I know I said it before, but the screenshots of these games look good. I haven't played a 3DS, so this is a huge improvement over the PSP and DS.

S0lidSnake

The AMAZING OLED screen will make the games look even better.

I think I saw this before. It was a Japanese video on youtube of a working flexible screen that showed some video. The video was labeled "organic-based LCD screen" or something. It was impressive. So, this is the same technology?

Carnage did you see the amazon.co.uk. pre-order price for a 16GB Vita card? It's only 17.99 pounds. It's probably a mistake but i ordered one anyway. :P

S0lidSnake

Nothing like that has popped up on the US site. I'd jump on that deal if I saw it.

You have a better memory for acronyms than I do. You're right, those flexible screens are OLEDs.

Rayman Origins is hitting the Vita. The big Vita addition is time trials and ghosts one can send to friends.

The basic Vita has Wifi and Bluetooth (one can stream some PS3 games to the Vita). There is a special 3G model which costs 50 bucks extra and whose AT&T connection costs $20 a month.

PS3 games on the Vita? That's awesome. It sounds like Wii 2, where the controller has a screen. Although, I recall hoping that the PSP had this feature. I'm not pointing any fingers. Anyway, the 3G plan sounds decent. Thanks.

I already have the game on PS3, but I'm totally getting the Vita version too. It's great to have a game this awesome on a handheld and my sister is going to play the hell out of it since she loves sidescrollers but only really plays on handhelds. Plus this incredibly overlooked game deserves my support so much that I'm willing to buy it twice.

Eurogamer just posted a great new vid of LBP Vita (some of LBP2's most prominent creators have hinted or openly stated they are involved in LBP Vita).

LBP Vita is being made by Double 11 Studios (whose leads are two ex-Rockstar guys) and Tarsier Studios (one of the handful of studios who worked with MM on the last two LBPs and their DLC). Unfortunately unlike Modnation LBP Vita is B/C with LBP1 or LBP2 levels, but one can use costumes you acquired in those games. Anyway, if the trailer is any indication in terms of user created content (and I'm willing to bet some of those levels are from the ongoing LBP Vita beta) in terms of user created content the Vita version of LBP should hit the ground running.

Though they are flexible, what makes the special is the infinite contrast ratio, absolute black levels (brightness control over individual pixels), color vibrancy, and saturation. Next time you go to an electronics store, take a look at the Galaxy S2 handsets. Technically the displays are called SAMOLED+ (Super Active Matrix OLED Plus), but it's still OLED technology.

[QUOTE="Spirit_of_87"]

Hmmmm..... Looks good but not sure if I want any ports that I can play on my PS3. Gravity Rush looks and sounds awesome and so does Dragon Crown but I'll probably get it for PS3. I hear that Akai Katana will be making it's way over to Vita so that makes it an instant purchase for me. So with that, I'm hoping that someone here can answer the following questions.

  1. Is the Vita backwards compatible with PSP games?
  2. Is the Vita region free?

Thanks!

CarnageHeart

1. You can play games you downloaded no problem, but for disc based games, one has to pay a fee for access to the download (otherwise ten people could use the same disc to get access to the same download on ten different Vitas) since it no longer has a UMD drive.

2. The Vita is region free (so you could buy Japanese games and play them on your US Vita with no problem), but only one account is allowed per memory card, so one would need multiple memory cards if one wants to take advantage of the download deals different regions offer to their users.

The Vita is still region free, but Sony is now contradicting what it said last week, now indicating the Vita is intended to be for a single user and that for multiple accounts one will have to not only have multiple memory cards, but do a factory reset on the Vita.

Speaking as a guy who owns a ton of handhelds (my Ipod, my PSP, my Kindle, my kids' Nook and my kids' DS don't allow for multiple accounts) I think this is a mountain out of a molehill, but I also don't see why Sony seemed to be so surprised about the question and unclear about the answer.

You can still import the memory stick versions of the games. So i guess thats what they meant with being region free.

Not sure why Sony is so intent on making things hard for their consumer, but i agree of all the things to complain about, this is nothing major.

everything is sounding very promising overall. they have fixed every problem with the PSP.

the back touch surface also has the potential to be interesting in games (possibly allowing for finer camera control than the second stick...ill need to get my hands on it to see though). carts instead of that awful UMD, 2 sticks, some awesome looking games, quite powerful, lovely screen (i just hope the refresh rate problems of the PSP are gone..im sure it is), 2 touch surfaces, non 3G version for those not interested....looking ace. if it had TV out then i would probably consider trading in my PS3 for it (i havnt used that for quite some time).

the downsides for me really are

1 its a bit too big 2 the battery life is very poor (but thats true of the 3DS and pretty much all modern mobile tech also.). 3 the sticks stick out...they look like they could be ripped out and damaged easily enough if they got caught on something. 4 non clamshell design....sony seem to have an algeric reaction to this but its great for protecting the screen (and could keep those sticks covered also). 5 no android. i know why sony havent included it but its a device that could really benefit with an android option also. have it as a seperate application that runs on the vita OS even.

these arent a huge deal...just things id like to see fixed in a revision. as for it being designed for 1 user...not a problem. the memory stick? a bit of an annoyance but its really just a 1 shot thing. with all the multimedia, games and demos that will be downloadable (i presume) a one time extra investment in a big wad of storage makes sense for the vita.

edit: turns out the battery is replaceable it seems. removed bits about battery.

Sort of. The names are somewhat meaningless but they actually stand for meaningful improvements* By absolute black levels and infinite contrast, I meant the display emits no light (by turning the individual pixels off) and that the contrast ratio is thousands of times greater than any LCD display. If you've ever seen an LCD in the dark, you've likely noticed that black areas are actually dark gray. OLEDs don't have this issue. It's really something to behold. *Super (capacitive layer is built into glass; less layers, greater brightness/contrast), AM(Active Matrix; more precise control over individual pixels; faster refresh rates) Plus(RBG-RBG subpixel layout; improved color production)

I see. The absolute black levels could mean that human vision is incapable of seeing the electromagnetic radiation that is emitted by the display. I can understand that.

About the LCD display, I know what you're talking about. It would be good to get a hands on demo of the Vita. The display can work, but if the buttons are faulty, that can be a problem. I had two PSPs and regularly used another, and they all had the same problem with the square button. "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me," as the saying goes.

Super Stardust Delta is a download only Vita game (a follow up to Super Stardust HD, which was pretty much Asteroids on steroids). The old smart bomb attack is gone, now you can freeze time, fire a barrage of missiles or create a black hole (which sucks everything but you into it, though you don't want to be caught inbetween a black hole and a giant asteroid).

Vita hit Japan last Saturday and sold though only 65% of its initial shipment (325K sold its first weekend, 500K shipped, reports of system freezes and touchscreen problems).

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/39281/Media_Create_Disappointed_With_Japanese_PS_Vita_Opening_Week_Sales.php

Following the launch of the PlayStation Vita handheld console in Japan, tracking firm Media Create has stated that it is disappointed with the opening weekend sales figures for the latest Sony hardware release.

The PS Vita launched on December 17 in Japan, and sold over 325,000 units in the first two days on sale, compared to the 371,326 units that the Nintendo 3DS sold in its opening weekend.

The bestselling Vita games are Hot Shots Golf and Uncharted.

03. [3DS] Mario Kart 7 (Nintendo, 12/01)

04. [3DS] Inazuma Eleven Go (Level-5, 12/15)

05. [3DS] Super Mario 3D Land (Nintendo, 11/03)

06. [WII] Kirby Wii (Nintendo, 10/27)

07. [PSV] Hot Shots Golf 6 (Sony, 12/17)

08. [WII] Just Dance Wii (Nintendo, 10/13)

09. [PSV] Uncharted Golden Abyss (Sony, 12/17)

A guy on the Neogaf posted a link to his extremely detailed impressions of the PS Vita. In the first link he talks about the weight, the feel, the cameras, the non-gaming software, the B/C, the internet connectivity, etc. In the second link he talks about Golden Abyss (he liked it, buthad serious issues with the aiming), Blazblue (he enjoyed it), MVC3 (he enjoyed it), Hot Shots (he enjoyed it despite the fact it was noticeably low-rez), Little Deviants (which he found to beboring, generic minigame collection)and Ridge Racer (a ripoff lacking in content).

Ninja Gaiden Sigma on a handheld? Not bad.

Ninja Gaiden DS was good, but it doesn't compare to the console games.

U.S Prices for Memory Cards are confirmed. Not too expensive for the cheapest option so thats something, but for Sony to push DD with his model and then ship a portable with no internal storage to download these DD games is an assinine move.

4GB - $19.99
8GB - $39.99
16 GB - $59.99
32 GB - $99.99

Rayman Origins, Uncharted, and Escape Plan are mine.

Will wait for Gravity Rush. I might also get the PS plus membership to get discounts on Vita games.

I'm probably going to pick up the 32 GB memory card out of the gate just because I have a lot of PSP games (on a 32 GB card).

Moving on, going through the thread, I realize this thread is sadly lacking in Escape Plan info.

Escape Plan is a puzzler from the makers of Fat Princess, and it continues that game's tradition of gory death and cartoon characters, though everything else is different. Its a touchscreen based puzzler in which two guys (seen in picture below) try to escape a trap filled lab. When they mess up, they die in spectacular fashion (the whole thing is more than a little reminiscent of Limbo).

That's an understatement. Those seem overpriced, too.

I have a question. Will there be any cross-platform gaming? For example, SFvsTK Vita players against PS3 ones.

Yes, they are overpriced, but the entry fee to start playng and saving your games is $20 which puts the Vita cost at $270. Still lower than the $300-$350 i was expecting with all the amazing tech in there.

It has to be good technology to be capable of handling those kinds of visuals. Still, I feel like the price of other portable memory should be mentioned.

I can get a microsd card for $9 dollars or a 32 GB for around $35-40 from multiple stores.

Not to mention microsd cards were used for external memory with PSP games. Speaking of that, I wonder if 3rd party cards can be used for the Vita.

Im guessing you havent seen my b***ing and moaning about these vita memory cards in practicallly every Vita thread in GGD in the last few weeks. :P I agree, the prices are ridiculous.... but compared to the ones that leaked earlier this year, the cheapest one is actually not that bad.

We wont see any third party SD cards for a while. I would say give it a year or two.

I once heard that it's possible to do so. In the case of SFXT, that is happening.

I did notice a little bit once I checked earlier in this thread, actually. That was after I posted. I guess we'll see if the games play as good as they look once it reaches the states. If they do, then I suppose it's worth it. It should be especially worth it with the 3g version, granted a lot of people get that one.

Glad you like the news!

As for me, since I have a ton of console games to look forward to in early 2012, I may have to pass on the Vita. However, I'm hoping that Gamestop or other retail stores will allow people to preview the system. I got that chance before the Nintendo 3DS came out.

Being able to try it out would make a difference. I prefer consoles, but if I want to play new games, this is my best option for now.

By the best option, do you mean portable or console? Portable is good to have for traveling, which is why I prefer something like SFXT...it would keep me busy for hours on the road.
