I got to sit down with the game for a couple hours over at my friend Delo's house. Here's what I thought:
1) Cool characters. A boxing kangaroo? NEAT! Extra cool that his abbreviated name is "Rog."
2) Bob = Rufus. If nobody else can see this, I'll lose faith in humanity. If I understand correctly, Bob came before Rufus, but still. One inspired the creation of the other, I am fully convinced.
3) The game looks good - damn good - but I don't think it looks better than SCIV. SCIV is, to me, more fluid and organic. Tekken still looks just a bit blocky, by comparison. That said, I still liked the visuals a lot. They are colorful, interesting, smooth, creative, and technically competent.
4) After playing as all the characters at least once, I found I really liked a handful, but found myself "maining" Feng. It's Kung-Fu, man... what's not to like? I know Law and Lei represent Kung-Fu as well, but something about Feng's playstyle reminded me of Lei-Fei from VF5, and that's good stuff. Ironically, Feng also reminds me of VF5's Lau Chan quite a bit, which is crazy since I absolutely hate Lau. Weird, eh?
5) I still find the juggles annoying. I get hit once, then have to just sit and watch Delo jab me six times before I land. Yeah, yeah, I know... don't get popped up. I totally see how this is part of the game and how it is not a deal-breaker. It's just a personal annoyance.
6) The only real gripe I have with the game is that pushing UP causes me to jump, rather than sidestep. When am I ever going to want to jump up and do nothing in a 3D fighter? I'll tell you when: almost never. By contrast, when am I going to want to slip by an opponent's attack? Almost constantly. To me, having to double-tap UP/DOWN to sidestep is just bad, thoughtless design.
7) Tekken 6 might be the game that gets me into the series once and for all. Buying in will have to wait till I get done with this upcoming move, but all-in-all, I liked it, I think I understand why you guys were so hyped for it, and I find myself looking forward to playing more. Not sure how things will go once SSF4 drops, though...
How are the tunes for Tekken 6? I really enjoyed the ones in T5 especially "The Finalizer", "Ground Zero Funk", and my all-time favourite Tekken tune "Moonlit Wilderness".
There's a mode called Arena mode. Everytime you unlock a character through the Scenario Campaign, they are made available to play through that one. It's like the typical story mode from the past Tekkens. Choose a character, see an intro on who they are and why they are in the tournament, then go through the levels, beat the game (Azazel is probably one of the worst final bosses in Tekken history), and then get yourself an ending.Um, I'm probably a dope for saying this, but where exactly is the story mode? I'm not talking about the Scenario Campaign side game where you follow Lars (which strangely is the first thing on the menu O_o) but the individual fighters story. I checked offline mode and it's not there... it better not be part of the Scenario Campaign! :x

One thing that I found to be a plus in Tekken 6.
I'm sure there are new fans out there that have yet to play Tekken or heard of the name, but cannot familiarize themselves with the story for some reason.
In Tekken 6, on the Scenario Campaign, I liked how Namco made sure that everyone was brought up to speed from the events that happened in regards to the Mishima family, starting from the original Tekken to where things stand. I thought that was cool
On the downside however - has anyone found it strange that while everyone is talking their own language, they can somehow understand each other? :\

Yeah, I found that out when I finally decided to play Scenario Campaign.... Damn. I really don't care about playing the SC seeing how half-assed it is, but I really have no choice... and it doesn't help that the cutscenes are boring and drag on forever. At least the sweet photorealistic animation of the characters in it all in buttery smooth 60 fps sort of makes up for it. Sort of. >___>Um, I'm probably a dope for saying this, but where exactly is the story mode? I've been playing Tekken since the original and Feng is my main and has been since he was introduced to the series in Tekken 5. He's a bit tricky to learn at first since many of his most damaging attacks require you to get in very close andbut he's a beast when unleashed. Based on the time I've logged in on Tekken 6, they've made him even nastier.
So I think I played about 7 hours of Tekken yesterday.... All in all, I absolutely love it. I have no complaints with the core game whatsoever. That being said, the online seems pretty terrible right now, and Azazel is one of the worst fighting game bosses I've ever played. He's easy enough to beat once you learn him, but I hate that you can't beat him fighting like you normally would. You just have to rush him and jab him to death. The customization items are ridiculously overpriced.
Anyway, that stuff is all superficial. I'm digging the new characters... especially Miguel, Zafina and Bob. We had a blast playing it, and I'm pretty sure I'll be thinking about Tekken all day until I can get home and play some more.
Thanks to everybody for keeping this thread going.
I'm moving into a new house tomorrow and I won't be getting my high speed back up until next Wed. so I won't really be able to play online until next week. Hopefully Namco can get the online issues ironed out by then.
That said, I did want to post some observations as a long-time Tekken junkie.
- Visually, this game is being unfairly maligned and I really don't understand why. Graphically, Tekken 6 isn't on the same level as something like Uncharted 2 but it is nevertheless a visually competent game with a smooth and stable 60-frame-per-second rate. Apparently, the blur effect, when turned off, increases resolution but to be honest I think the slightly lower resolution is worth the trade off. The motion blur imbues theanimations with a fluidity unmatched by any other fighter I've playedand overall I think the game is on par with SC4 and actually looks a tad better in motion, though that is certainly debatable.
- When loaded entirely to the XB360 HD, the load times become negligible. I'd say when fully installed, the load times on the character select screen are nearly equal to the arcade.
- The new characters are all eclectic and certainly appeal to a wide variety of play styles. Bob is currently my favorite though I have no idea if I'll use any of the newcomers on a regular basis.
- The Scenario mode sucks but at this point we all expected that. It's an ancillary mode and to be honest it was never all that much fun in previous Tekkens.
Having played some of my regulars, I can attest to some significant changes in technique:
- Lei continues to expand in terms of technique and variety and his expanded arsenal becomes apparent almost immediately.
- Feng has been given several new tools while keeping those previous attributes which made him so deadly in Tekken 5 and DR. He will remain my #1.
- Dragonov, already a formidable character, has gotten a hefty increase to his stand up and striking games while retaining his vicious grapples and gaining some new counter options. I'm seriously going to consider using him as my #2.
-Law, more like Bruce Lee than ever, continues to evolve into something fast, powerful and unpredictable, capable of employing a nasty mix up game with plenty of offensive options from all positions and distances. Expect plenty of Law players online.
- Lars is juggle-tastic and has some very easy launchers. His power and speed makes him an interesting alternative to the Mishimas.
- Zafina may be Tekken's answer to Voldo. Her stances and attacks are left field all the way and could prove to be a difficult character to anticipate, assuming a player can master her many stances and divergent style.
Overall I'm pleased with what I've played so far. Reading some of the critical responses makes me chuckle as the notion of completely overhauling this franchise would essentially rob it of what makes it Tekken. The bottom line is that there is plenty new, built on the solid foundation of the old,and it seems likeyet another successful entry.

Agreed. I think it looks gorgeous. Initially I took the motion blur off as I thought I'd like the increased anti-aliasing that comes with it in the PS3 version. I almost immediately put it back on. The blur really makes the game look incredible.

I'd say when fully installed, the load times on the character select screen are nearly equal to the arcade.I did the optional install on the PS3 version, and I have no complaints about the load times either. I wonder if reviewers complain about it because they assume the average person won't install.Grammaton-Cleric

I'm really digging most of the additions they've made to Lei. His three hit combo in his drunken boxing stance is awesome, especially since you can use it to go into Phoenix or Crane. They've added a lot of stuff to his two 'laying on the floor' stances as well. I miss being able to drop straight down and spring back up with both kicks. It was such a good way to launch someone in the air for a large juggle.
My best friend was playing as Dragunov last night. His new counter seems to really cement him as a solid defensive character. My best friend was interrupting people left and right with Dragunov, it was pretty fun to watch.
Law is fast becoming one of my favorites. He has such a good mix of speed and power.
I played a lot of Xiaoyu last night and didn't notice any significant changes to her which is good. I prefer playing as Lei, but if I really need to end someone's streak I'll bust out Xiaoyu. She is all over the place.
...and I'm totally agreed on your last point, I can't think of anything good that could come from an overhaul. This game is pure Tekken and pure awesome.
Good choice on Feng, I must say. This guy's just as freakin' stylish as can be, imo, and his mix-up options are right up my alley. I also really dig his stance changes - kind of a weakness of mine ever since Lei-Fei. At this very early point, it seems like Feng is destined to be my main if and when I pick up Tekken full time.- Feng has been given several new tools while keeping those previous attributes which made him so deadly in Tekken 5 and DR. He will remain my #1.
- Zafina may be Tekken's answer to Voldo. Her stances and attacks are left field all the way and could prove to be a difficult character to anticipate, assuming a player can master her many stances and divergent style.

I got the same Voldo vibe from Zafina, and this is another character that I thought was almost too cool for words. It's really hard to say which direction I might go in as far as a secondary character, but Zafina is definitely interesting. It helps that she's absolutely nothing at all like Feng, too, since I like my mains and secondaries to be WAY far apart stylistically.
On a side note, was I the only one who saw the Bob/Rufus similarity? I'm not even just talking about the chunky body and blonde hair - this dude pretty much has Rufus's Messiah Kick. I'm not bringing this up to suggest Tekken robbed the character design from SF (since, unless I'm mistaken, Bob has been around longer in Japan or whatever), but still. You seeing this too?

Pretty much the first thing I thought when I first saw Bob. Both characters are supposed to be almost ironic in nature: fat but incredibly fast and agile.
The same thing happened back when Steve Fox hit Tekken 4 and Brad Burns landed on VF: Evo roughly around the same time sporting similar outfits and even some shared techniques. (i.e bobbing and weaving)

No, you're correct, but what was interstingwas that he and Steve came out at the same time, had very similar outfits, and both had mechanics where the bobbing and swaying was a large part of their move set.

I kept on thinking that Rufus and Bob were pretty much one and the same. Fat guys with real speed and some nasty combos. I guess companies are finding it hard to come up with something original, so they have to take a play out of someone else's book to get the job done. Different character, different universe, but the same type of fighter.

First off, you're very welcome! :)
Second, on Law, I have been playing as him since the original Tekken. Fast forward to the sixth Tekken and anything that I knew about him just threw out the window, especially since I've meet a lot more Law players who knew exactly what they were doing. I guess I have a lot to learn with Law.
Third, I'm with you and Shen on this one. Immediately when I tried her the first time, I kept on thinking of Voldo. This is indeed Tekken's Voldo. A lot of weird stances, but it's great, because you can confuse your opponent with her mixup game and make it flow really well. She can be very dangerous in the hands of the an expert. I expect to see more Zalina players online as time progresses. My opinion, shs's definitely one character to look out for.
That said, I like Tekken 6. The overall impression that I have, thus far, is that it's a great installment. Forty characters for any player to like, the stages look great, controls are easy to use to pull off your favorite moves and combos, and there's a lot of stuff to unlock.
Now, as for complaints, I have some.
-The training mode. You know how in Virtua Fighter or Dead Or Alive, you were given the option to go from one move or combo to the next? No such option exists on here, which is unfortunate. I mean, they show a demo of the move, but it's like you have to sit there and go through the motions with trial and error involved. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I'd like it if Namco had included that option.
-Scenario Campaign. The scenes do drag out for far too long. I keep thinking that maybe Namco was going for an RPG or story-driven feel to it, so I have a feeling the mode is going to take time to complete.
-The soundtrack. Now, one of the reasons why I love the series is because of their soundtracks. A lot of good music tracks came from that series. But in Tekken 6, I hate to say, but it's actually forgettable. That's a disappointment. Maybe one or two tracks stand out, but that's about it.
-Finally, the online service. VERY DISAPPOINTED. I still get a lot of frequent connection drops, so it's like the only way for it to be successful is by finishing the battle quickly before it does its thing. Namco should be ashamed of themselves for it. King9999 did tell me that there's a thread over at the Mishima Zaibatsu forums for the issue in the hopes that Namco addresses the problem. I hope they do. Otherwise, I may be stuck playing Tekken 6 solo.
Hey guys. Just wondering, is their a difference between the PS3 and 360 version? I'm asking mostly about visuals. I'm hearing something about anti-aliasing on the PS3 version. Does that mean the 360 doesn't have this? Also, because of blu-ray, is the 360 version slightly inferior visually than the PS3 one? Anyway, I just picked up the 360 version today. Hopefully it's great! ASK_StoryMore or less the games are identical. If anything, the only advantage blu-ray would have here would be the CG ending videos might look better due to less compression... but I doubt it. Both versions are rendered at less than 720p when the motion blur is on. If you turn the blur off on the 360 version, the resolution gets bumped up to native 720p, if you turn the blur off on the PS3 version, the resolutions stays the same, but it gets extra anti-aliasing. The game looks so much better with the motion blur turned on, so it isn't really an issue.
I was a huge fan of Tekken 3 back in the day. I lost touch with the series after that. Is this game like Tekken 3 in terms of extras and content?dvader654There's definitely A LOT to unlock. Characters, stages, even little extras you can put on for your costumes and even extra costumes, for that matter. You also earn gold through fights and completing other tasks as well. That money allows you to buy those extras.

I think the T6 soundtrack is very good, but at this point I don't think any Tekken game will match the greatness of T2 and T3's music.

I didn't mind Tekken 4, but Tekken 5 brought me to the point of where it just wasn't going anywhere new. But I think Tekken 6 brought the series back to life for a bit longer and has kept my interest in Tekken again.

Actually, I kinda answered that quesiton when I brought it up as one of my complaints. Again, I feel that the soundtrack is forgettable, but does have one or two good moments, like the background stage for Azazel. That said, I do agree with you on T2 and T3's music. The arranged soundtracks for both T2 and T3 are some of the best the series has to offer musically.
Personally I just use the custom soundtracks and listen to my own stuff. I've never been nuts for fighting game music. One more item regarding the graphics:
Having played the arcade version I can tell you without hesitation that the jaggies were present there as well. I think the real issue is that this is the first true HD Tekken and I think the slightly uneven graphical presentation is really just growing pains. That said, I agree with those of you who think this game looks great, because it does.
Those people (mostly on Neogaf) claiming Tekken: DR looks better should get their eyes checked out ASAP. I can handle a few minor jaggies when the game looks and moves this well.

Here is Gamespot's review:
While a bouncing pig may be a slight distraction and the online can be disappointing, it's nowhere near enough to dull the outstanding qualities that Tekken 6 has to offer. For fans, Tekken 6 is the most complete Tekken experience so far. It features a large roster, strong customization options, and tight mechanics, and it's sure to be a time sink as you enjoy battle after battle and strive to perfect your skills. If you're a newcomer, the game is as welcoming as ever, and there's plenty here to keep you occupied until you're ready to start busting out your own combos. If you're a fighting fan or are just curious to dip a tentative fist into the genre, then Tekken 6 is the game for you.

Also, what's the difference between Typa A, B, or C in the Display options? I tried A and C but I don't find anything really different. And I kind of like it without motion blur on. Is it just me or does it seem cleaner?

And to those who are online, are there any DLC yet other than those Gamestop exclusive crap?

Tekken 6 is a really fun game with a lot of depth in the fighting engine.
But I do have several gripes about the game.
Life bars are a little bit too low, which makes rounds go by way too quick. Thats just my opinion anyway. So other people may actually like it like that but I dont.
Only one player can play with a customized outfit in Versus Mode. No two save files? Really? That's retarded.
