Quite a lot of people (including myself) plan to boycott Valve's upcoming sequel, Left 4 Dead 2. And for good reason if you ask me: By them releasing Left 4 Dead 2, it's them saying "We're not going to release any new maps for Left 4 Dead (the original) or any new content at all. Buy our new game, Left 4 Dead 2." This tells me that I should probably not buy Left 4 Dead 2 right away (if at all), not only because they're so cocky that they're probably going to release this **** for 40 or more dollars, but also abecause I know that within a year they're going to be moving on to bigger things.

Just by looking at the comments on several L4D2 videos and announcements you can tell how a lot of gamers feel about this. They're saying Left 4 Dead 2 should have come in the form of free DLC for L4D, and can you blame them?

What are your thoughts?

Better yet buy it used and don't purchase dlc. I was disappointed by the first since its single player was boring.

A boycott is ridicuous, I don't agree with what Valve is doing but a boycott isn't the answer.

This is silly. You are not owed free DLC because they've give some away in the past. Valve is a business and their first priority should be fiscal solvency. That means they need to produce revenue and while DLC can help with that, used game sales detract from that same figure. A new release that forces new purchases is a realistic solution to their problem.

Based on what I've seen of the content updates to 2, it's certainly no worse a sequel than many others I've seen.

As of the time of me posting this, our boycott is putting Valve out of $350,000 dollars.

Valve is still actively supporting Counter-Strike well after the release of Counter-Strike: Source. If you think Valve is suddenly going to stop supporting Left 4 Dead just because a sequel's coming out, think again. That's now how Valve operates.

Fun fact: There are several major bugs in Counter-Strike and Counter-Strike: Source that have existed since release and have never been fixed. Why? Because there's no profit involved in fixing a game-altering bug if the only people who care already paid.

Valve is one of not even a handful of developers who have never made a bad game so I respect them. Also they support all their games likfe CSS or DoD:S. L4D was a fun game that I played alot more than other games that costs me $50 so I have abosolutely no problem with buying the sequal becouse I know it will be fun and it will be worth the money unlike for example the CoD games.

You are incorrect. The last time valve did a somewhat significant update to counter-strike was December of 2006. But that's not the point. The point is that they mentioned they had been working to put out Left 4 Dead 2 since launch. They literally promised that many of the missing features within the first game would be added as downloadable content(which is nothing new for the pc industry, downloadable content has always been free because you are often using their game servers instead of microsoft or playstation's servers). So, please no one try and say I should be thankful that we even got anything for free, if any of you, ANY of you, know anything about PC gaming, then you would know free downloads is something we not only expect, it's something we demand. Since they have been working on this game since launch, that would have easily slowed down any sort of production they could have accomplished for the game, which hasn't been much. They have released a small beta of the SDK, which was one feature I along with many other players waited patiently for, but now that it is here, the game has not even been updated to support it. Why has it not been updated? Well it could be many reasons, but Valve unfortunately has shown themselves unavailable to the average gamer since they got their hands on the significant money that L4D got them. I along with many others used my money to buy the game looking to the future in hope that the game would not only continue to renew my interests, but in hopes that it would continue to deliver on valve's promises. They have done no such thing, so no, I don't think they will continue to update the game. After they get money for their next game, what's to keep them updating their game? And I do not think it is silly at all to boycott a product, especially us PC gamers boycotting their product. We have always been their #1 support, so if that support is gone, I could foreseeably see Valve checking in and making a compromise. Since when was boycotting something a terrible use of our time? If any of you really felt you could make a difference, I think you'd do the same in many situations. The average consumers are too used to being treated as a pure number, and not as an individual, and I think if many saw themselves as an individual in the company's eyes, they would work to promote better quality in products. What's wrong with demanding better quality? Last time I looked competition among products helped quality raise, and this is no different, this could only help to get Valve aware of their actions and give us better quality as a whole.

Wait, but did ALL users, including 360 owners, already get some free DLC for L4D at this time? Not a lot, but at least patches and updates/revisions.

2006 is still a long time after the game's release. Much more time than has passed since L4D's release. But hey, go ahead and boycott Valve. They still have a lot of other people supporting them so that they can continue to support Left 4 Dead long after you've boycotted it.

I'm not boycotting it (I don't believe in the concept), but I probably won't be buying it. No matter how you look at it, this is a very un-Valve move for Valve. They released a game extremely light on content which people bought en masse (PC gamers at least) under the pretense that Valve will employ the Team Fortress 2 model for Left 4 Dead. Obviously, that is not going to happen. I'm not angry with Valve, I still love them. I am disappointed, though. 360 gamers will probably not understand this, but PC gamers have a very special relationship with Valve. There are great, amazing developers and then there's Valve. Valve goes beyond making essential games - Valve is the only high profile developer that fans really trust. And I'm not using that word lightly. Valve has a long reputation of not only significant post-release support, but more importantly, Valve is a developer that actually listens and interacts with their fans on a regular basis. This could stain that relationship.

Again, this is simply a very un-Valve move, a very consolish move which definitely doesn't resonate well with me at all. On top of that, releasing Left 4 Dead 2 before even showing Episode Three is unfathomable to me.

No kidding. I mean, they have botched the episodic model so badly, that the very idea of calling the third one an "episode" is kind of insulting to the quality work that the guys at Telltale are doing with the format.

I don't have L4D (although I am interested in playing it with friends on the 360), but still this move surprises me. It's funny that a lot of people feel that L4D2 is some sort of joke, since it looks too similar to the first.

I hate to sound mean;but just get over it. So what they are making a new L4D. I can't wait for the game. Just because they aren't doing anything for L4D1 doesn't mean they should just stop for people like you. They had four maps, but Valve made the AI system so well that it was a different experience each time. If you got bored with the last one, then you either a. had no friends or, b. had no sense of fun and imagination

That's actually not true at all - especially in the PC realm. PC gamers make things happen - and make things go away. I'll use the recent example of DRM vs. PC gamers battle. It all started with the StarForce debacle of which Ubisoft was the biggest supporter. PC gamers made things happen when Ubisoft finally dropped Starforce in early 2006 with the release of Heroes of Might and Magic V thanks to overwhelming pressure - including a widespread boycott. Some time later it was 2K Games' turn with BioShock which supported SecuROM. Once again, 2K was forced to drop support thanks to PC gamer pressure. Most famously, though, EA is quickly dropping DRM announcing their highest profile PC titles such as The Sims 3 and Dragon Age will sport no DRM whatsoever even though SecuROM DRM was initially confirmed for both games. Naturally, the rioting surrounding Spore (including a cIass-action lawsuit) put a stop to that.

Dude, get over yourself. Some little boycotte that some loser posts on Gamespot won't do anything, and PC gamers dont have any more power than any other gamer in how a company listens to their feedback... and if you know anything then you know that Episode 2 was rushed out because the fans demanded it so they put it out as soon as possible. Now many people are demanding Episode 3 and they havent said anything about it, so it's probobly still in development. Stop being so spoiled and just wait for it and respect the company that from what you posted earlier respects "PC gamers" and takes their thoughts into consideration.chugachea

Actually, I just provided insights into how gamers can change things so you are obviously incorrect.

Episode Two was not rushed, it was a finished and polished product. If you have any evidence to the contrary, please provide it. Also, if it were indeed rushed due to fan outcry as you claimed then surely Valve would release Episode Three a long time ago which they obviously didn't. So your little theory has a pretty big loophole.

I personaly am just going to wait for a cheap weekend deal rather than day 1 buy like i did for L4D... unless say the game ships at a price less than $40... my only worry is that haveing a stand alone game released so soon is only going to rip the gameing community in half and it would be a much much MUCH better solution to have a stand alone expansion that adds its content onto L4D1 rather than makeing a seperate game

The bottom line is this. People did not appreciate what Valve was doing with the costant after release support for their games. There is no reason why the TF2 updates are free except for Valve being Valve. The L4D2 discussion is going on becouse Valve used to take forever to make games and now when they are doing something completetly normal in the gaming world they are critisized, becouse its an odd move for them and that is silly. Anyone who played Valve games before should know that this one will be fun and worth the money.

"Normal" is never a good justification for anything, because normalcy guarantees nothing about its rightness or appeal. And yes, it's quite understandable that there is some backlash, because Valve fans have gotten used to one model of business, and are now surprised by another one, which is not obviously beneficial.

I am surprised that gamers are acting like spoiled children who before got their candy for free but now they have to pay. SHOULD L4D2 be instead a free dlc? No it shouldnt, but COULD it be one? Well yes but the internal Valve decision was different so get over it and play something else instead of spitting in the face of good developers.

some of you guys are acting like little kids in a candy store whining for freebies. the average salary for a video game programer is about 75k a year do you know how many work at valve? making games cost money, crap playing games cost money so either get used to paying money or i would sugest a cheaper hobby. maybe valve should just stop chargning money for anything because we are pc gamers and we derserve it right?

Spot on. I wasn't much of a PC gamer with the Starforce debacle, but I was pretty mad about the DRM proposed for Mass Effect. So yeah, boycotts/angry e-mails can work if the effort is somewhat coordinated. Now if only I could get PC gamers to fight against the second most invasive DRM (Starforce being the worst) on the PC- Steam. Anyway, back on topic, when I played the L4D demo, I found it pretty weak. The AI director didn't seem that great and I knew that it was slim pickings in terms of content. I remember talking with a friend about it and he assured me that it would get tons of free content....so far, that promise has not been fulfilled. I don't know how overtly it was spoken, but I think a lot of PC gamers expected there to be a good amount of free content updates since they were charging full price for the thing. The one result I really hope happens as a result of this is the shattering of the image that Valve somehow cares about gamers. No company does. So we should instead focus on which company treats gamers best. I'd like to think that, if someone had experience with Stardock and their games, that Valve may not be that company.

how are they losing 350, 000 and how many people that join your little boycott will actually stick to it??

I didn't get anything for free - I payed full price for the game under the pretense that over time its lack of content will be addressed. The problem isn't that Left 4 Dead 2 costs money, the problem is that Left 4 Dead 2 is coming out only a year after the original did which hasn't seen any significant new content since release. Please stop making it seem that the problem is something entirely else when it's crystal clear what the problem really is.

I'm sorry, what?

EDIT: I got it now. Your spelling is terrible and I had a hard time understanding what the hell you said. Chet Faliszek stated that the team found making incremental patches in the same style as Team Fortress 2 difficult to do, and thus set upon making a sequel. He also stated that they would release new campaigns, monsters, weapons, etc. for Left 4 Dead. I don't understand how you didn't hear that in the video or how your brain didn't put 2 and 2 together, but there you go. If you need help with anything else let me know :)

Also, over 8000 members now. You can keep calling it "your little boycott" if you like, but it hardly seems appropriate.

They released half of a game with L4D and many folks thought that valve would release more content in the future, otherwise many would not have paid the price of a full game for L4D. Instead, they went about making a sequel. Valve sold out

I'm still having a good laugh at anyone that thinks they're "boycotting" a major game release.

Left 4 Dead 2 will still sell, and it will probably sell better than than the original. Feel free not to buy it, it won't hurt Valve's feelings. :)

Funny, when I bought the game, I was happy with getting exactly what came on the DVD. I also had a pretty good idea of what would be on the DVD, because I read a couple of reviews.

Actually, I ended up getting two more vs. mode maps and a whole new survivor mode for free later on, so, like you, I have nothing to complain about.

If people bought the game and crossed their fingers for extra content later I have no sympathy for them. When you drop 50-60 dollars on a game you should be making that purchase based on what is on that disc, not what MIGHT come out later.

And L4D had plenty of content for the retail price so frankly, I think those complaining are out of line. Valve doesn't owe any of you a damn thing.

Except that, as UIF noted, this move is extremely unlike Valve to pull. I mean, look at Team Fortress 2. They've added maps, upgrades to characters, and constant tweaks to the engines well after the game's release, all (at least to PC gamers) at no added cost to the player.

While I agree that technically, people shouldn't expect things for free after they buy a game, based on the track record of Valve, this move just came off as a bit odd/out of place to say the least.

That's like boycotting McDonalds because you couldn't get your filet-o-fish off of the dollar menu..
