I have a 60GB PS3 and I really don't see the need to upgrade. Mine is backwards compatible. If they ever make the slim backwards compatible maybe I'll consider buying one.

There are a lot more 'hardcore' games for Wii than just Zelda, Mario, and Metroid.

To be fair, this year has been better than most for the Wii, with House of the Dead, Deadly Creatures, Mad World, and a few upcoming games like No More Heroes 2 but when taken as a whole the Wii has a paltry selection of quality hardcore games and always will. With quality games like the aforementioned Madworld and House of the Dead tanking at retail why would any 3rd party developerseven bother?
Looks like the X360 Elite pricecut is happening August 30th. Competition is a beautiful thing (at least for us consumers).

[QUOTE="GodModeEnabled"] The Wii has absolutley zero chance of winning the hardcore market. Ever. If Nintendo is ever going to be serious about getting the hardcore gamer, they will have to garner up the third party support the competition has. Unfortunately, the third party support is mostly milking the Wii as a minigame machine to make a quick buck. I see the flood of crap games as less of Nintendo's fault, and more of the third party developers fault. When it comes down to it the hardcore Wii owners are only going to be starved for quality games for so long before switching systems and abandoning it in the first place. (I know I was one of them) The lack of proper third party support, like the last two Nintendo systems is its worst enemy. Zelda, Mario and Metroid sure are awesome games but they are only 3 when the competition is offering hundreds upon hundreds. So the original point Carnage is saying that Nintendo is "chasing different dollars" is 100% accurate.Bigboi500Starved for quality? I don't think so. If you mean "starved for western games" maybe so. Looking at Wii games through the eyes of a western/pc/360 fans eyes one might think that. There are a lot more 'hardcore' games for Wii than just Zelda, Mario, and Metroid.
It's not great in terms of Japanese games either. It does have some quirky Japanese games worth buying, but the library is not good for a winning consoles' library.

I'm looking forward to Muramasa (which comes out soon) and Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, but yeah I agree there aren't many hardcore games, although games like Boom Blox do hold up well.[QUOTE="DPhunkT"]I would have bought this. My wife won't let me though.S0lidSnake
Time to leave the wife my friend!
Yeah, really. games come first.... JK
Yeah it looks 'ok' I guess. I liked the Playstation 3 logo on the original better then just the PS3 on this one and it would have been great to get BC back on it but I really like the price so it could finally be the time for me to get around to picking one up.
Sony admits they losing money on the Slim at $300, though Kaz claims the Playstation division is now profitable overall (which given the PS2 and PSP is a different thing than saying the PS3 is profitable).
http://kotaku.com/5344701/sony-losing-money-on-ps3-slim
When The Times asked Sony exec Kaz Hirai if Sony was losing money on the PS3 Slim, the exec said this:
If you're just talking about the hardware alone, the quick answer is yes. That makes good headlines, but I don't actually know that that's the true nature of the business that we're all in, whether it's PlayStation, Xbox or the Wii. I think the better indicator is to look at the business as a whole platform, to ask: are you profitable in terms of the hardware, software and peripherals. And the answer to that question is yes on a gross profit level since the last fiscal year.
I think Kaz is wrong about Nintendo taking a loss on the hardware of the Wii. Nintendo claims its not takingsuch aloss and the Wii is a sub-Xbox1 system which retails for $250 so they're probably telling the truth.
"We will make a profit on the entire Wii proposition out of the box--hardware and software," Fils-Aime told Reuters. "That really is a very different philosophy versus our competitors. We are a company that competes only in the interactive entertainment space, so we have to make a profit on everything we do."

Yep, I'm in the same boat. My PS3 is still running great, and it has PS2 BC. There's just no need to upgrade.
However, I'm still excited about the slim launch; increasing the PS3 user base is a good thing.

Doesn't it seem kind of odd that MS is putting the $299 360 elite against the $299 PS3 slim? If you just do a straight feature comparison (free wi-fi, free rechargeable controller, free "gold" online play, free blu-ray player) it seems that the PS3 slim comes way out on top.
I kind of thought that MS might throw in another perk to sweeten the deal (free year of XBL gold? free wi-fi adapter?).

I don't think consumers focus much on hardware (due to its hard drive, modem and faster processor, in terms of hardware, the Xbox was a much better value than the PS2, but people preferred the PS2's library, so it didn't really matter) so I don't regard the pricing parity/feature disparity as something that will necessarily work to MS's disadvantage.
Sales are going to come down to games, and MS has an easier row to hoe than Sony since they are rolling out (among other games) Halo, whereas Sony is rolling out games in much smaller franchises and original games (unless the GT 5 in 2009 rumors are true).
Carnage has a good point, the hardware doesn't matter to average consumers. If it did, Xbox would have outsold PS2 by a wide margin. In the last generation, with PS2 you had to buy a memory card, a network adapter, (before the slim) and a multi-tap if you wanted more than two people in on multiplayer. Whereas you got all of that in one piece of kit with the Xbox at the same price. XBL still cost money of course too, but back then the selection of online games on Xbox cleanly just blew PS2 out of the freaking water, as opposed to how much closer the selection is now.
Good point, Carnage. Maybe the introduction of the PS3 slim won't really have that much of an impact.

I believe the pricecut is important (consumers buy systems for their games, but most have limits on what they are willing or able to pay) but I don't think the fact the PS3 has more features than the X360 is going to mean much.

Most of the games you mentioned haven't been released, but the NPD numbers of many of those that have including LKS (under 12K) and Zak and Wiki (116K in 11 months) kind of argue against making hardcore games for the Wii.
Publishers that support the Wii with hardcore games are focusing on hardware numbers and ignoring past low software numbers in the hope that the right game will unlock the secret hardcore hearts of Wii gamers (a position Sega and Vanillaware have been open about).
Given the disturbing Play cover (I'm quite familiar with Murasama since I am hoping it is ported to HD systems, but when I saw the cover, I thought some hentai game was in works) perhaps Murasama will corner the market on tentacle violation fans but I strongly suspect it won't do much better than LKS.
There just isn't much appetite among the longtime Nintendo fans who make up hardcore gamers on the Wii or the casual gamers that make up the overwhelming majority of Wii owners for original hardcore games (though Mario, Zelda and Samus will do as well as they did on the GC and I'm sure DQ will put up big numbers in Japan).

According to rumors generated by a two different retailer leaks and a less ambiguous than usual MS denial, the X360 Elite's hard drive is being bumped up to 250 GB.
One listing for a 250GB Xbox 360 could be an accident. A typo. But two in two days, on opposite ends of the planet, well, that's something else.
This is an ad from South African retailer BT Games, showing a "Super Elite" Xbox 360 that packs a 250GB HDD. Interesting. Certainly makes the German version seem a lot less like an error and a lot more like a genuine product.
Perhaps even more telling than the South African listing, however, is Microsoft's response to yesterday's Amazon Germany reveal. Asked for comment on the supposed leak, Microsoft did not respond with their customary "We don't comment on rumours and speculation", instead telling Kotaku "We've made no such announcement".
No, you haven't. A couple of retailers have made it for you!

I need all those huge HDDs become ubiquitous fast, so I can pick a 60 gig one from the dumpster for cheap. Damn proprietary, ridiculously overpriced HDDs.SteelAttackThey still sell the 120 gig HDD for the 360 for $200 up here in Canada  They should package a free sample of kyjelly with the thing for that price.

Actually, I would consider VC to be more of a cult hit than a bomb.
And of course there are going to be some misses as well as hits, but the reality is that hardcore games, more often than not, tend to be more successful on the HD consoles, which is reasonable given the nature of the audience and their willingness to spend large sums of money on this hobby.

I agree. It's a shame more people don't buy those cult/niche titles no matter what system they're on.Please Log In to post.
