http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/04/17/us-afghanistan-women-idUSBRE83G0PZ20120417

About 150 Afghan schoolgirls were poisoned on Tuesday after drinking contaminated water at a high school in the country's north, officials said, blaming it on conservative radicals opposed to female education.

Since the 2001 toppling of the Taliban, which banned education for women and girls, females have returned to schools, especially in Kabul.

Some of the 150 girls, who suffered from headaches and vomiting, were in critical condition, while others were able to go home after treatment in hospital, the officials said.

They said they knew the water had been poisoned because a larger tank used to fill the affected water jugs was not contaminated.

"This is not a natural illness. It's an intentional act to poison schoolgirls," said Haffizullah Safi, head of Takhar's public health department.

The Afghan government said last year that the Taliban, which has been trying to adopt a more moderate face to advance exploratory peace talks, had dropped its opposition to female education.

But the insurgency has never stated that explicitly and in the past acid has been thrown in the faces of women and girls by hardline Islamists while walking to school.

Education for women was outlawed by the Taliban government from 1996-2001 as un-Islamic.

It's crazy to think that at one point the middle east was the most advanced area of the world in almost every aspect.

The sad thing is many places within in the Middle East are more primitive now both socially and economically than they were 100 or 200 years ago.. Multiple invasions, imperialist policies, incompetent leaderships, etc etc will do that to a place..

Off topic a bit but "A Thousand Splendid Suns," (the spiritual successor to "Kite Runner") deals with several issues pertaining to Afghani women during the Taliban's reign. It's interesting to see how they were first heralded as heroes and how quickly it changed. Anyways, I'll never understand why these "men" see it as un Islamic for a women to educate herself.

Constantly warring and being invaded for decades might have something to do with it.

Proof that either God does not exist, or he does exist and is either indifferent or malevolent. Why would a benevolent God allow innocent children to be poisoned?

born in the USA, grew up in Saudi Arabia in the early to late 90's. Now I go back and forth a lot between the two. currently in college in the USA, will likely go back there for work. Don't know if i'll stay there forever, simply because i have no idea where i'll be in the long term future.

I am a citizen of both countries and i call both home. I'm also a practicing Muslim though granted i got a few of my own beliefs when it comes to God and afterlife. that said though. feel free to belligerently attack me based on assertions that can be made for recognizing myself as 1. Muslim and 2. a Saudi citizen, i've pretty much heard it all at this point.

as honestly as i can say it is a love-hate relationship. they love American goods and media, even if you hear clerics talk about how sinful it is and all. but what most Saudi's really hate is American government and specifically their policy towards the Middle East. There is also an issue of immorality which is huge over there, but the feeling i get with most Saudis is this "that is what they do over there, what is important is what we do here". Many of the conservative types and even some of the 'patriotic' types have a huge issue when the West starts making social demands.

But as far as the immorality stuff goes, i see Saudi a lot like the 1950's America. all the $hit is going on, but it's all behind closed doors.

There is an obsession with keeping a proper public image, which really isn't that unique in the Middle East or the East for that matter.

The feeling i get nowadays about the reaction to 9/11 is one of two reactions. 1. That was an awful tragedy done by evil men, and 2. That is too bad but they had it coming. and by #2 i mean it in the sense, that if something terrible had happened in the Muslim world because it was messing with another country, Americans would probably think "that sucks.. but you know... it IS the Middle East and they've messing with them Israeli's for a long time now". it's a false lamentation.

There is still a sense of false delusion that Saudi's couldn't possibly have done the attack. That there was no way good Muslim men could do that. Some people have woken up to this problem when terrorists starting attacking the kingdom itself in 2003. but there are still those who can't believe it.

and i am a bit tained because i am a halfy, half white and half Arab (technically white by US government), and people generally know i'm from America, have an American mother, or know i live there for months or years at a time. So if someone honestly thought Osama was the 'man' they probably would never say it to my face.and i also don't associate myself with the hardcore conservative types.

trust me when i say, at times i'll defend Saudi, but a lot of times i won't. and though i have options as to where i can live and work, i have more care and have more at stake with what goes on in Saudi then what most people on this forum who ceaselessly criticize ever will.

I'm working nights now (which is creating an intellectual and emotional "haze" over every waking moment) and I need something to keep me awake. I really don't care... I'm just looking for some entertainment. Being an American site with a largely North American population, Gamespot slows down considerably at night... to my chagrin. And as soon as I think I've escaped the stress of life and am on the up-and-up, more negative things befall me and bring me down (being caught in the middle of "gossip girls" at work (and they are men), nearly getting evicted for missing half of our rent among other, more private things). It's depressing and frustrating knowing that the 5 years and $10,000 I spent getting an education in religion amounts to essentially nothing professionally, on it's own without further education (B.Ed., M.A., M.LS., etc.). I think my entire frustration over the past several months has come from the knowing I took these courses more as a way of personal exploration than professional, career-oriented education. But I digress... There are things about the Qur'an and Islam that definitely is not favorable for women, and I find it amazing how some people are able to not only reconcile those things, but remain faithful to the deity that supposedly revealed this "divine word" for the benefit of humanity. Religion works best when the focus of worship and prayer is centered around the community and people, and God merely becomes the facilitator rather than "magic sky daddy" watching your every move and thought, waiting to send you into the fire for any wrongdoing.

I can't say that I know where you are coming from because I am not half Saudi and I have never been to the Middle East. But your response was kind of what I expected in that as a "pure" American I feel the same way about Saudi Arabia.

So you judge Muslims just because of terrorism? You're only looking at the actions of the extremist Muslims whilst ignoring the non-extremists who repudiate terrorism and al-Qaeda. As a Muslim myself I am against terrorism for the loss of life it has caused, not just in South Asia and the Middle East, but also in the West-you can't just say that all Muslims are terrorists. If I was to say that all Christians are terrorists because of the actions of Timothy McVeigh in 1995, would I be correct? No, because that's just looking at an extremist rather than the average Christian.
