This thread of covers games that we don't want to overlook, as collectors. This covers games for systems currently available. Simply put these are games that are available now that should not be overlooked but probably are. All of these games will have to at least have to be Overlooked to be included, but some have extra collectibility based on other factors

Although I don't have any games to contribute at this point, I just wanted to say I really like the idea behind this thread.  I will be watching it closely! (Particularly because I will probably be stuck in last-gen for the foreseeable future.)

Edit: Now that I think of it, a "Buried Treasure" thread should probably be a sticky-topic in this forum.  Where any currently in-production game (of any system or generation) that isn't getting the recognition, publicity, or production numbers it deserves can be listed.  That way we can pick up our copies before they become hard-to-find items.

Lately it has been real easy to get distracted with all the news (and for some first-hand experience) surrounding the Wii and PS3 (and Gears of War). So I thought I'd start a thread of games that we don't want to overlook, as collectors, from what I guess is now the last generation. Here are some I have added to my wishlist:

The Red Star - PS2 XBOX (top down shooter)

I want that game more then anything but I don't want to obtain the full version illeagally and it never saw a retail release because of the company going under... it's not top down... it's like contra, it has some top down in it but mostly it's side scrolling and 3 player.

Xyanide - Xbox (Gmsnpr lauded this shooter in a blog earlier this year - Currently $19.99 at Amazon)

ditto.

Snoopy vs. The Red Baron - PS2 (Namco-Bandai cartoon shooter)

it's a snoopy game, those are always rare.

Yoshi's Island DS - DS (duh!)

why?

Please add games you think some members might otherwise miss out on.

aspro73

I'd say games like Gladius and RLH that need sequels so bad that will never be recieved...

Sorry, I don't know how to do the whole pretty linky thing, and I'm too lazy to look it up right now, but....

Circus Maximus-Xbox

Wait!!! Hear me out!!  This game is surprisingly fun.  It's chariot racing (in case you didn't know).  It's pretty old, toward the beginning of the Xbox life cycle.  I bought it on a whim one day while visiting my parents in Rockford.  I haven't seen it in quite awhile though.  It's completely different and well worth a play, if you haven't already.

I had that one for a while, and it's not bad, especially for a game that you can dredge up for

EDIT: less that $10.  When you wipe out in a chariot, you really wipe out.

Gamespot is really glitching up for me.  This is the fifth post of mine to come out substantially different than it was written.

Waffle, Red Star is coming out soon for the XBOX and PS2 (I will let you know when this is confirmed with XS Games who bought the rights from Acclaim - I have a call into them).  I was oversimplifying it calling it a top down shooter, it does have both top down and side-scrolling levels.  I am highlighting Yoshi because I think it is being mostly overlooked. But hey, let's not focus on my picks, there has to be some treasure out there that we can all benefit from knowing about.

WHA!? really?! I loved that game and was devestated when it got cancelled... I had a 3 player-2 level demo... and had since played and beaten the full game on an ex-co-workers modded XBOX... I'm frickin excited....

To the end of determining what games are rare, are there any websites that catalog production numbers for games (both current and OOP)?

NPD catalogs sales numbers, but I think production numbers are always a little shadowy.  You hear snippets once in a while, like "there were 20,000 copies of Panzer Dragoon Saga pressed," but it's usually unconfirmed (I've also heard 10k and 5k).  I once tried to find out from Sega how many CDX consoles they produced after some jokers on eBay were advertising that there were only 500 made, but it was a fruitless effort.  I haven't found a source like what you're describing, though I've looked.   If you find one, please be sure to call our attention to it.

Pardon my ignorance, gmsnpr.  NPD?

If I had to make a guess, I would say that Scurge: Hive for DS and GBA would classify as "Buried Treasure".  It's a great little game that plays like an isometric Metroid.  And it doesn't appear to be getting the notice I think it probably deserves.  Checking on the GS pages for these games, it's only in 25 people's collections; and thats a combined count for both versions.

The first I heard about it was when a saw a copy of it behind the glass displays at Wal-Mart.  From what I saw on the back of the box, it looked promising, but I figured I would wait until I checked up on it on GS before I made a descision.  A few days later, when I was back at Wal-Mart, the game was gone.  At least from the glass displays that is.  I found it in the loose games bargain bin - and it hasn't even been out a month yet!  I snatched up a copy and after playing about an hour into the game, I'm glad I did.  It's alot of fun and has a great style to it.

I am going to edit the original post to include games added in this thread to make it easy to manage.

I have to say, I'm a little surprised that more games have not been brought to the communities attention -- I'm looking for games that are out now, new, that might get overlooked that are collectible for any reason.

I'll add Gunpey for the PSP and DS to the list too. The PSP game is only in the collection of  7 people thus far.

No, you should start one. They can be added to this list as long as they can still be purchased new from retail. I'm not sure about WHCP as to what list I'd put that on.

Thanks for the Super Robot Taisen suggestions, I had completely not known about them, but I'll be sure to pick up at least one of them now ASAP.

I don't know if that's brand new buried treasure.  It's more like brand new treasure sitting out in the open for anyone to see.  I have to open my copy soon.  In the same vein, if anyone has a chance to pick up the Taito Legends, I think it is on par with the original Capcom Classics Collection.

It is worth the $10 for Space Invaders, Plump Pop, Operation Wolf and Bubble Bobble.  Here's the complete list of games for those interested; Space Invaders, Jungle Hunt, Bubble Bobble, Operation Wolf, Elevator Action, Phoenix, Zoo Keeper, Battle Shark, Colony 7, Continental Circus, Electric Yo-Yo, Volfied, Gladiator, The New Zealand Story, The Ninja Kids, Operation thunderbolt, Return of the Invaders, Tokio, Plump Pop, Rainbow Islands, Tube It, Great Swordsman, Space Gun, Space Invaders part 2, Super Qix, Exzisus, Plotting, Thunderfox and Rastan.  Also include interesting bonus materials like interviews with the designers and original arcade art.

Yeah, but I'm picky about my compilations, too.  See, I bought Midway Arcade Treasures 1 and 2, but not 3.  The games on 3 suck nut, so enough said.  If there's only 5 titles out of 30 that I like, it's not worth it for me to buy it.

I don't know if that's brand new buried treasure. It's more like brand new treasure sitting out in the open for anyone to see. I have to open my copy soon. In the same vein, if anyone has a chance to pick up the Taito Legends, I think it is on par with the original Capcom Classics Collection.

I have actually been eyeing that one, trying to figure out if it's worth 10 bucks. There's only something like 5 titles in there that I liked, and it looks like Toki didn't make it :(

Also include interesting bonus materials like interviews with the designers and original arcade art.

gotta love the uber-typo in operation wolf. on the map the country name is spelled right but a very simple word is not. anyone know what that word is?

Yeah, but I'm picky about my compilations, too.  See, I bought Midway Arcade Treasures 1 and 2, but not 3.  The games on 3 suck nut, so enough said.  If there's only 5 titles out of 30 that I like, it's not worth it for me to buy it.

Many people have over looked Drill Dozer for the GBA.

I'll go for Tokobot and Dril Dozer, but you'll have to make an argument for Exit, Frantix and PQ.  I almost died under an avalanche of those games when I was at Fry's this week.  They all but had out a sign that said, "Please Shoplift".

Wafle of course made a separate thread about this one, but I think he's right on the money, so I'll list it here as well: Thrillville.

I am really enjoying Sneak King from Burger King. It isn't a long-playing game, but it is a lot of fun while it lasts.

Well let's see... Exit was nominated for several GameSpot awards today including "Best game that nobody played". That should be enough to prove my point. Tokobot was released near the PSP launch, got an 8.2 from this site and most people didn't seem to give it a chance. I found my copy at Toys R Us for $9. Frantix isn't the greatest game, but fans of puzzle solving should enjoy it. Not worth paying full price for, but nobody charges full price for it any more. I bought mine for $12. PQ is a sequel to the PS1hidden treasure game known as I.Q. It's a fun puzzle game that was overshadowed by the likes of Lumines and Mercury.

I have already inducted Tokobot, I'll add the others now.

Yggdra Union for the GBA. It seems to be getting the attention of the usual die hard Atlus fans, but not much from anyone else.

I'm sure it's already been said before in other threads but PSI-OPs is probably the best game you can find for around $10 bucks.  Sniper Elite is also a decent treasure.

Platypus - A claymation shooter for the PSP that's only currently in the collections of 4 people. I somehow doubt that it will achieve mass market success.
