If it has no new functions like let's say, backwards compatibility (which I was really hoping for) then I don't see the point. I can probably go out and buy an 80GB with games for next to nothing.

I was really hoping that they would put backwards compatibility back into the PS3 with this new slim version. Oh well, I am glad about the $299 price though.

I doubt it, but good luck with that. Backwards compatibility is still a heavy enough selling point for resellers, I'd suspect.

I realize that "next to nothing" was an overstatement but still reasonably priced as I suspect Sony wants to deplete its stock of 80GB models. As far as I can see, all the slim has going for it is a 120GB hard drive, which is more space than I'll ever need on a PS3.

Im definitely going to be getting this. Been waiting for a price drop or a new model PS3 to come out. Im not worried about backwards compatibility since I still have my PS2 and its in great condition.

Cant wait for it to come out and Ill finally get to play MGS4, Little Big Planet, Killzone 2, Resistance, Valkyria Chronicles and Infamous. Woooooooooo!!!!!!

Though it may be little and all that, but it's really nothing to get exited about. I wouldn't hold out on buying a ps3 just to wait for a dwarfed version that may, or may not have the ability to play ps2 games

Well, 80GBs that had backwards compatibility ended with the MGS4 bundle, IIRC, so current ones don't have it at all, and will be priced the same as the slim, so again..I don't think you'll be able to get a PS3 for dirt cheap in any case.

How much did that cost?

The HDD i got from ebuyer.com for about 50 pounds as i recall. You can get cheaper / bigger now though. I still have like 240BG free and have loads of stuff on it.

All the change seems cosmetic to me, however, it means Sony will save on production costs which will be huge for them. At this point, Sony is on the path towards breaking even, but this isn't really going to affect the console race in any significant manner, IMO.

I realize that. And retailers (Amazon, for example) have been running some pretty great deals for the 80GB. Which, backwards compatible or not, I'd rather have over the new slim model. And I never used the words "dirt cheap."

Cool that the price cut is finally here and that its a full hundred bucks. After the announcement of the $250 price of the PSP Go, I worried Sony might either not cut the price or cut it a mere $50.

Sony just recently patented the ability to emulate the PS2's GPU on the PS3 not too long ago. I wouldn't count BC out. They are definitely working on it.

Um... there is no difference in the 'power' of any of the PS3s. They all have the same specs outside of bigger hard drives and smaller chips. The performance is the same.

I didn't ignore it just because I didn't reply to it.. I'm just reiterating why I started arguing with you in the first place over this whole matter, which probably stemmed from the wording of your first post which I read as meaning that you aren't going to get the slim mainly due to a lack of BC in it, and were planning instead on getting a BC 80GB PS3 at a deal of a price. I agree that probably some retailers will try to push out current 80GB models of PS3s, but most likely it'll amount to them bundling them with a game or two, and keeping them at 300 bucks (and knowing retailers, they'll try to push out rather trash games in the process).

1. No need for the attitude.

2. Your point is still wrong, more disk space isn't more memory. In terms of core functionality and power, all SKUs of the PS3 are fairly identical, IIRC, aside from the original 20GB model, which had some features cut from it way back when, but then was phased out shortly after.

150 milion PS2s out there, but people are so upset about PS3 not being to play PS2 games that they're willing to skip the PS3 altogether. Sony can drop the price to $99 and some people still wont buy one.

I doubt that very much. If anything, this will just help the PS3 move some units. I don't think it endangers any of the other consoles. Don't get me wrong, I think a $299 PS3 stacks up well against a $250 Wii, or a $199/299 360, but I don't think it is a game changer.

BC on the PS3 was always a big deal for me, especially from the standpoint of limited inputs on the TVs I was using, and also from the standpoint of memory card management. Virtual memory cards on the PS3 are almost a requirement for me when I'm doing RPG runs and such on PS2 games. Really, the only reason why I haven't ditched my PS2 altogether is due to the PS3 not being compatible with PS2 controllers, like my light guns, DDR pads, and Beatmania controller.

I wouldn't have gotten a PS3 when I did aside from the fact that I wanted guaranteed BC right off the bat.

Sums up my sentiments exactly.

This.

I just love how BC is a big issue all of a sudden.

150 milion PS2s out there, but people are so upset about PS3 not being to play PS2 games that they're willing to skip the PS3 altogether. Sony can drop the price to $99 and some people still wont buy one.

It has always been an issue for me. And I have a functioning PS2. But let me ask you, have you ever tried playing one on an HDTV? If not, it's very far from pretty.
