Whore of the Orient branded 'racial vilification' by member of Chinese-Australian community

Chinese-Australian community member finds game's name offensive; intends to make formal complaint to Human Rights Commission.

Upcoming third-person action game Whore of the Orient has been labelled an "attempt to disgrace Chinese culture, history, and traditions" by a member of the Chinese-Australian community, according to a report by The Age.

No Caption Provided

The claim, from City of Monash Deputy Mayor Jieh-Yung Lo, alleges that the game, which has been at least partially funded by government body Screen New South Wales, is offensive and does a disservice to cultural relations. So much so, he believes, that he intends to make a complaint to the Australian Human Rights Commission, saying that the game's title constitutes racial vilification. Citing privacy laws, a spokesperson for the commission told GameSpot that it was unable to confirm whether a complaint had been lodged.

"It's the use of the word 'Orient', more even than the word 'whore', that is the issue," Lo explained. "The O-word is very similar to the N-word for African-American communities. It's a 19th-century racial-colonial conception, and it's especially painful for older people in the communities. That was a very bad time in China, and people don't want or need to have that dragged up."

"'The most shocking revelation is that [game developer] Team Bondi received A$200,000 from Screen New South Wales to develop the project," he said later in the article. "Australian institutions should be encouraged to fund projects and initiatives that cultivate mutual understanding and prosperity in the Australia-China relationship. We need to build greater trust and cultural understanding, rather than promote division and negativity."

Responding to queries from The Age, Screen NSW told the publication that its role is to fund projects, not to dictate the tone or themes tackled as part of artistic endeavours.

"Screen NSW does not proscribe subject matter to content creators, including titles, but makes its funding decisions based on the creative integrity of a project and the expertise of the funding applicants," a spokesperson said. "'Whore of the Orient' is an historical nickname for the city of Shanghai."

While Jieh-Yung Lo has called for a halt to the game's development, he also told The Age that the ideal solution "would be a change of title."

KMM Interactive Productions, the game development arm of Australian film company KMM (responsible for Mad Max and Happy Feet) purchased the game's intellectual property and asset rights in 2011 from Team Bondi, the developer responsible for L.A. Noire.

Last month, a brief video of the game showing third-person cover mechanics, melee combat, and gunplay was leaked online. The game is reportedly targeting a 2015 release.

@Renegade_Garrus yes, there are fewer and fewer racists in developed countries. In some poor countries, however, people get very racist, so I think you could met each other and stay happily ever after.

By that logic, the Scottish should be offended when an Englishman calls them "Scotts." Because that was used as a derogatory term in the 19th century and further back.

In fact, we Americans should be offended when anyone calls us American because some people use it as a derogatory term to us. Let's ban ALL the words to prevent hypersensitive individuals from ever getting offended!

Or... execute all the hypersensitive ones. I prefer this option.

Yes, people who aren't East Asian, calling someone oriental or from the orient is a derogatory statement. It's a term used to describe objects not people. Now you know. I only learned of this 10 years ago from someone who took a Asian studies course. The end.

This title is so irresponsible and teenagerish it should be ruled out just for being that stupid. It's like "OH MAN a bad word MAN look it sounds so ill-behaved THAT'S SO COOL".

People should get a life, get laid and grow up. And do their homework if they're not really into spending their life in crappy jobs.

So a Chinese-Australian community member, from the same country that eats cats and dogs, executes people for almost nothing and used to kill newborn baby girls, is going to make a formal complaint to the Human Rights Commission because of a game title.

Oh the irony.

@Gbullet 1. Cats and dogs are animals. Nothing wrong in eating them, you are the one being Xenophobic about that.

2. China does execute a lot of people but isn't for nothing. I will admit they get flack(rightly) for the amount of corruption in their legal system, which can lead to miscarriages of justice. If you go by percentages America kills just a little less people.

3. The government didn't kill newborn baby girls. It was crazy people who stick to a old tradition that "only men can provide for a family".

4. Chinese-Australian, means the guy is Australian with Chinese heritage. He isn't from China.

The more you know.

@Gbullet Was there some news report of a Chinese department of female infanticide that I missed? Infanticide is a crime in China as anywhere in the West, but such crimes are commited in China as anywhere else.

Not many Chinese eat cats, I can't argue. Dog meat is a delicacy in parts of China. Animal "rights" is novel if it even exists there, but I don't think anyone should mistake "animal rights" with human rights.

I am rather proud of China's willingness to execute people. I question the rehabilitative value of long term incarcerations; I actually think life-in-prison is more cruel and usual. I know murder and drug trafficking of certain degree carry mandatory death penalty, but I don't know what you consider as "for nothing." If you are thinking of political prisoners, they are usually sent to labor camps, and yes, I do consider that human right violations.

@Gbullet Oh the ignorance.

These are Chinese-Australians, not Chinese. That means they are ethnically Chinese, but nationally Australian. Perhaps they left China some generations ago to part with certain cultural practices they didn't like. Or they wanted to find a better place to live. You are blaming a group of people based on a stereotype that occurs somewhere else. That's pretty much racism and prejudice.

That's like blaming an American-German for the atrocities of the Nazis.

@Oogazi you cant say he has cultural beliefs when he has not mentioned anything at all about the word 'Orient' being used in the names of Restaurants in the same city he lives in....how can he be fine with that but not with the game using the word?

@Dantat @LesserAngel @chrstoph22 @Oogazi I get what your saying, it was by pure luck that early US soldiers decided to adopt the word Yankee as their own as fast as they did, so it didn't get much of a chance to grow into anything more 'powerful'.

However, it doesn't change the fact that it started out as an pejorative, but no longer is used as such in most places. I look at Orient the same way, because I have never seen the word used as such. By making such a big deal out of it, the guy is only giving more power to the word's use as a derogatory term.

Somewhat. The term wasn't used to exert racial dominance / superiority over said minority. In modern times, when we should be more open minded and less racist.. this makes the difference.

But let's consider an example.. let's say the Mongols were able to conquer Europe and enslave everyone. And let's imagine that they called all Caucasians a term like Yankee to degrade them. Then fast-forward to current times (mongols no longer there). You'd be pretty dang sure people would be offended if the word Yankee was used against Caucasians.

Now, my example definitely applies to the word "n*gger." The history of the word "Oriental" may be less known. But essentially, Asians came to the US in the 19th century hearing stories of wealth.. rather they encountered extreme racism and slave like conditions when they got here.

@Dantat @chrstoph22 @Oogazi The word Yankee was also used as a derogatory word for Americans, yet it's used today in a non-offensive (as well as offensive in someplaces to be fair) manner, yet I have yet to hear about anyone in the US throwing a fit about it. If people keep being offended by every little word, they're going to forget to try and enjoy life.

@chrstoph22 @Oogazi To you, It seems like he is making something out of nothing because you are clearly someone who doesn't know the history / racial connotations of the term "oriental."

The term was used to demean Chinese and Japanese workers similar to how "n*gger" was used to demean blacks in our past history.

I don't know any Asians (at least any who know any history) would call themselves orientals. And the Orient Express? The railway in Europe? What does that have to do with the Chinese.

@Oogazi Accept that he is making something out of nothing when there is a large amount of the use of the word 'Orient' which is the ONLY thing he is not happy about....not the context of the game just the WORD....there are MANY examples of the word but nobody has said a thing about it....why not? Why has the chinese government allowed the Orient Express all these years? Why has that not had a name change?

@chrstoph22 @Oogazi It doesn't matter if he was trying to make himself look good, if he's raising awareness for an issue that is wrong, it still wrong regardless of the initial intention. How about this for a question - who doesn't do that?

Also, some African-Americans use the n-word to refer to each other, doesn't mean the majority of the African-American population approve of it. I could imagine Martin Luther King not being too happy about it either.

Let's stop using individual examples as representative of the group. That's where racism starts.
