The Open Beta starts tomorrow. Anyone game? There is a also a Single Player demo hitting on Feburary 16th.

I think it's funny how the Killzone series went from being the most hyped series to the least hyped in a matter of two years. KZ2 really was disappointing in that it just couldn't live up to the massive expectations.

That aside, i thought the multiplayer was phenomenal. Warzone was a clever online mode that for some reason not many online shooters adapted. I was in the beta for a little while and the game certainly feels tailored to cater to a wider audience. Not sure if it's for the best. That said, the game still felt Killzone. The heavy controls are still there but the game is a lot more responsive. Players have less health. Most guns now have sights and there are Mechs and Jet Packs around to keep the COD freaks, but there are only a few of those in each levels so it's not unbalanced like in COD where you can like 4 choppers, harriers and AC-130s in the air at the same time. There are Killstreaks but they dont give you any rewards outside of XP bonus.

Not completely thrilled about all the changes, but I need to play more to see how broken the aim assist and low health combo really is.

Anyway, here are some cool stats about Killzone 3.

Not really into competitive multiplayer anymore. But I will rent KZ3 for the single-player.

Its day one so I'm not playing any betas or demos. The first time you load up a game and just start staring at the environments in awe is a big part of my enjoyment and first impression. Only 3 weeks to go, so no big deal. I like reading impressions though.

Also Im glad this game isn't as hyped. Hype never really helps a game and maybe this time people will give the game a fair chance since they aren't expecting a revolution in FPS's or something.

S0lidSnake

Expectations were pretty low for Killzone 2... Killzone 2 had a lot to prove after the massive, critical failure that was the first Killzone. Remember that game being hyped as the "Halo Killer"? Well, it failed. Killzone 2 shocked everyone at how huge of an improvement it was.

I thought about downloading it, but I think I got my fill with the closed beta. Besides that I've got a mountain ton of games to work through right now, so those take priority. Multiplayer was good, though. Loved that Warzone mode especially.

Might check out the single-player demo. Not sure yet. I'll try and post up some impressions if I do.

I quite liked KZ2, but there seems to be no hype around the sequel and I have to put it down to KZ2 not delivering on what people were expecting. It didnt sell all that well either.

To me, outside of Halo Reach (and a few levels of Halo 3) KZ2's campaign had the best gunplay out of all shooters this gen. I loved the atmosphere and the shooting set pieces were so much fun to go back and play again because thanks to the fantastic A.I, they never played the same.

I loved the campaign of KZ2 (phenomenal AI).My (and I suspect other people's) problem with KZ2 was that the multiplayer was sloppy out of the gate (despite the fact Warzone was awesome). From day one the assault **** was wildly overpowered (they had a mode where they sped and rapidly healed from damage and wielded rocket launchers that could clear a room), drones were incredibly useless and one couldn't see the rules of a match before enterring the match. Also, while putting spawn points in the hands of players was a cool idea, the problem is that that meant that while a smart guy can put his team in a position to win, an idiot can lose the match for his entire team (if I had a dollar for every time I spawned facing a wall...).

All of that was stuff people complained about in the KZ2 beta and none of those issues were addressed out of the gate (they were addressed down the line, but by then many frustrated people had moved on). I was a big Warhawk player and after spending about a hundred hours in KZ2 and watching all sorts of variables fluctuate as the team trying to address what they should have addressed out the gate, I (and others) went back to Warhawk. I'm willing to bet fans of other online shooters went back to those games as well.

Moving on the KZ3, I was in the closed beta and based on the little I played (a dozen or so hours) the multiplayer seems to be better balanced this time around. The armored suits feel very powerful (and they can kill anything in their field of vision very quickly) but since they have a limited field of vision and can easily be ambushed, so they don't unbalance the game (never tried a jetpack). Missiles are less effective than at KZ2's launch and tacticians are no less important, but they haveless discretion(they activate and deactivate preset spawn points).

So, yes, I'm looking forward to having fun in the open beta.

Yes, because going from a PS2 video game that sucked to a PS3 game that was good, isn't a major jump. DUH.

I'm going to ruin this informative discussion of numberswith talk about the text of some ofthe reviews :).

The two diverging views Eurogamer and GS had of the campaign were interesting. GS said 'Well crafted and full of variety'. Eurogamer said 'It abandons the intense, claustrophobic feel of KZ2 and goes for giant battles sometimes with giant enemies and even has a stealth section'. GS also had a low opinion of KZ3's story while Eurogamer found it 'Entertaining'.

Those aren't direct quotes, but thoseare the substance of their perspectives on the campaign. Both sound like reasonable, but I suspect that I will come down on Eurogamer's side of the argument. I'm not deeply opposed to variety, but I love games like KZ2 and the original FEAR which just gave me a couple guns and put me up against very intelligent opponents. It didn't matter to me that there were a wide variety of opponents because they were so interesting to fight.

Provided the AI of KZ3's human enemies isn't dumbed down like the AI of FEAR 2's human enemies (an allegation no one has yet made) I won't be too pissed off at Guerilla for bowing to convention rather than sticking to their guns.

Which all the reviewers are invariably complaining about. Which concerns me, since I'm more interested in the campaign, especially now that now that I know first hand the controls have been fixed

I'm not too impressed with the move controls. They take a lot of getting used to, even when playing against bots. Against people, I imagine you'd just get slaughtered before you could figure it out. The controls are plenty accurate if your enemy is on the same level as you, but levels are designed with enough verticality that if an enemy is higher or lower than you, they'll kill you before you can aim at them. I could see these controls being fun in the single player, but it just doesn't quite work for multiplayer.

I figured that would be the case. My experiences with multiplayer shooters on the Wii has been similar. Granted, everyone's using that control style in those cases, but it still doesn't work as well, I find. The multiplayer scene is simply too fast for motion controls.

I had an extremely frustrating experience with MAG and Move, and swore off playing online shooters with a Move until I got better at it. KZ3's Move implementation is getting rave reviews so I'd say first get a lot of practice in single player then see if you can compete online. Starting off an online game with Move controls is a huge mistake, one i will never ever make again.

Okay so played Operations, a lot of Operations. Mostly because I couldn't get into a Warzone or Deathmatch game, which is hilarious because it says the lobby is full. Why not go back to giving us Server lists so we can create our own game, FFS!?

And that's it for the negatives. Seriously. Operations is the most fun I've had playing an online mode since Acquisition in MAG. Not only do you get some cool looking cutscenes, you also get to star in those scenes similar to what Battlefield Bad Company 2 tried to do last year. However, in KZ3 your name tag and character are used in the realtime cutscenes which feel like a pretty cool reward, ESPECIALLY since they only include you if you've earned the most objective points. One round I had the most kills, but it didn't put me in a cutscene. So the next round, i focused exclusively on objectives and was there in all of the cutscenes blowing s*** up, getting smacked across the face when we lost, etc. Pretty cool stuff.

Aside from the cutscenes, Operation is so much fun because it actually feels like a coop mission at times. You start off by storming the beach, break the enemy's defenses (Search & Destroy), destroy their communications (Capture and Hold) and then move on to their last hide out for the final kill. It's different than Warzone in that the enemy cant disarm your explosives so it moves a lot faster, and the capture and hold nodes require you to advance further into the enemy base instead of being placed randomly through out the level. The last push after capturing nodes was almost impossible because the Helghast are so well fortified, but I was able to sneak through tunnels and flank them once I learned the map. It's alot like MAG in that it feels like you are part of a big battlefield as you slowly work as a team and climb up the hill to take the final base, unlike other games where everyone is randomly running around the maps completing various objectives.

The game runs incredibly smooth. This definitely looks like the final built. The lower health isnt a problem now that i have unlocked Armor. The unlock XP system is pretty well balanced, giving you tons of XP for almost everything. I ranked up the first four levels in a single Operations game, and have unlocked all three Medic machines guns, and maxed out his Primary ability. But then again, I am awesome in KZ games and was the top player more often than not. :P Like the guns a lot, The ISA rifle for the medic is now semi automatic, but comes with a silencer. There is also a pretty cool looking SMG in the third tier of the secondary weapon that I definitely want to unlock. Shouldnt take more than a couple of Operations rounds.

I feel like I am in love again. Yeah, it's not exactly the same as KZ2 but it's still fun.

P.S I really hope GG doesn't listen to people over at gaf and their official forums and starts changing stuff. Let's just leave it as is, it's not perfect, but f*** it, let us get used to it. KZ2 felt like it was being changed every two weeks, let's leave this game alone and fix bugs and glitches instead of trying to balance the game and breaking it in the process.

I only played one match of Warzone so far because I was a bit busy with Dead Space 2. I'll play more of KZ3 on the weekend. Anyway I really enjoyed it so far. It looks, sounds, and plays great. It did feel a bit different then KZ2 but not really a whole lot and it was still very fun. I'm looking forward to trying out the single-player demo when it hits.

Downloaded the Beta last night and played a match against bots. I was impressed. The engine feels smoother than KZ2, and the framerate holds up rather well. Did I mention this game is incredibly beautiful? Just, wow! S0lid, if you wanna jam on some MP, I"ll check it out with you.

Should I charge up my BlueTooth? Or are we going to communicate using PSN's annoying Message Capabilities?

Something came up and I wasn't able to play KZ3 last night, but I certainly will do so tonight. Also, as abuyer of PSPlus,I'm looking forward to trying the SP demo in four days time.

Reviewers seem to be all over the map about the quality of the campaign and the AI and while a demo can't show how a game plays all the way through, it gives one a taste.

It's just three maps. All of them are variations of the actual single player levels, so it's not like you are getting the whole level spoiled for you. One of them is a snow map based on the level we saw in E3. I am crazy about spoilers too but basically all you are getting here is three different color pallates and some industrial locations.

dvader: read my impressions above, and you will have some idea of what Operations is like.

I doubt I will have time tbh, I need to finish DS2 and I joined a GT5 racing league which has a race on Saturday. I still need to choose my car from like a dozen possible choices and Sunday is Superbowl sunday!!

I read a couple of reviews, and it seems all of a sudden everyone has become a fan of KZ2's single player campaign. Eurogamer review mentions how the emphasis on variety has taken away from the shooting setpieces KZ2 was so good at. I thought you and I were the only ones who actually liked the single player in KZ2, but apparently every other reviewer out there liked the slow military styIe progression of the campaign. And now that it's become more action packed with vehicle sequences and explosive action sequences, they dont care for it anymore. Funnily enough i remember people using the lack of variety and story as an excuse to bash on KZ2 back when it came out.

I dont know, I loved the first five mission in KZ2. Played them over and over for months because I too liked that military sim feel of the first half of the game. But at the same time, I wanted more vehicle segments, more variety, a bigger focus on story and definitely a lot more excitement. By all accounts they seem to have done all that, yet for some it's not good enough. I am really curious to see how bad the story is because the voice acting and mocap is fantastic by all accounts.

Im loving it so far. there are only a few problems

- the glare coming off the snow is a bit excessive

- if you are playing as ISA, your character screams like a little girl every time you die.

- some of the automated weapons are a bit too overpowered

thats it really. the rest is solid. I cant wait to see what the final version is like.

Played three rounds of warzone this morning. It doesn't seem like there is any attempt at team balancing (that might be a sideeffect of the fact it allows groups of friends to play together) so all three matches were pretty one-sided. Unfortunately I was on the wrong side. Still, I like the fact that stripped down versions of every class (the spy for example doesn't have C4 or a sidearm) are playable out of the gate and that online play runs really smoothly.

There is matchmaking in this game so they game will automatically fill up spots with NEW players in case someone decides to leave mid game. I have played quite a few rounds of Operations and Warfare, and both teams had an even count more times than not. Warzone was decent as well.

I know you didnt like unlocking cIasses in KZ2, but I think it's far more unbalanced here. In KZ2, you could play maybe a few hours of Body Count only and unlock every cIass, and that was it. You got your cIass' best gun, it's primary ability unlocked right away instead of unlocking everything piece of by piece like in KZ3. Unlocking stuff is really fast for your first cIass but as you start to level up, unlocking points becomes a lot tougher so if you want to try out a different cIass, you are stuck with the basic version of that cIass without a sidearm, a s***ty rifle and no abilities whatsoever. Unlocking everything for all cIasses will take forever in this game. Not sure if I like that.
