You'll have to forgive me for giving way too much information in this post, but Peter said the magic words (not STD, don't worry).

I honestly haven't read many of his famous books, but a fellow Gamespotter recommended the Dark Tower series to me several years ago. It's Stephen King's take on a fantasy tale, seven books long, thirty-plus years in the making, and it's fantastic. Like ag suggested for his book, you should read the foreword, "On Being Nineteen," to get a feel for the series (and King's writing style, if you're not familiar with it). This is King's baby... the work that defines him. It really is a masterpiece.
And if you choose to read it, you won't be asking for any book recommendations for awhile. Depending on the amount of time you can dedicate to reading, it might take years to complete. And they'll be years well spent, trust me.
The first book is a little rough, as King admits himself, since it was written very early in his career. All of the books that follow are a bit more in King's casual conversational style. In his own words, the story is a mix of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings with Sergio Leone's The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. A western quest. And it's framed by Robert Browning's "Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came," which is a creepy, surreal, nightmarish long poem based on a passing character in King Lear. It sounds kind of random, but it works.
