The 90s had alot of musical movements, grunge was taking off, brit pop was continueing to be awesome as usual, gangsta rap was becoming more popular, indie rock was becoming bigger, Shoegazer, which was more of a 80s thing but it still counts, was big still, Progressive metal and Progressive music in general had some incredible albums in the 90s since it was becoming more popular again. I think Ska was getting bigger in the 90s too, but I could be wrong about that. I'm sure I have missed some. I think my favorite though were Britpop and the return of progessive rock and progressive metal.

Boy bands, I wouldn't say they were the BEST musical movements, but they were sure noticeable. Nsync, Backstreet Boys, 98 Degrees and all those other bands. I think they sort of influenced the pop music of today, sort of.

I love shoegazer, but grunge was more noticeable in the USA. At least grunge helped to kill the 80s hair bands.

^Journey is from the 80's yo. ;)

On topic: the emergence of house music, and the progression of techno from 'strings' to Plastikman.

I guess it depends. It's really a hard-to-define genre. Do you consider Sonic Youth to be no-wave?

Sonic Youth's first album or two were pretty no wavey, but after that, no way.

No Wave was early 80s mostly.

Mr. Bungle were a member of the sweet alternative chapter. Some would put them in the avant-garde genre but they weren't entirely avant-garde. Still, I agree that they were awwesome, as were many odd groups to come out in the 90's.

I guess if you smash the Cure together with Slowdive, and take away all of their prozac, that's Jeniferever. (yes, they're that sad!) Check out the album Choose A Bright Morning. They also have a new 10' EP out now that is even better, but pretty limited.

It is a form of alternative music made most famous in the 80's by european groups. It's best elements are dreamy guitar riffs, a lot of effects pedals, lyrics involving relationships and depression and vocals you can't really understand the lyrics too. Chck out My Bloody Valentine, Cocteau Twins and Starflyer 59 for great examples of Shoegaze.
