the use of the corresponding words makes sense.

Additionally, by forcing others to refrain from using such words, they force them to make a symbolic - and nonetheless real - sacrifice.

Leaving aside the fact that as I am a liberal, I despise the idea of 'suppressing' any idea, and find anyone who wants to do so beneath contempt...

That only makes sense if it's impossible to refer to said idea without use of those words. So, just so long as they can't find other ways of saying the same idea, or make up new words to hold the same meaning, yeah, that makes sense.

Or, in other words, it makes utterly no sense whatsoever.

Also, no sacrifice is forced by forcing people to use other words. Name me one prejudice that has been stopped by limiting the use of certain words that people can use.

All you do by trying to censor words is make those words taboo, and thus give even more power to the people who do use those words.

But, hey, continue referring to Voldemort as You-Know-Who all you want - you're free to do that. Just like I'm free to think that people who do such, don't have the faintest idea as to what language, words, and ideas actually are.

@Afterthought_bt "That only makes sense if it's impossible to refer to said idea without use of those words."

You are mistaken. If there are words that succinctly convey an idea, words infused with history, interwoven with emotion and experience, then suppressing these words does hamper the powerful communication of ideas. Words are vessels, and some vessels are superior to others.

To avoid further confusion, I haven't endorsed censorship/suppression. As for "liberals" and free speech: liberalism has undergone transformations; the importance it assigns to free speech has changed over time. (Nevermind the distinction between classical liberalism and left-wing liberalism.)

"Also, no sacrifice is forced by forcing people to use other words."

If you consider freedom to be a positive value, and thus restriction a loss, then censorship imposes a sacrifice.

Being granted the power to censor words is to be given power over other people. You are not as mistaken here, however. The are several strands of power in this.

To say it is like the N-word is a joke! The N-word is known world wide to be a derogatory term, whereas here in England "Orient" is just part of common language. There are far far worse things the Human Rights court should be looking at....

@thekazumalord I think it's offensive because it represents the Western world's racist attitude towards the East in colonial times. Basically, it's a Eurocentric prejudice against the peoples of Asia and the Middle East and a simplification of a very diverse region with many different cultures and social traditions.

@CorkeyFord by that logic, a British person shouldn't be allowed to call the Scottish "Scotts" because that term represents the English racist attitude towards Scottland in the Middle Ages. Words change meaning along with the times. People just need to accept that the world has moved on, and then they need to do the same.

By the way, Europe is a very diverse region with many different cultures and social traditions. Just a matter of time until use of the word "Europe" is recognized as a human rights violation.

Weren't criminal people sent to Australia? That should make the word "Australia" an affront.

@CorkeyFord @l777l This is not directed against you, Ford. What I've read from you is valuable. You've merely given me an occasion to add something.

The simplification (and broadness) is an aspect common to both terms, "Europe", and "Orient". (By the way, I live in Europe, and am not aware of any derogatory connotation of the word "Orient".)

@l777l @CorkeyFord I'm certainly not saying that I think the title should be changed. I was just trying to explain that the negative and racist connotations of the term are the main reason for why some people find it offensive.

I'm a European and I'm definitely not offended. Then again, "European" was never, as far as I know, a racial slur and simply refers to the continent whereas "Orient" is a Western term applied to a culturally very different part of the world. But I suppose you're just being sarcastic...

@CorkeyFord @El_Giucu We have history because it's used to learn from past mistakes made by our ancestors. It shouldn't be used as a tool to reopen old wounds. Words are powerful because with human experience, the connotation of the word can be bound with emotional impact. It'd be great to take the negative value on all derogatory terms, but the reality is humans will never do it. Negative terms will evolve into new ones used to accommodate the times.
