Malcolm Kelly comes away with similar results after running again

After the controversy surrounding last week's pro day at the University of Oklahoma, Sooners wide receiver Malcolm Kelly had another workout Wednesday afternoon in Norman.

After complaining last week about the way the workout was conducted, Kelly ran this time on what the scouts considered to be a fast track -- and he posted similar numbers to those he ran last week.

Three NFL teams were on hand -- Cleveland, Green Bay and the N.Y. Giants. Once again, he caught passes from former Nebraska QB Eric Crouch.

Malcolm Kelly (6-3 7/8, 225): Ran the 40 in 4.63 and 4.65, had a 4.15 short shuttle, 6.83 cone drill, had 14 reps in the bench press and once again looked good catching the ball. Crouch threw him 22 "catchable" passes, and Kelly caught all but one. --NFL.com

Chad Johnson says he won't attend team functions, demands trade

Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson left no room for doubt Wednesday: He wants out of Cincinnati as fast as possible and he doesn't plan on reporting for any future Bengal function -- mandatory or voluntary.

What spurred Johnson's immediate reaction was a statement made by quarterback Carson Palmer that indicated Johnson had told Palmer he would be at the team's mandatory minicamp in mid-June. Johnson said that wasn't true. "I want to make this very clear,'' Johnson said Wednesday. "I don't know where he got that. I made no assertion to Carson that I would do that. Nothing has changed from what I've been saying for three months that I don't want to play for the Bengals.'' Johnson made one of his strongest statements in saying he is not planning on reporting to any team functions because he wants to be traded. "I want to be traded before the draft, and if that doesn't happen, I want to be traded as soon as possible,'' Johnson said. "I don't intend on reporting to anything.'' The Bengals said they have no comment in response to Johnson's statements. A team spokesman pointed to coach Marvin Lewis' statement at the owners meeting that he has fully discussed the Johnson situation and didn't feel it was productive to talk about it again. Johnson is skipping the team's offseason workouts as he tries to push for a trade. But the Bengals have also made it clear that they have no plans of trading him. Lewis has said repeatedly that the team has no plans to deal Johnson, despite the wide receiver making the rounds of radio and television talk shows to voice his displeasure about his situation in Cincinnati. In a February interview with Jim Rome, Johnson said he felt he was being blamed for the Bengals' problems and disappointing showing last season. "I'm not allowed to say. I get the blame; the so-called best player, I'm the problem," he said. "Someone in-house is spreading this. Maybe they want me to quiet down [and] stop being me. That is not going to happen. I can't function that way. I tried it. It sucked. There was no excitement."

Last month, on ESPN's First Take, Johnson again hinted at wanting a trade.

"I want to continue my career wherever I have the opportunity to win a playoff game and get to the Super Bowl. That's where I want to be," he said. Wednesday, the Pro Bowl wide receiver said he was surprised by Palmer's comments about his possibly reporting to mandatory camp.

"I wish he would stay out of my business,'' Johnson said.

Saints explore trading up in the draft

The Saints have made inquiries with the Rams about what it would take to go from New Orleans' scheduled 10th overall pick all the way up to St. Louis' at No. 2.

New Orleans is looking at add a stud defensive player, and it could opt for LSU DT Glenn Dorsey, a pick that would be enormously popular in that area, or even Ohio State OLB/DE Vernon Gholston, who would be a terror on the turf in the Superdome.

People who have spoken with the Saints insist the talks are not substantiative, more informal, but the fact that one team has pursued moving up is noteworthy. This year, no team has been willing to move up to Miami's spot at No. 1, even New Orleans. The Saints are unwilling to pay what it would take to satisify the Dolphins or the player picked at No. 1.

As interested as the Saints might be in moving up, the Rams are in no rush to relinquish their pick. They recognize that they're going to come away with help for one of their lines -- either Michigan tackle Jake Long or Dorsey.

In an upset, the Rams could always opt for the top-rated player on their board -- running back Darren McFadden. But it's up to the Saints -- or any other team that's interested -- to entice the Rams with an offer that is good enough to get them to surrender the No. 2 overall pick. --Adam Schefter

Has anyone reminded Chad what the Bucs did to Keyshawn or the Eagles to Owens for being an ass? Can teams still suspend w/out pay for 'conduct detrimental to the team', or was that option bargained away by some candy-ass / NFL admin? I can;t remember...

Oh I don't blame Chad a bit for wanting out of Cincy. They blown two years of their window of opportunity by wasting so many draft picks on thugs --and dumb ones at that. IMO, Chad should've said he wants out and don't expect me to report for anything from the beginning -- then sat out the first 10 games.
He's talked so much junk if he doesn't sit out, now he's really gonna look like a punk.

On the subject of Sanders and losing -- I have more respect for him as a person for walking away from losing and not looking back than I can say about the way Emmitt went out... playing for a perennial loser just to be padding his record. (Smith is still the better RB of the two, imo)

Is Chad = DeAngelo? "I ain't playin for no loser for another year!" Say what? How much you gonna pay me to lose? Well aight then, I'll lose for another year or three.

Sources: Dallas Cowboys offer Barber deal for $30 million,Running back wants package for between $40-60 million

Marion Barber made it to the Pro Bowl last season without starting a regular-season game. Now, he's looking for a big payday.

The Cowboys have held preliminary talks with the running back's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, according to multiple sources, and are offering a financial package in the $30 million range.

Barber wants a package between $40 million and $60 million. In February, the Cowboys placed the $2.562 million tender on Barber, who is a restricted free agent. If another team wants to sign Barber, it would have to give up first- and third-round picks if the Cowboys choose not to match an offer.

Rosenhaus, who did not return a phone call seeking comment, has a good working relationship with the Cowboys, and it is unlikely that a deal won't get done.

But Rosenhaus' request that Barber receive a contract similar to some of the top running backs in the game caught the Cowboys somewhat by surprise, the sources said.

Barber's asking price is comparable to deals given to Kansas City running back Larry Johnson (five years, $43.2 million), Washington's Clinton Portis (eight years, $50.5 million) and San Diego's LaDainian Tomlinson (six years, $60 million).

The Cowboys, according to the sources, believe the deal that free agent running back Michael Turner signed with Atlanta in March (six years, $34.5 million with $15 million in guarantees) is close to what Barber is worth.

Dallas is also willing to give Barber a contract close to what Baltimore gave Willis McGahee last year, a seven-year deal worth as much as $40.12 million, if the last two years of it are picked up.

Barber earned his first Pro Bowl berth while backing up Julius Jones last season. He had 204 rushes for 975 yards with 10 touchdowns.

The Cowboys made Barber the starting running back for the NFC divisional playoff game. When the season was over, the team elected not to re-sign Jones, who is now with Seattle.

Coach Wade Phillips has named Barber the starter for 2008.

Maybe not among the Joe Six-pack fans -- but people who know their football will say Smith > Sanders. This is one where homer has got nothing to do with it.

Never at any point during their careers would I have considered trading Smith for Sanders unless I was getting a first-rounder too, at the very least! And, I'd immediately trade Sanders again for another pick!

I could fill paragragh(s) w/ the reasons why this isn't homer BS. If you're serious, you already know em.

Chiefs' DE Jared Allen talking to Bucs, Vikings

Jared Allen's days with the Chiefs appear to be numbered.

Allen, the NFL's reigning sack leader, told FOXSports.com that the Vikings and Buccaneers have held trade talks with the Chiefs and he anticipates a deal will get done prior to next week's draft.

"It's a situation that works out best for both sides," Allen told FOXSports.com. "I can go to a team that is competing for a championship right now. The Chiefs can get valuable draft picks to rebuild with."

Allen said he is flying to Minnesota and has a visit set up with the Vikings by this weekend. He is tentatively scheduled to meet with Tampa Bay next week. The Jacksonville Jaguars had previously inquired with Allen's camp as well.

The Pro Bowl defensive end is the Chiefs' franchise player, but re-signing in Kansas City will be a problem as the team is looking to stockpile draft picks.

Allen said the two sticking points are working out terms of a deal with a new team and the Chiefs agreeing to compensation for a trade. A package of first- and second-round picks or one of first- and third-round picks in the upcoming draft have been discussed as possible terms. It's unclear at this point what it will take to get the deal done.

Allen, a four-year veteran, led the league in sacks in 2007 with 15.5 and has 13 forced fumbles in the past three seasons.

Shockey OK with trade talk

Jeremy Shockey has not formally demanded a trade from the Giants, but he has made it very clear he wouldn't be upset if it happened, either.

The brash tight end, who missed the Giants' championship run with a broken leg, has been sounding off for more than a month about his frustrations with the Giants, according to NFL sources. And he has told friends he would welcome a trade to the New Orleans Saints, who made an offer for him last month. LINK

Hiding Roy (Williams) will be difficult this season

This is a make-or-break season for Dallas Cowboys safety Roy Williams.

He might be the only man who has started in the Pro Bowl who has so many questions about his role in his organization. Some people at Valley Ranch don't trust him on the field anymore.

Don't be surprised if Williams is benched on third downs this fall. Teams love throwing to the tight end on third down to keep the chains moving.

Did you see the Cowboys' schedule? It is loaded with some tough tight ends. Williams has struggled in pass coverage the past two seasons. Badly.

The Cowboys open in Cleveland. That means Williams will have to cover Pro Bowler Kellen Winslow. The Browns would be foolish not to try to isolate Winslow on him.

Some of the best tight ends in the game are on the schedule this year: Chris Cooley (Redskins), Jeremy Shockey (Giants), Todd Heap (Ravens).

Randy McMichael of the Rams has been a Pro Bowl alternate.

Vernon Davis was the 49ers' second-leading receiver.

The Buccaneers' tight end duo of Alex Smith and Jerramy Stevens combined for 7 TD receptions.

Heath Miller of the Steelers caught 7 TD passes in '07, and Donald Lee of the Packers snagged six.

Philly's L.J. Smith will get two shots at the Cowboys' safety. Ben Utecht of the Bengals is no slouch.

Seattle is the only team on the schedule that is weak at the tight end position.

Williams knows he's not the same player he was a few years ago. His ears work. He knows the critics are out there.

He did himself no favors in the locker room last year by being suspended for a horse collar tackle on Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb. Wade Phillips also chose not to start him for two games. He didn't register a single sack in 2007.

The fifth straight Pro Bowl trip to Hawaii came to him because he was the first alternate and was chosen to replace the late Sean Taylor on the NFC roster.

Dump that No. 31 jersey, because he's going back to the No. 38 he donned at Oklahoma.
The old No. 38 was a feared man who made plays and made hard hits.

When Cowboys training camp opens in Oxnard, Calif., lots of eyes will be on Williams to see if he can return to his once dominating form.

His career as a Cowboy depends on it. --Newy Scruggs, sports director at NBC 5 (KXAS)

this is a day old, but i want u all to see it, its a good read:

Raiders will regret spending millions on 'average' Hall

The NFL's new math is mind-boggling: $80 million for Nate Clements, $59.5 million for Asante Samuel, $70 million for DeAngelo Hall.

What do those three players have in common besides a bank account now flush with cash? They are all cornerbacks. And as pro football's offseason transitions from free agency to the draft, paying that kind of unprecedented dough for that position is at the heart of an increasingly contentious debate. So, let's leap into this argument.

Here's the question: Is the never-ending quest for the next great cover corner often paved with fool's gold?

Here's the answer: Yes.

Let's take the latest example. The Oakland Raiders have won only 19 games over the past five seasons. Since 1990, the only other team to win fewer than 20 games in a five-season span was the Bengals, who won 19 from 1998 to 2002, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

What was the Raiders' biggest problem in 2007? They couldn't stop the run. The defense allowed 4.8 yards per rush last season, worst in the league. It was the highest average ever allowed by an Al Davis team.

So what did Oakland do? With Warren Sapp retiring, the Raiders signed Giants defensive tackle William Joseph -- but mostly for depth. Their biggest free-agent pursuit was a cornerback: Hall, who ran himself out of Atlanta. In a trade, the Falcons got second- and fifth-round draft picks from the Raiders, who promptly made Hall a very rich man.

And what did the Raiders get? One of the most overrated defensive backs in recent league history.

One of the great "SportsCenter" highlights of Hall's career is from a game against the Steelers in 2006. You remember that -- when Pittsburgh wide receiver Hines Ward sprinted past Hall for a spectacular 70-yard touchdown catch and run. What's so remarkable about that play? Ward was missing one shoe.

And that play was unusual. Most opposing receivers beat Hall deep while still wearing both shoes.

Hall, who has been to two Pro Bowls, possesses many of the qualities great cornerbacks have. Great speed. Remarkable athleticism. Terrific leaping ability. Huge ego.

"I always feel like I'm the best guy out there," Hall once said. "When a guy catches a pass, it almost seems like luck to me. If a guy makes another catch, I'm like, 'Two? How did that happen?'"

In reality, Hall is an average cornerback who takes needless chances, gives up a staggering number of big plays, has never helped his team win anything and wore out his welcome with the franchise that drafted him in just four years.

"Everybody pumps him up like he's Deion Sanders," Lions receiver Roy Williams said. "But he's not Deion Sanders. He's DeAngelo Hall. He's not the shutdown type of corner that everybody expects him to be."

In three of Hall's four seasons in Atlanta, the Falcons ranked 22nd or worse in pass defense, and only once did they manage a winning season: in his rookie year (2004), when he was a part-time starter. So don't expect Hall's presence to improve the Raiders' pass defense dramatically in 2008.

But don't blame Hall for the folly of his contract. If the Raiders want to pay him $70 million, Hall should take every penny.

However, there is plenty of evidence that throwing good money at mediocre cornerbacks destroys teams' salary caps and does not improve their pass defenses.

Let's look at the San Francisco 49ers. In 2007, they jumped at the chance to sign Clements from the Buffalo Bills. The Niners' deal with Clements was eight years for $80 million. And what did the Niners get? From 2006 to 2007, the opposition's passing yards went up (from 3,817 to 3,826), interceptions went down (from 14 to 12) and sacks went down (34 to 31). And that's with the NFL's defensive rookie of the year, linebacker Patrick Willis.

It's obvious what the Niners really needed: a pass rush. That's why coach Mike Nolan persuaded his front office to sign defensive end Justin Smith from the Bengals. Did the Niners overpay for Smith, who had just two sacks last season? Maybe so. But they had no choice. You can cover all day, but if you can't rush the passer, you're not going to win in today's NFL.

The New York Giants proved that. Did you watch their Super Bowl XLII victory over the New England Patriots ?

In case you were one of the few Americans who missed it, that was indeed the most prolific offense in NFL history shut down by Steve Spagnuolo's defense. And guess what? Spags had no shutdown corners.

So, it didn't take big-name corners with big contracts to shut down Randy Moss and the most productive passing game in the history of pro football.

In the past five years, the head of league officiating, Mike Pereira, has made calling defensive pass interference and defensive holding downfield a point of emphasis -- thus diminishing the effectiveness of cover corner play.

Here's more evidence: In 2007, the Detroit Lions traded corner Dre' Bly to the Denver Broncos.

And what happened? The Broncos' pass defense promptly got worse. It surrendered more touchdown passes: 13 in 2006, 25 in 2007. Denver's interceptions went down (17 in 2006, 14 in 2007). So did sacks (35 in 2006, 33 in 2007).

In 2007, Indianapolis Colts president Bill Polian, who never gets enticed by free-agent seductions, let cornerback Jason David walk away. Another smart move by Polian. David was signed by the New Orleans Saints for four years, $16.5 million.

And, you guessed it, the New Orleans pass defense went downhill. The opposition passed for more yards: 3,122 in 2006 to 4,122 in 2007. Completion percentage was up: 56.3 in 2006 to 62.4 in 2007. Touchdown passes surrendered were up, too: 26 in 2006, 32 in 2007.

Why? Sacks were down. The Saints had just 32 sacks in 2007, after collecting 38 the year before David arrived.

What's more, in 2007, New Orleans allowed 15 pass plays of at least 40 yards -- tying the Baltimore Ravens for most in the league, according to Elias.

This offseason, hoping to improve their last-in-the-league turnover total, the Eagles jumped into the free-agent market, signing Pro Bowl cornerback Samuel to replace oft-injured Lito Sheppard. Samuel had 16 interceptions over the past two seasons -- tops in the NFL and double what Sheppard had for Philadelphia the past two years.

Samuel's addition to the Eagles' roster should provide the kind of turnaround in pass defense that coach Andy Reid was looking for. But Reid hedged his bet on Samuel. To improve Philadelphia's pass rush, after signing Samuel, the Eagles acquired defensive end Chris Clemons from the Raiders.

Which brings us back to Oakland and the decision to sign Hall to a megadeal. Nobody has been better at marketing himself than Hall. However, a quick look at Hall's impact in his four years with Atlanta tells a different story:

Saints-Falcons, Nov. 26, 2006: In the final seconds of the first half, Drew Brees unloaded a Hail Mary toward the New Orleans end zone. Hall was in position to knock the ball down and prevent a touchdown, but instead tried for a needless interception to pad his stats. He missed. And Saints reserve Terrance Copper came down with the football and a 48-yard touchdown that turned a 14-6 lead into a spirit-crushing 21-6 advantage as the first half ended. The Saints went on to win 31-13.

"I was being kind of lazy," Hall explained after the game.

Then there was the Falcons-Panthers game this past September. The Falcons had lost their first two games of the season but led Carolina 17-10 late in the third quarter. They had outgained the Panthers by more than 200 yards and were on the brink of salvaging their season with a win.

But as Hall left the field before a Carolina fourth down, his trash-talking with Panthers receiver Steve Smith got so out of control that Hall was flagged for taunting -- his third penalty, for a tally of 67 yards lost in 82 seconds.

What was Hall saying to Smith?

"I've been in as many Pro Bowls as you; I make more money than you," Smith said. "Just real immature stuff."

The Panthers -- thanks to the fresh set of downs -- scored a touchdown two plays later, then another before the quarter was over, eventually winning 27-20.

"You have to try to control yourself," Falcons teammate Warrick Dunn said.

On the final day of the 2006 season, the Falcons' hapless secondary was torched for a career-high 324 yards and three TDs by Eagles backup quarterback A.J. Feeley. Hall didn't spend much time covering anybody that day, but he certainly made an impression on Eagles receiver Donte' Stallworth.

"He called me a bum," Stallworth said. "He kept saying he's been to two Pro Bowls and I haven't been to any. Well, this bum is going to be in the playoffs next week while that two-time Pro Bowler is out on the golf course."

Miami Dolphins are close to landing Jake Long

The Dolphins flirtations with Michigan tackle Jake Long over the past few weeks have been well-publicized but this morning, with six days to go before the draft, a league source is indicating that a contract agreement is nearly in place.

Word that Miami initiated talks with Long's agent, Tom Condon, surfaced almost two weeks ago. Condon actually was in South Florida to meet with Dolphins officials. Miami's also made overtures toward Vernon Gholston but little other progress has been mentioned.

Meanwhile, with Jake Long off the board, the St. Louis Rams are a lock to go with defense at No. 2 and, according to the same league source, the camp of Virginia defensive end Chris Long is very confident that's where he'll be headed.

Hall is a ****ing joke for making those comments. Just another one of those selfish players that only cares about himself. Definitely not someone I'd be counting on to be the leader of my defense.

I think it's 6 interceptions tops for Hall next year, though. But still. Wasn't Hall the one complaining about losing in Atlanta? Then, he got boated off too this hellhole called the Raiders. Second only to the Knicks in where players go to lose big time. They prostituted him and made him stay with huge wads o' cash. If he gets 20 interceptions this year, I'll look at him as a big time loser. Sure, there's been Cal Ripken Juniors out there who have had many seasons of losses, and Allen Iversons out there, too. But there is a world of difference between them and a this guy named DeAngelo Hall. Instead of just prostituting over to the highest pay, they either went on with faith, or they just went on to a winning team.

/end rant.

He was solid, but I'm just glad he finally called it quits because the d-line last year was a major weakness that needs work.

Anquan Boldin wants trade

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports Anquan Boldin has requested a trade.
The Cardinals have reportedly informed Boldin that they will not deal him, but as always a team like Dallas, Washington, or Philadelphia might blow them away with a draft-day offer. Arizona has not set aside the idea of extending Boldin's contract, which is assuredly what he truly wants in the end.

Saints acknowledge discussions to trade up in draft

METAIRIE -- General manager Mickey Loomis confirmed Tuesday that the New Orleans Saints have been in discussions with teams in the top portion of the draft about the possibility of a trade, but said those talks are only in the preliminary stages.

The Saints currently hold the No. 10 pick in Saturday's NFL draft, but have been rumored to be interested in moving up as high as No. 2 -- possibly to pick LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey.

"Well, I'd say this," Loomis said, "We've talked to a number of teams in front of us about the possibility of moving forward. It's all preliminary discussion - you know, nothing concrete. We've just expressed a desire to talk about it with a number of teams."

Seattle pursuing Jeremy Shockey

If the Giants decide to trade Jeremy Shockey this week, it won't necessarily be to the Saints.

Whether the Saints or Seahawks up the ante between now and the start of the draft on Saturday will likely determine whether the Giants make the bold move to dump the 27-year-old Shockey, who has been expressing his frustrations with the Giants to his friends this offseason. According to team sources, the Giants aren't actively trying to trade him, but they are listening to offers and have discussed the possibility.

Some in the organization are convinced Shockey will be traded before the first day of the draft is over, although most sources have indicated it could go either way, depending on how high the offers go.

One source also indicated that other teams have expressed an interest in Shockey, although none more than the Seahawks and Saints. The source did not say who those teams were, but one possibility is the Atlanta Falcons, who are looking to replace tight end Alge Crumpler. The Falcons, by the way, have three second-round picks (34th, 37th and 48th). --New York Daily News

Dolphins seeking draft choices for Taylor

The Miami Dolphins, having signed Michigan's Jake Long as the first pick of the 2008 NFL draft, are shopping Pro Bowl defensive end Jason Taylor in hopes of acquiring another first-round pick, according to media reports in South Florida.

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported that according to two NFL executives, the Dolphins are trying to land another first-round pick in order to secure a player they're concerned won't be on the board when they lead off the second round with the No. 32 pick overall. And the Palm Beach Post reported that Taylor, who is still competing on ABC's "Dancing With The Stars," has quietly requested a trade and understands he could be on the move if the team can make the right deal.

There are four players of particular interest to the Dolphins, according to the Sun-Sentinel: Florida DE Derrick Harvey; Auburn DE Quentin Groves; Michigan QB Chad Henne; and Delaware QB Joe Flacco.

Jets trade Dwayne Robertson to Broncos

Finally this deal got done. Does it ever seem like Denver picks up 4 or 5 new DL every offseason?

Depends on the pick. I might be alright if we got their 2nd in return as well.
