Apes are apes

Humans are not and never were

4% is more than youll ever knowSonKev

Humans are members of the biological family Hominidae, which is better known as the "great apes". So, yes, humans are and always have been great apes.

Of course. It's obvious that humans are not "and never were"s before. Who would be stupid enough to think that?

Actually I think that his teacher's intention was a direct mocking of atheists. His theory is so beyond insane and childish that I really wouldn't pay attention to such a teacher if I were in his class.-Jiggles-

Hence, an idiot.

To the TC: I'd recommend you spend more time reading a science textbook than listening to whatever your teacher has to say. His opinion is obviously diluted with bias and that could negatively affect your own education as well.

Indeed. :P Actually and unfortunately there are lots of such teachers...

Well, to start, I am disappointed with this thread. After reading the title, I got all excited that I was gonna earn a good laugh out of some Christian extremist and possibly find some new quotes for FSTDT. Instead, I am given this loathesome thread. The only creationist in this thread is silenthps, and everybody else got done dealing with him already.

Second, your science teacher (or whoever you gained that information about) is an idiot. What separates humans from other primates isn't our beliefs, but our genetic structure. Although humans are certainly one of the four great apes (alongside gorillas, chimpanzees and orangutans), atheists aren't any less human than, say, a Jew or a Muslim. The fact that humans began to believe in an afterlife early within their existance only shows an increase in intelligence through evolution--the actual beliefs don't make us human or not.

As I already said, I think the teacher was trying to convey the message that scientists consider "man" as we know ourselves today to have started to exist when a clear ability to invent abstract ideas emerged - which today is discernable from cave paintings or remains of rituals showing religious beliefs (religion is abstract almost by definition). I'm not too sure about this and base it only on my somewhat lacking knowledge about archaeology but that was my first thoughts when I read the OP. Maybe the teacher really is a nuthead.

If so, then the teacher did a remarkably poor job explaining it correctly.

Merely the question: "Are atheists apes" because they believe that... shows that the teacher just wanted to force a negative answer about atheists. There was no real argument behind it.

His accusation could have been that "atheists are wrong about this" and yet he wanted to call them apes. That is mockery...

Well I don't quite trust the TC on remembering the exact phrasing of the claim so I'm still sceptical. If the teacher really is stupid enough to imply that atheists aren't human he's not worthy of all this attention anyway. :P

You could copy-paste the relevant posts to a word document, print it out and leave it in his mailbox. Anonymous psychological terrorism ftw.
