They don't normally. They have their orders, and they accept them. That's how it works. Why can't you trust the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Secretary of Defense on this?

Lab392

Does it effect them in any way, shape, or form?

I don't think men serving alongside women has been a rampant, horrific problem.

Men don't stay in the same barracks as women.

Okay, You have fun with that then.

so you would rather shower with someone, not knowing their sexuality or pretending they are straight, that is better?

Just to answer the shower question.....it's not a big deal. Only time you shower en masse would be basic. But if you are bothered get up earlier.

I did, in fact, have a room mate that was gay while I was in the army. No problems whatsoever and I didn't adjust my habits because of it.

first of all, gays hurt people? Second of all, that's like saying if you don't know someone is a murderer, he or she can't kill you...

If you have a problem with homosexuality, wouldn't you rather someone is honest/open, then you can respect each other's views, and fight on a battlefield together.

You misunderstand again: I was asking you if every soldier in the military is homophobic or not. And it is in place so that homosexual soldiers are not discharged for something as petulant as their sexuality being uncovered.super_mario_128
i think he meant they should have a say simply because it affects them....not that the outcome would be different. At least that was my take on his comment....

That was what I was saying. Thank You.

Why did they not have a say in it? Do soldiers not have the option to vote while abroad or was this not up to public debate? Just curious.

I don't think men serving alongside women has been a rampant, horrific problem.

Men don't stay in the same barracks as women.

Not on base in America. In Iraq and Afghanistan, their living areas are much, much closer.

Nobody wants their lives and their country in the hands of a bunch of nancy's though. I didnt see problem with the law

If you do a bit of research into ancient greece you'll see that amongst Spartan soldiers, homosexuality was promoted as a way of forming stronger bonds. And history says the Spartans were some of the finest soldiers ever seen. I'd rather see my country in the hands of a "nancy" than a bigoted fool.

That's not a good example since the younger soldier had no say in the matter. Many of the older soldiers had families so I wouldn't equate it to a gay relationship in any way....

They can't vote on this, only their superiors can as far as I know. The ones not on the battlefield.

They aren't living or showering with each other though.

Fun fact that you don't seem to understand: There are gay people in the army, right now, taking showers with a bunch of dudes, right now, sleeping in tents next to a bunch of dudes, right now, and nothing is happening.

Another fun fact: I can take a shower with a bunch of guys without raping them.

Living and showering with gays simply has no bearing on the fact that gays aren't do anything to anybody. It simply does not matter.

Who said anything about Rape? :? Earlier in this thread I noted that their were already Gays in the military, I also posted why this law was put into place. We'll just have to see what happens.

I don't think America is ready for this, I could be wrong of course. There is still alot of discrimination in the military, I wonder if this will add to it or if the mentality of people these days has changed enough that nothing will come about due to this.

Espada12
most ppl are never ready for change. it gets thrust upon them but we adapt quickly. most weren't for desegregation and other civil rights either.

Are the soldiers aware of this before they are shipped off? I mean, if they are then they have no reason to complain. They join the military voluntarily with the knowledge that they can not vote for themselves, as this is a priviledge only for their superiors, and then complain about changes with which they are not happy. Sounds to me like they should get over it. :/

dude, it's not like he's going to be washing your back. if you go to the gym it's not unlikely that you already showered in the same area at the same time as a gay person.

it used to be that if they happened to even find in your postcards that you were gay they could boot you. if the bill passes they don't have to worry if someone sees that they are gay on their facebook, etc. I think opponents also think this means they will start acting all flamboyant all of a sudden. please, these are ppl that want to be in the military and thus have discipline.

Not commenting on this particular argument but unfortunately not everyone in the military has discipline.....and note I'm not talking about any one group but in general. Not everyone that joins should be in.

The military design is very homosexual in nature to begin with.. Though its nothing physical, boot camp is meant to break down in individuality and work as a unit.. To the point the man or woman next to you, you would take a bullet for.. The SPartans did it to the extreme but in the end its still the same strategy.

Actually the military strategy is not sexual. In fact, sexuality would tend to create problems. Rather they want all soldiers to work as a team without distraction.

Now it is that way I am talking about the premise is a very deep emotional one.. THe military trianing pretty much has its roots from ancient socieyt like Sparta.. And no it wouldn't, the Spartans proved that.. They just took it to the extreme where peopel had a physical relationship to the point that they would die to save the man next to them. But in the end outside of the same physical relationships, the training and the training into small groups is no different.

You're not taught to think of other soldiers as individuals....but as a team. So that does not coincide with what you're saying.....

this is gonna be a tough adjustment for a few months and a lot of naysayers will be going "I told you so" but overall it will be for the best; the more people that can feel at home in the military, and comfortable in it, the better.

and frankly, if there are any homophobes serving i nthe military (I am sure there are), I dont want them in it...I dont want such unamerican people representing my country

Anti-Americans are people who dislike the country and the government (in a radical way, not just not liking the direction of the country.) UnAmerican is being against the values of the country. (Liberty and equal justice under the laws)

Well since the law has not been something the majority feel strongly enough about to push for change...I think we can say Unamerican does not apply here. Not until a majority feel that way......

A majority of Americans want repeal of DADT. 70%. http://www.gallup.com/poll/127904/Broad-Steady-Support-Openly-Gay-Service-Members.aspx
