I've never seen this show , I mean I've seen some programs related to top gear a couple of times but they were just driving cars and not in a studio like this.A shame as I liked the show the bit this thread provided me,
Anyways regarding the topic I'm brazillian and we do the exact same jokes about the people who live in the north of our country , we call them lazy asses , we stereotype their accent and food , lack of intelligence and ability to form opinion. We don't mean no harm though it's just fun.
well ive seen more than my share of black comedians make fun of white people constantly and it doesn't cause any controversy, but a white person ripping on a black or mexican...thats just racist and intolerant right? get over the whole white guilt discrimination bs,every race seems to make fun of other races in one way or another but only whites get into trouble when they do it, hmm.Idiots.There is not much I can say other than that. Why is the mentality towards mexicans, homosexuals, americans, blacks, asians etc so messed up? Well, it is that way due to people making comments like these on TV and other forms of media. There is a thin line between being funny and completely offensive. How often do you see comedians performing monologues about blacks, mexicans, americans, gays, and asians? It might feel good to laugh at minorities for a while yet people like this probably don't know what it feels like to be oppressed and discriminated upon. For every person that makes comments like this to provoke laughter there are probably thousands living in fear due to humiliation and violent crimes against them. It is sad that these people are getting paid to discriminate others. I really don't know how to feel towards this.

Way to Generalise everyone...
Do you actually know anything about Britain that you didn't see in a Cartoon? Going by your Logic Everyone must eat big Cheesy Tortillas in Mexico.
andalore
Don't get me started on the customs and habits of those horribly damp islands.
Oh and...
cheesy tortilla>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>any British food
That's why there are millions of Mexican restaurants all over the world, yet I have never seen a "British" restaurant outside of Britain.
If these were mexicans talking about americans this way, I wouldn't care. Why is stuff like this a big deal?

Because if a white person says something like that it automatically becomes racist :(
Who cares? they make fun of everything. They've made fun of Australia and i still love the show. Christ people are sensitive, get over it.
Firstly, Mexicans aren't a race; they are citizens of a nation, similar to Americans. We Americans are made fun of often enough on the show, but that doesn't bother me, nor does it dissuade me from watching the show. Secondly, is there anything Top Gear doesn't make fun of?
In summation, I think the O.P. suffers from a persecution complex. :(
When Jeremy Clarkson interviewed Eric Bana once, he said that Australia and England are the last two countries in the world that can make fun of each other and not become all upset and indignant about it.Who cares? they make fun of everything. It's just tasteless humor. Some of us find it quite funny. He is not promoting violence against Mexicans, just making fun of the sterio type. I don't see a problem with that. If you can't laugh, you are too easily offended.
This is Jeremy Clarkson we're talking about. He always says stuff like that to push people's buttons--to get a rise out of people. He's never malicious, it's always to get a reaction from others. You can't take what he says seriously. That's just the way he is: very opinionated, but I can bet that he probably doesn't really believe what he said.
as a collector of fine, antique ponchos I am highly offended by those comments, specifically the one about "a blanket with a hole in it".
I will be writing a letter to Top Gear expressing my disgust at the anti-poncho agenda, and will be contacting my lawyer.
seriously, though, that was pretty excessive. A quick smartass comment about laziness or quality of work or whatever would have been fine, but to rag on the country of Mexico for minutes on end is pretty serious racism imo.

The point is to go and touch the wound.
By the way OP, how do you feel by the fact that 95% of the people here dismiss your idea that this was offensive? I hate political correctness
I hate insecure easily offended people. I love to offend them
Oh they broke the rule where you can only make jokes about people with white skin, cause if you make jokes about people with darker skin then its racist. If they had done this about the Irish or germans no one would care at all.. so seriously calm down.

The comment that was made about "waking up Mexican" is pretty far out there. I mean, that's a pretty foul thing to say about any nationality. Every person should feel proud about his or her nationality.
Personally, I'd rather wake up Mexican than British any day.
[QUOTE="pspdseagle"]They picked wrong stereotypes...lazy & bad food? Sorry that is unheard of...hyrueprince11
Bad food was pretty stupid (specially coming from english people) however the lazy part is true, even mexicans make fun of it
Just because you say someone else makes bad food does not mean you think you make good food.I believe comedians should be able to make such jokes without being called racist. They are there to make jokes, not be PC.
I'm sure I'm not the only mexican here, but I'll give my two cents anyway. First off, they're just stereotypes, we're all used to those, right? However, there's this little trend in my country were we hate being noticed as mexicans, we avoid it, mostly, but when stuff like this happens, boy, do some of use get all proud and start waving the national flag.
So yeah, don't mind it all, that's us trying to feel good about ourselves, like we have something to defend, you know? We haven't been in many wars so we don't have that Nationalistic feeling pretty much every other country has, it can't be helped I guess.
However there's this little thing:
I don't think people realize how offensive the "just imagine waking up and remembering you're mexican" phrase is, if they didn't say that, I would be the first one to say people are overreacting
hyrueprince11
I do think this is going a bit overboard, but nevertheless, I understand it's comedy, etc. etc.
I'm sorry, that was great! I can't wait until they show that on TV here.
People who get offended by that stuff need to really lighten up. People need to be able to laugh at themselves and not cry foul at things like this. I don't understand how people think these sorts of things are discrimination. I'm a Christian, conservative, Australian, and I laugh at jokes about Christians, conservatives, and Australians. Toughen up and lighten up.
Well, usually the British have a peculiar sense of humor that is often misunderstood as offensive, but in this case, some of the things that were said are plainly offensive, and I should expect that those British hosts are not planning to visit México anytime soon.
EDIT: Did I just hear some British people making fun of Mexican cuisine? OMG, I did! No way! The British are the last people on this planet who should criticize any culture's food. British cooking is the worst cooking in Europe. Any cuisine that relies on as much boiled meat as the British cuisine does cannot be a good thing.
Seroiusly...
Mexican food>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>British food
dkrustyklown
Actually mexican food is crap, it's cook it at home easy stuff and I always leave a Mexican restaurant feeling unfulfilled. British food can go pretty deep, it's not all boiled there is a lot about bringing the most flavor out of meat, perhaps even more so then the French who just like it raw and bloody.
I thought that Top Gear were being a little too much on the Mexican especially on the (imagine waking up and remembering your Mexican) that's pretty bad, that's like saying how the race is inferier I wouldn't of gone there myself. A bit of take the mik humor is good but that just went a bit too far they going to see repercussions on that.
P.S Mexican food still sucks but I guess Americans love it because it's random bosh with sause thrown on top made to resemble your lower intestines.
Sticks and stones, and thank you, not only was that funny, but I didn't know a new season had started!
If they think thats offensive we should ship them out Frankie Boyle or Jimmy Carr, they would probably cause some sort of social meltdown in America and end up in prison by the end of the week.
Have you ever seen Chris Rock's stand-up!? a good percentage of that is racist as hell, yet nobody is getting upset about that, why?! because IT'S FUNNY. I'm a white british man and i have no problem laughing at myself and my race, why should it be any different for others?!Idiots. There is not much I can say other than that. OMG lol They so got caught :P That's actually really funny. Oh i am from the UK mind so i dunno maybe it washes with me. British Food is really good the misconception everyone has about it is due to the French who largely hate us and Spam Snails at people. jwsoul
totally agree with you French Food is way overrated out of all countries in Europe that i have visited id say Italy had the best Food .

there a young Country they haven't developed the ability to laugh at themselves yet give it another few centuries and they will realise that taking yourself so seriously is just pointless how ever i do think that kind of strength of character can only be acquired after the Culture in question has faced truly hard times on more than just a few occasions and if the culture does come out of the other side you just might find it has learned to take itself less seriously .
