Whore of the Orient branded 'racial vilification' by member of Chinese-Australian community

Chinese-Australian community member finds game's name offensive; intends to make formal complaint to Human Rights Commission.

Upcoming third-person action game Whore of the Orient has been labelled an "attempt to disgrace Chinese culture, history, and traditions" by a member of the Chinese-Australian community, according to a report by The Age.

No Caption Provided

The claim, from City of Monash Deputy Mayor Jieh-Yung Lo, alleges that the game, which has been at least partially funded by government body Screen New South Wales, is offensive and does a disservice to cultural relations. So much so, he believes, that he intends to make a complaint to the Australian Human Rights Commission, saying that the game's title constitutes racial vilification. Citing privacy laws, a spokesperson for the commission told GameSpot that it was unable to confirm whether a complaint had been lodged.

"It's the use of the word 'Orient', more even than the word 'whore', that is the issue," Lo explained. "The O-word is very similar to the N-word for African-American communities. It's a 19th-century racial-colonial conception, and it's especially painful for older people in the communities. That was a very bad time in China, and people don't want or need to have that dragged up."

"'The most shocking revelation is that [game developer] Team Bondi received A$200,000 from Screen New South Wales to develop the project," he said later in the article. "Australian institutions should be encouraged to fund projects and initiatives that cultivate mutual understanding and prosperity in the Australia-China relationship. We need to build greater trust and cultural understanding, rather than promote division and negativity."

Responding to queries from The Age, Screen NSW told the publication that its role is to fund projects, not to dictate the tone or themes tackled as part of artistic endeavours.

"Screen NSW does not proscribe subject matter to content creators, including titles, but makes its funding decisions based on the creative integrity of a project and the expertise of the funding applicants," a spokesperson said. "'Whore of the Orient' is an historical nickname for the city of Shanghai."

While Jieh-Yung Lo has called for a halt to the game's development, he also told The Age that the ideal solution "would be a change of title."

KMM Interactive Productions, the game development arm of Australian film company KMM (responsible for Mad Max and Happy Feet) purchased the game's intellectual property and asset rights in 2011 from Team Bondi, the developer responsible for L.A. Noire.

Last month, a brief video of the game showing third-person cover mechanics, melee combat, and gunplay was leaked online. The game is reportedly targeting a 2015 release.

@Renegade_Garrus @chrstoph22 I resent that. That implies the Chinese renege on treaties or contracts. I don't think anyone from the West is in a position to make that complaint.

I do agree Mr. Lo action is ill suited for a deputy mayor. Surely the bulk of his constituents can't care less what a few old people think of a video game that will reach only a limited number of young people.

@l777l My mom is not working "against my interest." She simply has own mind about what to cook. A restaurant that spits in their customer's food isn't targetting me specifically, but that practice is aimed at causing harm to either all customers, myself included, or some of my countrymen with the clear result of creating hostility in my society; that is working against my interest even if I'm not targetted specifically.

The line is not always clear cut. In the gray area I have to think about it carefully on a case to case basis.

@Unfallen_Satan @l777l "I consider anyone working against my interest to be my enemy"

So when your mom doesn't cook your favorite dish she's your enemy.

@l777l I consider anyone working against my interest to be my enemy, and Chinese abroad who actively harm their countrymen because of race hurt my interests. If they don't consider other races to be their countrymen, they have no business living abroad. Sometimes negative emotions are associated with "enemy." I don't feel ill toward my enemy.

@Renegade_Garrus Now that's better. You must share the name(s) of the restaurant where you worked so all white folks can know their enemy and all Chinese people can share in the shame.

Actually, I think Chinese people should go a step further and consider that restaurant their enemy too, as they harm the interests of other Chinese abroad.

@Renegade_Garrus No I didn't. Are you sure they didn't spit in your food and called you dog because they hated you?

Sometimes individuals confuse other's disregard for their own person with that of their people; I don't know, to make themselves feel more relevant, I guess. It's a common misconception.

One person should not be allowed to file this type of complaint on his own, and there is no evidence in the article that Mr. Lo's speaking on behalf of anyone else.

I also don't like the notion that "Australian institutions should be encouraged to fund projects and initiatives that cultivate mutual understanding and prosperity in the Australia-China relationship." That sounds like something the Chinese government would say, and even they don't actually expect it. Australian institutions should look out for Australians, including Chinese-Australian citizens, but whatever bothers the Chinese is up to the Chinese government to bring it up. Statements like this hurts all Chinese abroad.

@somatzu I disagree, but I am bothered that many people are more eager to remind others of their history than remembering their own. In this case, I think all Chinese should remember China's humiliation, the Whore of the Orient is but one accurate example, due to China's own weakness at the time. My ancestors didn't have the sitck to beat the West and the Japanese back or the balls to commit Senpaku when they lost. If they chose to get on their knees and take it, why should they bemoan others for remembering their time of glory with pride?

@Renegade_Garrus @Cao_Biao Chinese are not misogynistic. Out-dated conventional wisdom held that a family needed male heirs, a belief shared by almost all cultures of old, including Europeans. Before stringent population control, daughters are loved or married off to gain influence or both.

Yes, the conflict between desire for male heir and the One Child Policy has led to aborting female fetus and new-born abandonment, though few instances of murdering a newborn. Sexism over millennia is hard to eradicate; I think the Chinese have come a long way in just a few decades, especially being relatively backward for much of that time.

Due to fewer female than male today, girl power is becoming a reality for cities and, however slowly, the country.

@Renegade_Garrus @Cao_Biao It's possible to differentiate. One does not have to defend abortions in order to defend other elements of a given culture.

Note that the ancient Greeks and Romans had slaves, that the American settlers eradicated Native Americans, and so forth with other peoples.

Not IMO but killing a child because it is a female is pretty savage by any normal standards. Not to mention they use children as slave labor.

@Cao_Biao "... being racist yourselves while deflecting the issue away just proves the gaming community is still immature."

As diluted as the term "racist" (the same goes for "sexist") has become, it's difficult to tell what and how much exactly you deem racist. Regardless, the presence of some "racist" statements does not mean that an entire community is immature.

I can understand his reaction. Though, I get the impression that his reaction is based entirely on the title and not at all on the context of the content to the game. I'm not saying I have any more information than he does, but offensive doesn't have to be done poorly. If this game approaches the cultural issues that the title invokes, then it has potential to serve as a valuable piece of art. Thus, why it's foolish to attempt censorship. It's far too easy to base these sorts of decisions on something offending you, which would absolutely be the wrong reason to censor something - that's why censorship is a flawed concept. Offensive isn't destructive, in fact offensive - being offended - forces us to think, it breeds discourse, and that's a great thing. It's recklessness that is destructive, and the two are often too closely related to tell apart.
