According to numerous scientists, human speciation (when normal apes can't breed with the human acestor apes) started about 6 millions years ago.

Now, hominization (when apes turn into humans) started about 1.8 million years ago. According to scientists, apes started to be "human" once they started believing in life after death. This means that in order to be called human, we need in life after death.

So this means that atheists are apes???

The teacher brought this up to discussion in class but the class ended before we could start the discussion...so OT, what do you think about this???

EDIT: I think the teacher couldn't express himself well, or if he truly meant what he said, well, lets say he is just ignorant.

I think the teacher tried to say: "Humans differed from apes when they started to bury their friends" No need for the afterlife, just the burial.

Now another questions rises: "Why did this primitive people buried their dead with gifts and stuff like that?"

Here is a quote from Wiki (I swear I didn't put it): "The contemporary study of hominization is found in archeology and often looks for signs that mark out human habitations from pre-human forms, examples of this being the use of burial gifts etc." SO yeah... I also thought there were different reasons for us to be human other than rituals

Except for 96% of our genome!

A 4% difference in a genome made up of millions or even billions of genetic sequences is still quite substantial, so if your saying that 4% of our Genome codes specifically for believe in the afterlife then your are completely wrong.

Well, it's not that humans necessarily believe in life after death. The key is that humans are able to grasp the concept of life after death. That's the distinction. Atheists can definitely handle the idea of life after death without grunting and throwing their poop everywhere. (Well, most of them, I'm sure.)

If evolution is true, everyone is an ape. Homo sapiens are part of the Great Apes.

If there is a scientist out there who taught people that people are not human until they start believing in an afterlife, that scientist needs to be fired.

It is not a requirement for a man to believe in an after life to be considered human. A species ability to believe in an after life only shows that said species has achieved a higher level of thinking.

That means nothing like what you said. All that says is that modern humans created habitation structures distinct from those in which non-humans dwelled in, which relates to the evolution of the human brain. Has nothing to do with whether they believe in an afterlife.

So then can't it be said that the difference between man and ape is brain capacity, not religious belief? thus negating the argument that non-believers on on the same evolutionary level as apes.

Ok..now I get it, the teacher might had misundestood what he was really saying. Maybe is because his first language is spanish and couldn't find better words to express himself in english :P Now I think he meant that Humans started to be humans and not apes since they buried their dead relatives. But why did this first humans started to bury their dead with gifts and stuff like that???

We're still apes regardless of spiritual beliefs or lack thereof according to evolutionary theory, so I don't get how it can be disparaging to consider humans as apes based on taxonomic connotation.

I know about the classification of humans. However, the TC said his teacher considers apes and humans separate. So in this case, he is making the point that if you believe in religion you are a human, and if you are an atheist you are an ape - a lower life form. And my point is that it makes more sense if it was reversed.
