they should change the terms used so that people can't try and use that "debunking" method. but then i guess the ignorant people would just try to find something else

We, the Indiana Board of Education, maintain that science students should be taught that girls may be made up of sugar and spice, and everything nice, because Cell Theory is just a theory, and alternative viewpoints should be presented.

[QUOTE="theone86"]

[QUOTE="Novotine"] nah see, evolution is an actual science. religion has nothing to do with science. religion is anti-science

in any case, it seems people don't understand what something being a theory truly means. it's not a fact or a law, but it is still considered the "norm", maybe even a temporary law, until it can be proven otherwise.

evolution is a theory, religious creation stories are fairy tales. looks like evolution is winning right now.

needled24-7

What people need to understand is that the colloquial term theory=the scientific term hypothesis. The scientific theory is more comprable to the colloquial definition of proof.

they should change the terms used so that people can't try and use that "debunking" method. but then i guess the ignorant people would just try to find something else

It's Sir Arhtur Concan Doyle's fault really, we should parade him around as a pariah for popularizing the colloquial usage of the word theory. Seriously, though, I'm personally going to stop using the term in that context and use hypothesis instead. But yes, they always find something else. It can actually be explained through scientific means, the law of entropy. There is only one state where an individual understands the difference between the colloquialism and the scientific term, therefore as the number of instances where this disctinction must be understood (i.e. number of people) increases, the probability that the desired state of understanding will be maintained decreases.

Actually, I would like to conduct a scientific inquiry into this. First off, preparing my methodology, how can I test to see if females are made up of sugar and spice?

Don't bring your fancy science into this. For some things, we just need faith. If you have any questions about the subject, please see either the bible, or the verdict in the 1985 case Johnny vs. Cooties.

Ah yes, my methodology would put me at greatly increased risk of contracting cooties, but this also presents an opportunity to study the effects of cooties on humans in an actual case study. I know I'm taking an awful risk, but I'm willing to take one for the team, or as Glados would say, for science. I'm doing science...among other things.

is there actual visible evidence of something evolving into something else over millions of years? no... :? if there isn't proof of one thing then you can't eliminate the possibility of something else being true.

Depends...is it an additional class on religious study? I don't recall hearing anything about Indiana removing the teaching of science in school so I don't think it's replacing it. In addition.....is an elective?

LJS9502_basic
from what I've heard its more like additional material for existing classes that you have to cover first before you are allowed to move on to evolution in hopes that teachers won't have time to get to evolution. At least I get to have the pleasure of voting against this guy.

(Didn't feel like readin the whole topic, so don't me me if this has been mentioned) How bout instead of forcing either upon the schools, why not have both? Although I believe in science more, I also believe In what's fair. Let the kids decide what they want to learn.

Because they're kids, because presenting evolution in the same light as creationism skews their view, because creationism is not scientific and should not be presented alongisde scientific theories in a science class, because they can learn about creationism in the appropriate setting (like a church); any and all of these are acceptable answers to your question.

Religion has no place in the science class. They want the "the Earth is 6000 years old, God is a real thing controlling the universe, animals were made as they exist today, dinosaurs are a lie perpetrated by the devil" Creationism taught in science class. Not just the "God created the universe through the observed methods discovered in science" creationism. There should be a comparative religion class that is as mandatory as science... but these folks would be against that as well, because their children would learn about more than just Christianity.

I don't think you should be allowed to decide to learn a lie as the truth. Plus kids, especially very young ones, often don't actually decide things for themselves, social pressure from parents, classmates, teachers, can and does influence someone's willingness to learn or believe in something. And if the parents believe in creationism, their friends do (as I'm sure in this region many would), and the teachers teach it, even alongside science, why would they believe or admit to believing the science? They're still going to be pressured to fit in...

I'm fine with teaching competing theories, but creationism isn't a competing theory, it's nonsense. "You should be open-minded, but not so much that your brain falls out"

---

They can have a theology class, but it can't be mixxed with science. And even that, I wouldn't find acceptible in any public education system.

This is one of those situations where I know I shouldn't be laughing because these are real kids being actively stupified by someone who's supposed to be teaching them, but what was said was so ridiculously absurd that I just can't help myself.

Is there any methodology to investigate a supernatural hypothesis? It appears to be ad hoc. I acknowledge philosophically, science may be refuted by logical arguements, such as semantics, which is apriori epistemology, however empirical (scientific method) assumptions are interpreted to be 'rational'. Science is open to the concept of falsification and is practical, unlike creationalism.

Yes, theories are not theorems, scientific methodology is not an axiomatic derrivation of proof, it is the usefulness of models (physical laws as the basis) defined in the empirical spectrum. Thiests require more assumptions (supernaturalism), therefore are not favoured by occhams razor. Also, evolution satisfies the required conditions as an empirical fact, however it is not a law.

Although the bill as written could be used to create a comparative religion class, its sponsor, Senator Dennis Kruse, has made it clear that he hopes to see it foster the teaching of creationism in science classes. The original text of the bill explicitly mentioned creation science; it has since been modified to mention a variety of religions, including Scientology. In a brief interview, Kruse expressed disdain for evolution, calling it a "Johnny-come-lately" theory.

I've chatted with a couple online. I asked for decent arguments in favor of creationism and I was directed to a youtube video with Ken Ham. He said that scientists draw believe in evolution due to drawing conclusions based on fossil evidence, and his argument against them was, "Really? Were you there?" along with, "But what about the duck billed platypus?"

I can see how someone can say "Hey, the big bang was god's work" or that evolution is "divinely inspired". But this literal creatonist stuff I just cant understand how anyone believes it.

When I first heard that certain groups in the US were attempting to form an anti-intellectual culture to further their own political power I thought it sounded as much like a conspiracy theory as America behind 9/11 and grassy knoll. Thankfully if it is a conspiracy theory they're extremely overt about it. Maybe because it already came to fruition years ago.
