Indeed, 4/4 from Roger Ebert. Some highlights from his review:
"Avatar is a technical breakthrough. It has a flat-out Green and anti-war message. It is predestined to launch a cult. It contains such visual detailing that it would reward repeating viewings. It invents a new language, Na'vi, as "Lord of the Rings" did."
"Like "Star Wars" and "LOTR," "Avatar" employs a new generation of special effects. Cameron said it would, and many doubted him. It does. Pandora is bevy largely CGI."
"I've complained that many recent films abandon story telling in their third acts and go for wall-to-wall action. Cameron essentially does that here, but has invested well in establishing his characters so that it matters what they do in battle and how they do it. There are issues at stake greater than simply which side wins."
"It takes a hell of a lot of nerve for a man to stand up at the Oscarcast and proclaim himself King of the World. James Cameron just got re-elected."
Seriously, after reading this I cant possibly understand how haters can complain about this movie anymore. Sure blah blah blah film critics suck blah. OPEN YOUR EYES, this is the next STAR WARS, the next LORD OF THE RINGS. Its amazing!
Hey it's back up to 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, plus legendary film critic Roger Ebert has given it 4/4 stars.
Next I'd like to see this get some serious Oscar gold.

After these reviews I wouldnt even be surprised. Roger Ebert compared it to both Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. And we know how well those films did at the Oscars...

Yep and now I'm REALLY excited for this movie.
BTW this was a great comment on RT:
"Thank you Ebert. I really hope those internet-nerd-hater-f@gs stop trying to spread their stupidity for the last week before we get to experience this film."
Not to be a downer, but Roger Ebert pretty much gives everything 4 stars.sammyjenkis898
To be fair though, he has said on coutless occasions that his stars mean nothing if you dont read the context of the review. In the past he has given films 3/4 and still given them a thumbs down. He has given some films 4/4 but has never made the claims that he is making for Avatar. Not even for Lord of the Rings or anything of the sort.

Oh, I realize that. I'm just saying that he tends to go overboard on certain films. I'm waiting on Armond White's review. :P[QUOTE="Samurai_Xavier"][QUOTE="sammyjenkis898"]Not to be a downer, but Roger Ebert pretty much gives everything 4 stars.sammyjenkis898

If he gives it a rotten review, it's worth seeing.Ebert and Roeper are still pretty much my two favorite critics. Even if their show is long gone......
But I'm looking forward to Roeper's review soon.
They all say it's visually a feast but it's got cardboard characters and a slightly contrives story :|Toriko42Yeah, that's pretty much what I was expecting. I'm still not looking forward to this.
Not to be a downer, but Roger Ebert pretty much gives everything 4 stars.sammyjenkis898except david lynch's output (though he may have given mulholland dr. a good review. i forget that one). he has some sort of mysterious undying hate for him.

Mulholland Drive is the only film of his that he gave a positive review. His reasons for disliking Blue Velvet are ridiculous.
It definitely is not at 91% (currently) on RT simply because it looks good. If it didn't have a solid storyline, good character development, great acting, etc, it wouldn't even be close to that. Lets not forget how poorly films are often rated on RT. 40% rotten there means a pretty solid 7/10 on IMDB most of the time.
I thought this was going to be a good movie as soon as I saw the trailer. When the trailer first came out, easily 70% of the people in OT were saying they thought it was going to be a terrible failure. That makes its success oall the more sweet. :D
Regardless, I loved James Cameron's previous movies(Terminator 1 and 2, Aliens, Titanic was decent), and even though the movie is flawed, maybe the flaws weren't that big enough to affect the movie, ever thought of that, hell, reviews also praised the story and character development, and I think action scenes as well, it did look great in the trailers after all, don't forget that guys and gals.;)
Even one critic said this: "You have to see Avatar to believe it, and even then it's nearly impossible to register all of what's on screen."
I can't wait to see it.

Wow, this old Roger Ebert interview when Titanic was coming out really shows some incredibly similar parallels to Avatar. It was exactly the same. People really love to cheer for failure when these kinds of movies come along.

I'm going to see it. The CGI and the Avatars look great, but I'm not too impressed by the production design on the vehicles, the miliary weapons, etc.
Wow, Tilt Rotor technology..... in the 22nd Century, really, James? And those helicopters look.......bland, even today's Osprey used by the USMC look 10x better. I know Cameron was trying to relate our current military technolgy with this movie, but damn, they all look ugly, especially that Ramjet propelled space plane, uggh. How the hell does that thing hover, with those massive wings? VTOL? No thanks.
Sorry, but for a guy who went out of his way to make Space Marines popular, making dropships look cool, making the Pulse Rifle and Smart Guns look cool and sound thunderously different, as in not sounding like a typical M16 firing (Aliens earned an Oscar for best Sound & Editing in 1986), AVATAR seem rushed, lazy and lack of imagination, from a production design point.
Yes, I'll admit, I was expecting something brutal, something beyond the "Whoa that's so freaking cool!" factor, beyond what we've seen in the Colonal Marines.
There's my 2 cents.
VERTIGO47
Except that all these ships can fly. Everything was designed taking into account real physics and were approved by Boeing engineers.
And there's a reason in the script for using guns with bullets. All the military tech on Pandora is actually outdated too.
I know my user pic makes me seem biased, but I still laugh at the FAU guys that aren't curious about Avatar. Film lovers... bah.
still looks ridiculous and dumb to me.Trying to fit too much stuff, mechs along with dragon-like flying stuff and cat-like folk.I may see it on dvd
Wow, one of the reviews states "the mother of all battles". Will Lord of the Rings be toppled in this category? :oEngrish_MajorI saw the trailer....didn't see anything in that to topple LOTR....
I just don't see the appeal in the film aside from it being a technological marvel. I'll see it when it comes on DVD.mo0ksiI don't see it either. And then, too, I don't find critics to be the best opinion.....
I see it as being a visual treat with a bland story, but it will get good reviews because people are wowed by the visuals. I'll see it sometime, but I'm certainly not expecting anything on the level of Star Wars or LOTR.
We'll see I guess.
Well, whoever said it was the next Star Wars or LOTR... I really wish they wouldn't have done that.. because both Star Wars and LOTR are extremly over rated film productions. Sure, they were good, but definately not that amazing as most people think they are.
Avatar will be a great film. Fun to watch.. with a great story about how human nature really is.. unfortunately it'll be spoiled by the fairy tale ending all hollywood movies have.
I'll be seeing this, I've wanted to for a while. It's up to 91% now on Rotten Tomatoes. Some reviews said, the trailers don't do it justice, so I'll have to see for myself.
Where are the haters now? I know GS is filled with 'em. Every other site I go to they love Avatar. GS just got owned.ChiddalingIn fairness, the trailer was garbage. Any negative opinions made prior to its release were totally justified.
