Yeah, I realize. I just wanted to take advantage of an oppurtunity to make an epic "it just... is..." post :PI really think people would keep argueing metalcore is real metal, because, to some degree, they probably want to be different and say they listen to "metal", instead of rap or whatever.
as for the discussion, there are so many genres of metal I still haven't jumped into. Just a lot of the vocals are major turn offs for me. I think the majority of metal growls suck. This would be a great oppurtunity for some people to list some bands for me :P
Preferably vocals similar to Scar Symmetry( in terms of growls, singing or a combo of both)

Yeah, I see what you mean. It's as though people who are just barely getting into metal for the first time and are using metalcore as a gateway want to feel as though they can say that they're a part of the experience. I will credit that to metalcore, since it seems as though a lot of people who are getting into metal these days started out with that. As for me, well, I was pretty much raised on regular metal thanks to my brother being 6 years older than me and being the only person I had to look up to.
But it's kind of funny to think about what you said when you look at the attitude of the typical "brootal kid" that tends to lean more towards that sort of style. It's especially funnier when you look at the page for the "brootal kid" in yourscenesucks.com (I'm sure you remember seeing that).
And as for getting into metal without growling, there's a good deal of stuff to get into. But the thing about growling is that it's more of an acquired taste, and it can take awhile to get into. I'll admit, I really didn't get into growling in metal until middle school. Once you do get into though, it'll really help to open up a lot of sub-genres to look in to. I'd make some suggestions for metal without growling vocals, but I don't have access to my library since my usual computer isn't working. Though if you really want, I could try and name some stuff off the top of my head, but I'd need to know what you already listen to first.
Like I said, Shadows Fall( pre Threads), Scar Symmetry and Pantera are what i mostly listen to, nowYeah, I see what you mean. yourscenesucks.com was definately written by a metalhead, i can say that much :P
Lamb of God kicks some major ass but they're not the best metal band ever. I'm gonna have to go with Opeth on this one....DiabeticDood

Well, let's see what kind of bands I can recommend.
I'm not sure if you've heard of Kamelot, but they're pretty well known band when it comes to power/prog/symphonic metal. If you're into that kind of stuff, you should definitely give it a try. They don't use growling at all, and the vocals are pretty good. Instrumentally, I'd say they're a superb band, so it's worth a try even if you aren't really into that kind of metal.
Another band that makes good use of progressive and experimental techniques would be Agalloch. The way that they use their vocals is a mix of black metal vocals and soft vocals, and it sounds kind of ridiculous on paper, but in actual practice, they manage to pull it off quite well. Instrumentally, they're not necessarily intricate and complex, but they're still pretty innovative for what it's worth, so I'd just as easily recommend them along with Kamelot, again, if you're into that kind of stuff.
If you want to go into something that's much heavier and grittier than the other two bands I mentioned, give Nevermore a try. They're pre-dominantly a progressive metal band, but they have some heavy infulences on thrash and death metal when it comes to instrumental work, and the vocals sound like operatic vocals mixed with heavy and black metal vocals. They're also pretty well known in the metal world, though I don't really know of whether or not you've heard of them. But either way, if you haven't checked them out, you should also give them a try.
Anyway, that's just some stuff from off the top of my head. If you do some more searching, you'll find plenty to get into.

The lead singer of Kamelot is very good. I don't even listen to them and I think he's a great singer.
Kids only like metalcore because its unpopular. They want to seem like some sort of unique hardcore individual who doesn't accept the mainstream crap, but instead they just listen to **** bands with little talent with instruments and even worse vocals.
For example, I asked a 16 year old, what he thought of Metallica and he said 'They're s.h.i.t'.
I asked him what bands he likes then and he replies Slipknot, Korn, A7X..' It's crazy.
BUT to be honest. I don't give a crap what music people like, As long as your enjoy it, go on pretending it sounds good. Just don't complain to me when your tired of Metalcore, and I'm still listening to Kill'Em All, Rust In Peace, Ride the Lightning, Peace Sells, Reign in Blood, Cowboys From Hell, Master of Puppets, A Vulgar Display of Power ...And Justice For All

No, because you can't say Metallica sucks. They've had a huge impact on metal in general and they just... they clearly don't suck.
I mean I guess you can have that opinion... They're not my favorite band but I mean you at least have to respect what they've done y'know?

You know what else I hate? When people say Metallica sucks and then say that X band is better even though they haven't even made a quarter of the impact Metallica has and haven't done **** in their career.

True that. I can say that yeah Metallica is overrated these days and I admit that. They have been pretty out of form, but the fact that you got all these new kids just getting into Metal who will listen to one well known song, usually Master of Puppets or Enter Sandman, and complain that it is too long or that it isnt metal. Like, seriously, what is peoples issues with song length nowadays. I know not everyone can listen to a song that goes for over 20 minutes, I accept that, but for only 8 minutes? Its not that long. And also they cant appreciate earlier bands and the impact they had, they just say that their old and crap. Some people need to pull their head out of their arses.
Oh and I'm guessing we have ended the discussion about metalcore. It just exists then. Excellent.
It's weird. It's seems everyone at my school like Metallica and don't seem to have a problem with song length. Now the Middle School, now that's a different story. Some kids there (the gangsta) think you're emo if you listen to Metallica :?Juggernaut140Yeah thats pretty much how it runs at my school. Basically everyone who listens to some kind of metal has only be into it for like, 3 or 4 years, basically the time the whole emo thing came about, and then you got me who has been listen to it for 9 going on 10 years now, and of course they just group me with the rest of them even though I dont even look the part.
Oh and as for song length, me and a couple of friends are the only people we know who can actually listen to songs longer than 6 minutes. I tried getting some friends of mine into Opeth (these people know all these bands I and barely anyone had heard of, but they didnt know Opeth :?) and they basically said "yeah its okay but its too long."

Why would anyone care about song length? It's just ridiculous.

People are just getting used to short, 3 minute bursts of music. They dont want to take the time to appreciate the actual music and thought put into it. They just want 2 or 3 catchy riffs, some kind of decent vocals with good lyrics and thats it. Theres basically no love for the bass anymore which saddens me as a bassist. Its a sad state of affairs but the core metal society who still appreciate the music and the such keep it alive.

I really don't get how people can say that a song is "too long" to enojy. If it's a good song, and it keeps you entertained from start to finish, then there shouldn't be a problem with it. But I guess it's because people are starting to get shorter and shorter attention spans when it comes to music these days.

The only time I have problems with song lengths are in songs which becomes too repetitive.I'd probably go with Opeth ;)wapahalaI saw Opeth live along with Dream theater, 3 and BTBAM. Opeth was the worst out of all the bands...Their vocals are awful.
