a = without, theism = belief in a god. Atheism = without belief in a god.

Gnosis = knowledge. Agnosticism = without knowledge. Sorry, but there it is.

If you don't positively believe in a deity you are an atheist. If you are utterly confused you're an agnostic. That's my interpretation anyway.

jimmyjammer69
So you're saying that there is a way to prove or disprove the idea of a god?
And this explains it very well: "If a man has failed to find any good reason for believing that there is a God, it is perfectly natural and rational that he should not believe that there is a God; and if so, he is an atheist... if he goes farther, and, after an investigation into the nature and reach of human knowledge, ending in the conclusion that the existence of God is incapable of proof, cease to believe in it on the ground that he cannot know it to be true, he is an agnostic and also an atheist - an agnostic-atheist - an atheist because an agnostic... while, then, it is erroneous to identify agnosticism and atheism, it is equally erroneous so to separate them as if the one were exclusive of the other..." Gnosticism is the state of knowledge of your belief. It is not a belief in and of itself.

A gnostic atheist believes there to be no God and insists that they know for a fact there isn't one.
An agnostic atheist believes there to be no God and doesn't know that for sure.
An agnostic theist believes there to be a God but doesn't know that for sure.
A gnostic theist believes there to be a God and insists that they know for a fact there is one.

Some people claim that these definitions get overly complicated but I think they work perfectly.

I liked this analogy:

There is a difference between beliveing and knowing something. If someone asks you the question are you atheist and you answer agnostic you havnt answered the question. Its much like if someone asks you are you an american and you answer im a male. Ya you are a male but a male can be american or not.RingX5

agnostic butt for the case of debates athiest, i accept there could be a god but until i get definate proof i'm an athiestmarkop2003

ya same here.

I'd say I am atheoagnostic lol.

I do believe there is some sort of higher power, be it God or nature or physics or aliens or whatever lol. I am also somewhat spiritual and believe in the power of the mind, meditation, and stuff like that.

Its just hard to really believe in anything. I need evidence

Thanks for clearing that one up for me. Have to admit I've got a big problem with the distinction between belief and knowledge though. I would say I know that the sun will rise tomorrow and that I know the date of my birthday, but I admit that either could, in some imaginable way, be wrong and hence both are just beliefs. What could possibly constitute gnostic theism or atheism? surely both have to be no more than beliefs (Is there anything which constitutes knowledge as opposed to belief?)

I do believe there is a God.

Organized religion, however, is a big no-no for me.

Well, I'd say I'm 85% atheist. Well I mostly think there isn't a god, I'm not going to completely disregard the idea either.

I suppose I'm agnostic atheist...

Agnostic shouldn't be an option on this poll. It seems that most do not fully understand these terms.

Atheist - doesnt belive in a god

Theist/religous - believes in a god

agnostic understands that he/she can not know wether a god exists are not.

There is a difference between beliveing and knowing something. If someone asks you the question are you atheist and you answer agnostic you havnt answered the question. Its much like if someone asks you are you an american and you answer im a male. Ya you are a male but a male can be american or not.

Much like how agnostics can be religous or not.

and for the record im atheist

Well, yeah, there is no evidence for the absense of a deity and the absence of evidence is no evidence in itself. I know that I could very well be wrong but I just assume the clairvoyance of atheism as a temporary haven.

I've pretty much always been an atheist. I think I stopped believing in "god" at around the same time that I stopped believing in Santa, really. The theory of a god or gods makes about as much sense to me as Santa.

There should be an option for a irreligious theist. I know a few of them. The concept of god shouldn't be restricted to religion.
