The last 2 GOTY have been gimmies (at least I knew what they would be), but this year I'm not so sure.Gears and RE4 were easy to pick, they both were awesome and Gears was a new franchise, and RE4 revolutionized the series and the genre.

The Orange Box is good, but it's kind of crazy with so many games in one, but then again the GOTY has to be liked by a lot of people so I think it has a good chance, but it is still crazy especially with Half Life 2 packaged in.

One would think Halo 3 would have a shot, however I don't see the entire GS staff embracing it.

World in Conflict is original, but it seems somewhat esoteric, too esoteric for GOTY.

I wonder if Burning Crusade could have a shot.It is an expansion, and the more I think about it the less likely I think it is.WoW won in 2004 but it was pretty revolutionary and addicting at the time.BC is kind of the same game, but it is an interesting thought.

Now that I think about it, this year is like a rematch of 2004.Halo, Half Life and WoW are all in it.

Bioshock didn't get a super high score like some of the other games (but with the gimped rating system it is harder to tell what the score means). That said, I think I could see Bioshock making a run, having a good story, original setting, interesting game play and universal appeal.

Then you got all the crap yet to come out, Crysis, Mass Effect, Assassins Creed, and Mario among other have a shot.

There is my extend analysis.

For those who skip it, I think this is a tough year to pick and a bunch of games haven't come out yet, but here's the ones that I think have the best shot at it:

1.Orange Box

2.Bioshock

3.Halo 3

4.Wow

5.World in Conflict

Out of the games that haven't come out yet (let's just say they all get 9.5s) I'd say the ones that have the best shots at winning are:

1.Assassins Creed

2.Mario

3.Mass Effect

4.Crysis

5.Rock Band

Maybe if Call of Duty 4 is really freaking good, it could make a run, but I think it is hard for pure FPS to win.Serious Sam was the last one to win I think, and that was when PC and console was separate. Same deal with Crysis.

I think it really depends on whether Orange box is eligible or not. It's really multiple games rather than one, and it'd be weird to crown it as the "Game of the Year". I'm gonna guess Mass Effect or Super Mario Galaxy, although Halo 3 certainly has a chance.

FlaminDeath - What do you mean? GameSpot has never awarded Halo GOTY.

Halo 2 didn't even win best xbox game. It's in it just because of the 9.5, but the fact that it is Halo hurts it.

Mass effect will probably be my personal GOTY but when Ryan Davis says if he could only play one, he'd pick Rock Band over Mass Effect I just get the feeling that Mass Effect doesn't have the universal appeal require for GOTY.

Metroid Prime won GOTY in 2001 though, and I don't think a lot of people would argue that it has universal appeal. It's a pretty polarizing game experience when you think about it. A lot of people just can't get into it. I think an RPG with more action and shooting elements (Mass Effect) definitely appeals to a larger audience though.

As far as GS is concerned, Halo 3 is their god.

It'll probably be something stupid like Jericho though which was thoroughly disappointing, especially the ending.

I don't think Halo 3 can do. Halo is popular and Jeff set aside his own bias to give it a good score, but in general I think GS doesn't like Halo. Halo isn't original enough for GOTY anyway. Like I said Bioshock and The Orange Box have the best shot right now.

I think it'll be Halo 3, Mass Effect, Bioshock, COD4, and SMG on the list, with Halo 3 taking it overall.

Although Mass Effect is completely up in the air for me right now. If it pulls a KOTOR, it might not only be the best of the year, but the best of the entire generation.

Personally, I don't think GOTY has been released just yet. I think the coming weeks will see the release of GOTY. Whether that is Mass Effect, or Mario, or any of the other fantastic titles to come out, I just feel like nothing released so far this year is worthy of being the GOTY.

Normally I don't even like to interject on threads like this, but this particular post made me throw up in my mouth a little bit. 'Scuse me, son. Try picking up the drums in Rock Band on any difficulty medium or higher and see how well you do. Then talk to me about "little girls and kids." Kay? Thxbye.

More than likely it'll be Halo. If it's not, it'll sweep the readers choice awards.

But otherwise, I would have to go with Bioshock and (despite it not being out yet) Mass Effect.

Given that the GS team seem to be a bit partial to FPSs, I'd say it is Crysis or Halo 3 (even if it's just bcause no other Halo title has won GOTY). HL2 has already been voted GOTY (I think), soOrange Box is probablyout. Few other forthcoming games seem to have the necessary combination of quality, hypeand wow-factor needed for GOTY status. As much as I want it, I don't see Assassin's Creed scoring higher than a nine, so I think my third candidate would be Mario Galaxy. Unless there's a massive reality warp and Uncharted turns out TRULY amazing.

I'd probably say Bioshock at first glance, but considering how awesome several Super Mario Galaxy is, that may get the GOTY nod. Then again, Mass Effect could totally blow the pants off of both of those games...

I think Halo 3 really has a shot this year. It caused a hug impact on the entertaiment industry as a whole. I also think Rock Band (guess i'm a little girl), The Orange Box and Mario Galaxy have a shot.
My personal Game of the Year would be Forza Motorsport 2, but I guess first semester releaseses are overshadowed by the big guns in the second.

I think that Mass Effect and Halo 3 have a really good chance, but it's hard to say. Even Super Mario Galaxy has a chance. As for the Orange Box, I odn't know if they would include that. We'll just have to wait and see.

I don't see why Orange Box shouldn't be included.....it is the best package and value released this year in terms of what a gamer gets for the money spent. In fact, Orange Box is one of the best gaming values and packages ever released.

If Ninja Gaiden Black, which was a rerelease with improvements and some added content including the packs that had been released prior, can be included in the nominations for Gamespot's GOTY in 2005.....then Orange Box should definitely be allowed to be considered for GOTY in 2007.

I would be dead shocked if Super Mario Galaxy won GOTY on this site, just doesn't seem like the type of game they would give that award out to. So scratch that from the list.

dvader654

The same thing was said about Wind Waker in 2003.

If SMG turns out to be an excellent game that appeals to a large audience and offers a great experience for the money and turns out to be an innovative title with some original game design, which according to early reviews it seems to be just that, what would be so shocking about it winning GOTY.

It will probably be allowed for the running, but don't expect it to win it Overall GOTY, as half of the content was already released previously. Ninja Gaiden Black they changed/tweak several things in the main campaign that gave you a big incentive on replaying the game on higher difficulty settings (new enemies, etc it was a totally different than your previous playthrough) + the mission mode had a ton of content. Sure it was better than the original, but I don't think it was expected to take Overall Goty.

Edit: As for GS' Goty I think SMG has a good chance, along with Mass Effect. Don't overlook Rock Band though.

This is my prediction for the 10 GOTY nominees:

  • BioShock
  • Crysis
  • Halo 3
  • The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
  • Mass Effect
  • The Orange Box
  • Super Mario Galaxy
  • World in Conflict
  • 1 unreleased "surprise" game
  • 1 of these: S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars, Supreme Commander, God of War II

Some of these are filler, great games whose nomination is a recognition of their quality, but without much chance of winning (Zelda, World in Conflict, and the third released game), some that could do it, but I personally don't think they will (BioShock, Halo 3, Mass Effect, unreleased "surprise" game).

In my opinion, the biggest and most serious contenders are The Orange Box, Super Mario Galaxy, and Crysis. The Orange Box is just an awesome value pack, but far more importantly, it's super high quality. Even if you disregard Half-Life 2 and Episode One, you're left with Episode Two which is supposedly the best Half-Life ever, Team Fortress 2 which is the best cIass-based multi-player game ever, and an all-round favorite and innovative Portal.

The other two games aren't out yet, but Crysis seems like a big step forward for the genre and judging by the incredible demo, chances of it living up to its potential are extremely high. On the other hand, you have Super Mario Galaxy which seems to be opposite of every big game this year - a colorful and imaginitive "back-to-the-basics" pure gaming bliss.

I think its perfectly obvious that Crysis will not only win GOTY, but also:

-Best FPS
-Best Action Game
-Best Multiplayer Game
-Best PC Game
-Best Graphics
-Best Game Where You Can Throw Chickens
-Best Sports Game
-Best Game Starting with a 'C'
-Best PSP Game
-Best Game GodModeEnabled Will Never Play Because He's Not Man Enough To Handle It

If any of you disagree, then you're quite simply wrong. I'm dead serious! (especially about that last part)

I can only imagine the results of flatulation... scary.:?

So what do I predict? I predict....

*in Clubber Lang voice* "Pain..."

In all honesty, I really can't make a decision yet. I have to play the new games being released this month before making any attempt as to GOTY predictions and on top of that I just really suck at predictions. Really.

In a couple of weeks I will look into making an attempt though.;)

I just don't have much faith in Mass Effect after playing Jade Empire.  I suspect it will be an awesome game, but that some element of it, probably the combat, will be busted, or atleast lackluster when compared to the rest of the game.  I also think Halo 3's thunder has been stolen by many other games, and that it won't stand a chance against COD4, and Crysis as far as contenders in its own genre.

I fully expect that Super Mario Galaxy is going to charm the hell out of everyone and coast to victory.

...and as much as I want Uncharted to be a contender, I think it will go unnoticed.  It seems to have everything I want in a game, so as long as it isn't 5 hours long, it should be solid in my book.  It has the graphics to contend with most anything but Crysis, and the gameplay looks varried and fun.

I think God of War 2 should also be mentioned. It just came out so early this year, it's been forgotten.

Personally, I think it'll hit something like Mass Effect, Mario Galaxy, BioShock and GOW2.

Problem is Mass Effect and Mario will have all the hype and new game buzz.

For some reason, even though I stood in line to get the game at midnight, and really enjoy it, I just don't want to see Halo 3 come out on top.  I'd rather it went to a game that did something new.  Halo 3 does everything right, I've got no complaints there, I'd just rather see a game that is doing something new, even if it is a sequel, take the cake.
I really thought that the save game films, screenshots, and the forge would really change things, but I don't see them really contributing to the game's longevity.  Maybe that is just because the Gamespot GGD Halo 3 hype died down soon after the launch... right around when the Orange Box came out.  I don't know, I like Halo 3 a lot, but I haven't nerded out with it on the same intense level as Halo 2.  Maybe that is just a personal problem of mine though, and not a inherent problem with the game.

Well that was Zelda, of course its going to win. :P

The GS of back then does not feel like the GS of now to me. Back then Zelda winning was not shocking, at least to me it wasn't, if it was this GS though, yes it would be shocking.

It was shocking to me. I honestly expected KOTOR to pummel WW into the ground. One of the few times I did'nt agree with GS.

.............and uh, it isthe same GS, dude. They haven't gone anywhere. Perhaps you should be looking at the creator's of your favorite franchises for being too stagnant and dropping in quality over the years rather than GS's tastes all of a sudden changing. I know I have felt almost exactly the same as they have. For instance, OoT is my favorite game ever, yet I would'nt have given either of the lasttwo Zeldas the GOTY. Heck, I would'nt have even nominated the last one.

I said Bioshock before, and I'm gonna stick with it. Despite Halo's score and the score that I feel Mass Effect will deservingly get.

[QUOTE="AlwaysSoft"][QUOTE="FlaminDeath"]How can you even have doubt. Its GS Halo 3 wins everything :P.Dutch_Mix

The only award a Halo game has ever won here is "Biggest Disappointment" back in 2004. So I'm really not sure where your'e coming from.

Nice try, but Halo 2 won multiplayer GOTY here. (Beating out UT2K4 mind you) ;)

Yeah but theres one problem, COD4's multiplayer trumps it in every fashion imaginable.
