That's right, we have a project on our hands. Instead of going with the customary Player Elimination format to decide our favorites, we are going to create the NFL Union's All-Time Team.

This is going to take a pretty long time. Every former NFL player is eligible, though some are obviously more worthy to make the team. Noactive players, please. As eager as I am to place Brett Favre on our All-Time Team, he is not retired yet.

This is how it will work:

I will state a position, such as Quarterback, Linebacker, Center, etc. For the next 24 hours, the floor is open to anyone, Officer or Recruit, for discussion and submission of candidates. To submit your candidates, simply create a list of whom you believe are the best 8-10 historic players at that position(not necessarily in order).

The Officers and myself will then review each list. When at least 2, preferably 3 Officers have come to a consensus on which submitted list is the best, those players will become the candidates at that position. An Officer cannot approve his own list(meaning 2-3 other Officers must approve of it) and the approval period will not extend beyond 24 hours. If no consensus has been reached by the deadline, I will make the call.

After the candidates for one position have been named, we'll move on to the next position.

Once candidates for each position have been named, Step One will be completed. Step Two will consist of narrowing the candidates, and Step Three will decide the All-Time Team, but I will not discuss the details of those steps at this time. That would just add length to an already lengthy post.

Things to remember:
- Make your lists diverse in time period. I guarantee that not all of history's best QBs came in the 80's and 90's, so don't forget about the guys that played before that.
- You'll probably get an NFLUPS point just for submitting a list, and the list we pick will get 3 more. So it's in your best interest to help create this team.
- Don't submit a list that has already been posted. It's not worth your time. If you do find that the list you want to post is already here, try changing one or two players to make it more diverse.
- Different positions may require slightly different protocol, as more players from that position will make the team.

We'll start tomorrow, hopefully. For now, the floor is open for your thoughts, questions, etc.

That is correct. Down the road theteam may be revised, but only to consider retired players.

QB and RB should be pretty easy, figuring out the best ever is hard, but making a list of the greats will be easy. Offensive Linemen would probably be impossible for me to list.

I will definitely have to think about some of the positions but others will be easy as pie. Good idea Wally and I know this will help out our activity level.

This is a good idea. There will be a few positions that will be decided pure on debate, it should be fun though.

Since it's well past midnight here and I'm still up(not for much longer though), let's get started with the first position.

Defensive End, 8-10 players, no particular order

I'll go first just to start things off, but this will probably be the only time I go first. Note: If a player was known to play 2 positions in his career, his primary position will take precedent. If the 2 positions are on opposite sides of the ball(offense, defense, special teams), the player can be nominated for both positions.

Reggie White
Bruce Smith
Deacon Jones
Howie Long
Jack Youngblood
Carl Eller
Jim Marshall
L.C. Greenwood

I downgraded my last 2 names and left a major guy off the list so that this will serve more as an example than a serious entry.

Alright, it's been almost 24 hours, late in the day, so I'm going to go ahead and close the nomination box for DE's.

Now comes the point where the Officers collaborate. Out of the lists submitted, choose the one you think is best. Those people will be the candidates.

I was getting pretty scared there for awhile. I kept seeing some of the essentials(Reggie, Bruce, Deacon, some others) but for a minute there I wasafraid nobody would mention Gino Marchetti. I breathed a sigh of relief when I read sfgiantsfan's list. He gets my vote.

All right, we've got our nominees for Defensive End, so we can now move on to the next position.

I wanted to stay on one side of the ball until all of it's positions are filled, but I kind of like the idea of just jumping around randomly.

Let's do an "easy" one: Quarterbacks, 8 players(no more, no less)

This should be interesting, and not as easy as you might think. Off the top of my head, I can think of at least 12QBs that deserve candidacy. It's going to be tough to narrow it down to just 8.

- Non-active Players
- From the position I state
- as many players as I say can be on it

Other than that, it's completely up to you who is on the list you make, and your fellow Officers to decide if it's good enough.

I'll tell you this though: variety.

Sorry geaux, gotta limit certain positions to 8 candidates, and QB is one of those positions. You need to pull 2 guys offyour list.

Please see my above post to geaux. The reason I put "8-10" in the rules is because some positions will have 2 players on the All-Time Team(such as DE), and thus would need more candidates. 8 is the standard.

Terry Bradshaw and Steve Young were very difficult for me to leave off the list, and Roger Staubach to a lesser degree.
