Koller said that Sony is not considering adding backwards compatibility support to the PS3, a feature stripped from the line a while ago but sometimes requested by some fans. "Backwards compatibility is off the table," he said.Kotaku
Well... so... that's that.
Sorry future PS3 owners. :(
EDIT: I just realized what this means. If my PS3 breaks tomorrow and dies the yellow light of death then the replacement PS3 I'd get from Sony probably wont be BC compatible. I always knew the multiple SKUs BS Sony pulled on this gen would come back to bite us, and if this happens to me then I'm..... I am.... I'm switching teams!
I've been waiting for a price drop, but now with college starting among other things I'll have to (mostly want to) wait even longer so I'll have more gaming time... maybe next summer. Spend 4-$500 get the PS3 and all the games I want and just blast through em'

They have enough spare parts to replace your system with the same type that you send in. My best friend's 20GB got the YLOD last week, and they are either fixing his or replacing it, because he is getting a 20GB back from them.[Quote="Kotaku"]Koller said that Sony is not considering adding backwards compatibility support to the PS3, a feature stripped from the line a while ago but sometimes requested by some fans. One of my PS3 owning friends said something about a rumor that there will be a PS2 software emulator update and a download service. Hopefully that will be true.
I was at work all morning so I'm late to the party, but great news! Finally I can afford a PS3...well, after I get a Wii of course. But it's still good news. My only beef is that Sony should lower the price on the PSP Go. Why get that for $250 when you can get the PS3 Slim for $50 more?! Makes no sense to me.ASK_Story
They may come to their senses and lower the asking price at TGS. I was actually thinking the same thing. This PS3 price drop has taken the PSP Go from pricey to absurdly overpriced. A fifty dollar difference between a portable that mostly has scaled down console games and only one analog "nub", and a top of the line HD gaming console with a built in high quality Blu Ray player, as well as access to the full fledged versions of the games PSP has bite sized versions of. Makes no sense at all. Really, this price drop changes everything when you directly compare the three consoles, the PS3 is by and far the best value of the three.
It makes the 360 Elite looked overpriced, and it gives the Wii absolute sticker shock. A fifty dollar difference between a PS3 and games like Uncharted 2 and GoW 3, and an overclocked Gamecube with waggle and mini-games? Mind blown.

I'm assuming that Nintendo will finally make that price drop to $199 this holiday season. If they're smart, they will do that. If they're greedy, they won't. I hate to say this but IF Nintendo doesn't drop that price, we're essentially paying $50 less than a PS3 for a enhanced Gamecube (since PS3 is also getting motion controls).
Also, there are already rumors and actual ads flying around saying the Elite will also be $299. Looks like Sony is calling the shots, finally...well, for now anyway!
And darn PSP Go has to be cheaper. You know what else sucks? Sony is forcing us to buy new memory sticks since our older PSP sticks won't work with the Go. How stupid and senseless is that?

You either don't own a Gamecube or you don't own a PSP. The last three quarters of 2008 were bad for the PSP (I pronounced it dead) but aside from that era, the PSP has seem a steady stream of not only console quality games (there is nothing bite sized about Pursuit Force, God of War, Syphon Filter, Tekken 5and Wipeout Pure) and just off the wall stuff like Patapon, Loco Roco and Holy Invasion of Privacy Badman!).
That being said, I agree that the pricing of the PSP Go is insane (raising the price as opposed to lowering it is just stupid) and made even worse by the new price of the PS3.

MS didnt announce a price cut today during their conference. I see no reason why Nintendo would.
The only reason they arent selling half a million units a month anymore is the current state of the economy. Once it starts to get better, the Wii will be alright. Holiday 2009 is only a couple of months away, and I'm sure it will be the biggest gift item this year as well.

True, but that doesn't mean it isn't going to happen. Remember, the last PS3 pricecut translated into the PS3 marginally outselling the X360 on a month to month basis up until MS responded with a pricecut months later at the beginning of the Christmas shopping season.
*Shrugs* Of course, I was pretty sure Sony was going to cut the PS3 price last year in response to MS's price cut, but it didn't happen until yesterday, so what do I know?

Well, I see what you mean. MS did drop the price of the Elite unit to $299 a couple of days ago. I guess the $299 60 GB model is discontinued, and they're happy with a $200 Arcade and the Elite unit going up against the Slim.
At least, this and the next month's NPD should be interesting. It's been a while since the hardware numbers weren't so damn predictable. Should be fun. :)

Nintendo won't need a price cut for at least another year or until their software sales become unacceptably stagnant. Realistically, they're not true competitors to MS and Sony, they never were. The market they've targeted is radically different from MS and Sony.
As for MS, they'll sit on their lead until the holidays. There's no need to make a move at a time when people aren't buying anything. While I applaud Sony's actions here, their timing couldn't be worse. This is the time of year where retail starts to go into the tank until late November. Kids are going back to school, families have come back from their vacations. By then, MS will have had plenty of time to consider their next move (hint: free Wi-Fi adapter would be a good start).
Im definitely going to be getting this. Been waiting for a price drop or a new model PS3 to come out. Im not worried about backwards compatibility since I still have my PS2 and its in great condition.
Cant wait for it to come out and Ill finally get to play MGS4, Little Big Planet, Killzone 2, Resistance, Valkyria Chronicles and Infamous. Woooooooooo!!!!!!

Or a saturated market and less AAA titles in the same period compared to last year. Sure the economy doesn't help but lets not use it as an excuse for everything. I've said this before I will say it again, the video game market is effectively split between the different companies, each of the big three have managed to carve out segments for themselves. Honestly I don't think each console impacts the others that much (except maybe the 360 and PS3 since they share a market).
I'd say whatever happens this Holiday period will be 'interesting'. Also I think Sony needs to push awareness of its top tier games if it wants to build on the momentum and effective re-launch of its PS3. We'll see I think Sony is going into this Holiday season stronger than it has since launch with the right price a great redesign and an expanding library of games.

We all know about the long-awaited PlayStation 3 price cuts at yesterday's GamesCom press conference, but a report from MCV states Microsoft had similar plans that were pulled at the last minute. According to sources, Microsoft was to announce a price cut to the Xbox 360 Elite, and may have replaced the Pro unit with it. However, one electronics retailer claims that Microsoft decided to delay the announcement while waiting for Arcade and Elite units to clear up more from shelves.
Though the Microsoft conference this morning was absent of any such announcement, the news means we could see one coming soon. Microsoft tends to make its retail pushes with pack-in games near the holiday season, so we may see this announcement still coming in the near future.
This might explain why the MS press conference was just Molyneux alternating between droning and whining.
Makes perfect sense. MS knows that the 360 Elite just doesn't stack up to the PS3 in terms of raw features for the same price. The 360 and the PS3 are both HD consoles with a 120gb hard drive, but the PS3 has built-in Wi-fi, built-in Blu-Ray, and free online play (not $50/year).
They'll probably release a $299 Elite with a pack-in, or (God forbid) a free year of XBL Gold.
What they really need to do is make Gold Accounts free, period. We're already crushed with advertisements on a paid service anyway.
Looks like Sony decided to forgo aesthetic appeal and shoot for a more practical design, which I'm not going to complain about since the asking price more than makes up for it. And we could certainly use another set of colors. Black is sooooo last gen. White and/or silver should be the new look. BladesOfAthenaWell what do you know, we agree for once. :)

I am pretty sure that if Nintendo sees the 360 beat the Wii in the NPD that they will respond. They may have tapped into a new audience but its not like they don't want the same people that buy a 360 or a PS3. Everyone I know has a wii, most have a 360 or a PS3 with it, they are not a new demographic, its the same dollars that is being spent on MS and Sony. If the Wii is not first place in the NPD consistantly Nintendo will drop it for sure. You're misinterpretting what I said. I stated that the Wii and the PS3/X360 are chasing different dollars, not that all of the Wii's fans sprang up this generation, lured in by minigame collections and a simplified controller. That is true of the vast majority of Wii fans, but there are hardcore gamers who bought the Wii for the same reason they bought the GC and the N64, to enjoy Nintendo's weekly release of Mario/Zelda/Metroid games.
However, while the tastes of the GC set are different than those of the new gamers Nintendo has drawn in, they are also quite a bit different from those of most hardcore gamers (third party support for the GC was a fraction of that of the Xbox despite installed bases of similar sizes just because the GC audience tended not to buy games without Mario, Zelda or Metroid).

I interpretted your post just fine. Nintendo is chasing both the PS3/360 dollars and the new audience they tapped into. They want it all and if they see the 360 surpass it in sales they will drop the price to compete. The Wii has absolutley zero chance of winning the hardcore market. Ever. If Nintendo is ever going to be serious about getting the hardcore gamer, they will have to garner up the third party support the competition has. Unfortunately, the third party support is mostly milking the Wii as a minigame machine to make a quick buck. I see the flood of crap games as less of Nintendo's fault, and more of the third party developers fault. When it comes down to it the hardcore Wii owners are only going to be starved for quality games for so long before switching systems and abandoning it in the first place. (I know I was one of them) The lack of proper third party support, like the last two Nintendo systems is its worst enemy. Zelda, Mario and Metroid sure are awesome games but they are only 3 when the competition is offering hundreds upon hundreds. So the original point Carnage is saying that Nintendo is "chasing different dollars" is 100% accurate. The Wii has absolutley zero chance of winning the hardcore market. Ever. You guys can start putting everyone in different little categories but there is one console game market. Nintendo, Sony and MS are all fighting for the top spot.
I think Sony is well aware that they can't win this gen, so their strategy is to just stick with it for as long as possible until the next cycle, where they can have another shot of claiming back what was theirs.

You guys can start putting everyone in different little categories but there is one console game market. Nintendo, Sony and MS are all fighting for the top spot.
Different audiences have different tastes. Like I've said before, first parties interested in expanding the appeal of their platforms cast against type (a point MS and Sony executives have explictly made in various interviews, and backed with money).
MS pretty much cornered the market on shooters (a massively popular genre) last gen, so towards the tail end of last gen and this gen, Sony has fundedseveral shooters (Resistance 1 and 2, KZ2, Warhawk, MAG). Sony cornered the market on jrpgs last gen, so last gen MS brought in lots of wrpg talent to the console arena and created Mistwalker, made up of the some of the industry's top talent (IMHO Mistwalker's games have been creative failures, but its the thought that counts) and written checks to obtain exclusivity of several jrpgs.
More recently, Sony and MS want a piece of the casual market that has made the Wii so successful, so they are rolling out motion tech peripherals and gathering up third party supporters and throwing internal resources behind the projects.
By way of contrast, Nintendo is releasing Mario/Zelda/Metroid games which are hoovered up by its longtime fans (former N64/GC owners), casual games which appeal to the new audience its discovered, and nothing else.
Looks like SCEE threw in GT because they are cognizant of the fact that the PSP Go's price is insane. I wonder is SCEA is going to make a similar offer? A lower price would be better than a pack-in, but no point letting the perfect be the enemy of the good.
I'm not on the market for a Go (I like my PSP 2000 just fine and I have an 8 GB memory stick) but if the wave of developer support the PSP is enjoying is continue, Sony needs to sell systems.
Sony Europe boss Andrew House is confident the high price of the PSPgo will not put off early adopters, although he admitted there is a significant gap between the current PSP-3000 and the new model set to launch this October.
The PSPgo will sell in the UK for £224.99 and in Europe for €249. However, Sony hopes the free offer of Gran Turismo PSP will help sweeten the deal.
"I think, clearly, there is a delta there between PSPgo and the existing PSP-3000," offered House, speaking to VG247.
"We, at least for Europe, were very keen to put an initial offer in place that would reward the consumer who jumps on board first. Therefore, I think the offer that we announced yesterday, that those initial purchasers will be able to get GT for PSP absolutely free. I think that goes a long way to addressing that," he said.

That's the thing, there might be a segment of the population willing to spend on console gaming as entertainment but the market is hardly one massive lump. In fact this generation has shown that catering to different demographics, diferrent markets even is the way of the future as the console makers focus on what appeals to their target audience.
Sony, MS and Nintendo are all fighting to have the largest installed user base this doesn't mean they are fighting for the same people and in fact the expanding market shows that its impossible to ignore how it is ultimately through appealing to the unique individuals out there that market share can be won. What I am ultimately trying to say that it is by putting people into different categories that these companies figure out what appeals to whom.
[QUOTE="BladesOfAthena"]Looks like Sony decided to forgo aesthetic appeal and shoot for a more practical design, which I'm not going to complain about since the asking price more than makes up for it. And we could certainly use another set of colors. Black is sooooo last gen. White and/or silver should be the new look. ShinobishyguyYeah but the dirt and dust doesn't show up as easily on black consoles.
Clean your house from time to time? My original ceramic white JPS2 still looks great.
Anyways, yeah, I think the matte finish would look a lot better if it came in different colors.
